Is The Summer I Turned Pretty out yet?

If like us, your guilty pleasure revolves around rom-coms—cheesy, classic or contemporary, we're not picky, we'll take them all—then you're in for a treat because your next obsession has been found: The Summer I Turned Pretty.

The series is based on the novel by the same name, by YA romance royalty, Jenny Han, the very author who gifted us the To All The Boys I've Loved Before trilogy.

Like many of our favourite films and shows in the genre, the story hinges on a summer love triangle at the centre of which are three teens—Isabel aka Belly, played by Lola Tung, Conrad, played by Christopher Briney and Jeremiah, played by Gavin Casalegno.

What Is The Plot Of ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’?

Per the series synopsis, "The Summer I Turned Pretty is a multigenerational drama that hinges on a love triangle between one girl and two brothers, the ever-evolving relationship between mothers and their children, and the enduring power of strong female friendship. It is a coming-of-age story about first love, first heartbreak, and the magic of that one perfect summer."

Author Jenny Han worked as a showrunner on the television adaption and assured loyal fans of the book they wouldn't be disappointed.

"For the longtime book fans, I think it will have been worth the wait. For those newly discovering the Summer series, I hope you fall in love with these characters and this place that is so dear to my heart," Han told Deadline last year following the show's announcement.

If you'd love to read the book before watching the series, you can pick up a copy or the whole trilogy, here.

Maddison Hockey is the Shopping Editor (digital) at marie claire and ELLE. When she’s not online shopping, she’s furiously binge-watching the latest watercooler show, but more often than not, she’s doing both simultaneously.

If you were hoping to catch The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2 before 2022 came to an end, there’s some disappointing news. It’s not coming to Prime Video yet.

With the way things ended in The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 1, we need to know what’s to come next. Sure, we could read the second book, but it does look like some storylines are being changed for the second season.

There is some bad news. We’re not going to get to watch The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2 in 2022 at all. It is not on the list of December releases, not that we thought it would be. This doesn’t sound like a Christmas series, does it?

When will The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2 come to Prime Video?

While Amazon has released premiere dates for a couple of shows, that’s not the case for The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2. However, we are expecting to see it at some point in 2023.

It took about a year from the announcement to the release of the first season. With the renewal coming in ahead of the release of that first season, we could see Season 2 arrive in June 2023. If not, then we’re still looking at July or August, sometime in the summer. It does make sense to release this series in the summer considering the title and the setting.

The second season is set to follow the second book, but we do spot a few changes. It looked like Susannah agreed to give the trial a chance at the end of the first season, which she didn’t do in the book. In fact, everyone is dealing with grief in the second book.

We can't wait to pack our bathing suits and head back to the picturesque East Coast town of Cousins Beach for Season 2 of The Summer I Turned Pretty. Prime Video's young adult romance series is based on the books of the same name by Jenny Han. Han also wrote the source novels for our favorite Netflix movie trilogy, To All the Boys I've Loved Before, so it's no wonder the Amazon show stole our hearts last summer. (Han also created the series.) While the cast is definitely Gen Z, viewers of all ages are hooked thanks to the pretty coastal setting, the quality soundtrack (hello T-Swift), and the excitement of first love.

Warning: This article contains spoilers about The Summer I Turned Pretty Seasons 1 and 2.

"They've always seen me as a little kid, but this summer it's different." Season 1 followed the first book in the coming-of-age trilogy, documenting 16-year-old Belly Conklin's (Lola Tung) summer vacation and her love triangle with brothers and walking Abercrombie and Fitch models Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno). Meanwhile, the boys' mother Susannah (Rachel Blanchard) revealed she has breast cancer and agreed to participate in a cancer trial to hopefully find a cure — a deviation from the book's storyline. While the series uses the first book as inspiration, Amazon Studios did take some other liberties, including adding Jeremiah's bisexuality and having Belly participate in the debutante ball. We can assume Season 2 will follow the gist of the second book in the series, It's Not Summer Without You, and hope that Amazon will pick up The Summer I Turned Pretty for a third season to round out the trilogy with We'll Always Have Summer. The Belly+Conrad+Jeremiah love triangle is possibly the greatest budding romance story of our time (well, at least of summer 2022), and it deserves to be followed through, regardless of whether you're Team Conrad or Team Jeremiah (or even Team Cam).

So if you're here for teenage love triangles, coastal grandma aesthetics, and books-turned-TV-series, keep reading for everything we know about the Season 2 of TSITP.

    Latest news

MAJOR possible spoiler alert for Season 2: In the novels, Susannah dies between Book 1 and 2, but, Han's TikToks have shown Rachel Blanchard hanging out during Season 2 filming, indicating we'll most likely see her character in the next installment. After all, at the end of Season 1, Susannah agreed to start clinical trials for her cancer treatment, so this could be one of those deviations from the book that Han has hinted at for Season 2. "There's always gonna be changes here and there, so I guess you'll just have to wait and see," Han told E! News at the 20th Annual Asian American Awards on Dec. 17. "I'm the one doing the changes, so I guess get mad at me, because I'm the one who's changing it!" Time will only tell what other changes to the storyline are in store for Season 2.

Filming on Season 2 officially wrapped on Nov. 8, so we'll be back at the summer house in no time! The show's official Twitter account shared this adorable pic of some of the cast to prove it. What we'd like to know is: Where can we get our hands on one of those jackets?

The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2 release date

Prime Video has yet to announce a release date for Season 2. Production on Season 2 has wrapped, so we're hoping that means a 2023 release (possibly in June like Season 1?). The first season had seven episodes, so Season 2 will likely follow that pattern.

The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2 plot

MAJOR possible spoiler alert for Season 2: In the second book of Jenny Han's trilogy, Susannah dies from breast cancer, which naturally has a deep effect on her sons. Amid the grief, Conrad runs away from home and Belly and Jeremiah head out on a road trip to find him. Through it all, Belly and Jeremiah get closer and the love triangle deepens. We don't know how closely the TV adaptation will follow that storyline. We'll have to wait and see in Season 2.

The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2 cast

Most of the summer vacation house crew will be returning in Season 2, including the Conklins — Belly (Tung), her mother Laurel (Jackie Chung), and brother Steven (Sean Kaufman) — as well as Conrad (Briney) and Jeremiah (Casalegno). Belly's friends Taylor (Rain Spencer) and Cam (David Iacono) are also set to return.

On Aug. 31, Amazon announced two new cast members: Kyra Sedgwick and Elsie Fisher will be joining Season 2 in recurring roles.

The Summer I Turned Pretty Cast Members

    • Lola Tung as Belly Conklin
    • Christopher Briney as Conrad
    • Gavin Casalegno as Jeremiah
    • Jackie Chung as Laurel

Will there be season 2 of The Summer I Turned Pretty?

Yes! Not only is The Summer I Turned Pretty getting another season, but it already wrapped up production, so there is much to celebrate. The original books are a three-part trilogy, so fingers crossed for a season 3 of the Cousins Beach crew right behind this one.
