The Velvet Underground created a new sound that changed the world of music, cementing its place as one of rock’n’ roll’s most revered bands. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Todd Haynes, “The Velvet Underground” shows just how the group became a cultural touchstone representing a range of contradictions: the band is both of their time, yet timeless; literary yet realistic; rooted in high art and street culture.
The film features in-depth interviews with the key players of that time combined with a treasure trove of never-before-seen performances and a rich collection of recordings, Warhol films, and other experimental art that creates an immersive experience into what founding member John Cale describes as the band's creative ethos: “how to be elegant and how to be brutal.”

About ‘The Velvet Underground’
The Velvet Underground features interviews, never-before-seen performances, recordings, films, and experimental art. This experience encompasses “how to be elegant and how to be brutal,” which is band member John Cale’s description of The Velvet Underground’s ethos.
The documentary showcases the history of the band, which got its start in New York City in 1964. Its original lineup included singer and guitarist Lou Reed, multi-instrumentalist John Cale, guitarist Sterling Morrison, and drummer Angus MacLise.
“My job as a filmmaker is to try to bring the medium of film, in some context, to open up the visual language of a movie to a band and their music. It’s really about ‘how do you make a feeling of watching the movie something on a par with what they did?’” Haynes told BBC Culture.
