Is there a movie Hatchet by Gary Paulsen

Director Mark Griffiths' A Cry in the Wild is based on Gary Paulsen's award-winning book The Hatchet. And as with many book adaptations, A Cry in the Wild does not fare as well on film as it does on paper.

As the movie begins, teen-ager Brian Robeson (Jared Rushton) is preparing to visit his father (Steven Meadows), who is working on a special project for his employer in the oil fields of Canada. From the opening sequences, we learn that Brian's parents are divorced, and it is obvious that Brian and his mother (played by Pamela Sue Martin) have grown apart.

Before boarding the bush plane that will take him to Canada, Brian is given a hatchet by his mom - "To brave the Canadian wilderness," she jokes. If she only knew . . .

During the flight, the plane's pilot (Ned Beatty) dies of a heart attack, and Brian, the plane's lone passenger, is forced to crash-land in a lake in the middle of nowhere.

Without food, shelter and supplies, Brian must brave the wilderness using only his instincts, his will to survive and, of course, his hatchet.

A Cry in the Wild remains mostly true to the events in The Hatchet, most likely because Paulsen co-wrote the screenplay, but, sadly, when the film does stray from the book's action, the results are pitiful.

For example, the book features little dialogue; the film, on the other hand, features plenty of scenes in which Brian talks to the animals, the plant life and to himself.

As far as acting goes, Rushton delivers a believable performance, and Martin, Meadows and Beatty are all adequate in their respective roles.

A Cry in the Wild is a typical man-vs.-nature story, in which the hero learns to live off the land and begins to appreciate the things he had in civilization. During the film's sappy final scene (depicting Brian's family eating Thanksgiving dinner), I almost expected Brian to stand up and exclaim, "There's no place like home!" As a screen adaptation of The Hatchet, A Cry in the Wild is a shot in the dark.
