Is Umibe no Etranger worth watching?

sort

It was absolutely horrible. Characters are flat and unrealistic. It was trying to tell something more occasionally, like being excluded from group of friends and family but it was treated briefly. The story was meant to be peaceful and heartwarming but because of an unresonable behaviour of characters I couldn't get into it. Nobody acts like that, I couldn't sympathize with them. It has a simmiliar vibe to fanfics from wattpad. Besides that, the story was very rushed, everything happened so quickly, there wasn't time for this relation to grow up properly. I think that was the main reason it turned out so unnatural. I was laughing out loud during watching because of how cringe and ridiculous it was. The animation is good, but it's worthless without the story.

Summarizing:Umibe no Étranger is a cheesy movie without depth. Conflicts are artificial, as well as characters. I think that the plot wasn't a priority there. "Cute" interactions between poor created characters are the main advantage of this movie, but it isn't enough to make it interesting.

So as a queer person its hard to find mlm/wlw animes that arent hypersexualized or fetishy and made for the pleasure of the opposite gender. Let me tell you that was not the case at all here. This anime was adorable dealing with some rough topics such as death, homophobia and illness but for the most part the anime was light hearted and adorable. There was 1 sex scene that I was worried about but it ended up only making the movie better for me. Coming from someone who doesnt like watching explict things, it was adorable. It was intimate and really sweet. Instead of showing a rough and borderline assault sex scene like most mlm/wlw anime does it showed an intimate sweet one with 2 people who love each other and bonus points for constantly asking for consent and it was only about a minute or two long so you can always skip it. Also the animation was beautiful which as an artist myself I always love good animation. The sound track was really pretty and I barely noticed it because of how well it fit with the scenes or maybe I was just too sucked into the the tooth rotting fluff to notice. It was so adorable and so sweet and they both got their happy ending which make me so happy. I cried by the end of the movie because it was so sweet it made my chest hurt and I never cry. It had the same vibe as Doukyuusei but this tops it for me. Its some of the best gay representation I've seen in an anime in a while and its definitly going to be something I rewatch in the future, highly recommend.

review might have slight spoilers , but no major ones :)

i watched this on 9anime.to , but you can find it on youtube aswell . im always looking for more wholesome or just in general good bl & gl . alot of the time theres some weird incest , the storyline is just bad or it fetishes mlm / wlw relationships which isnt something i want to watch . so when i got recommended this i was worried it was going to be like something i listed above , but i was so wrong . im surprised at how not alot of people are talking about this movie

story : the storyline is so good and heartwarming . we see two boys ( shun and mio ) meet and have their feelings grow for one another as each day passes , however mio would have to move for the mainland leaving shun behind . after three years mio comes back because he still has feelings for shun and thats where their relationship starts to grow even more , however they are faced with difficulties as shun isnt exactly ready to commit to their relationship ( and another thing but i wont mention it ) . i loved the problems that the movie showed between their relationship , even if they were just minor ones it just felt so much more realistic compared to some other bl's

animation : ahh dont even get me started , the animation is beautiful ! it was so colourful , everything was vibrant especially the flowers which is one of my favourite things about the movie . it was smooth and clean , thats all there pretty much is to say . they executed it really well

sound : just like the animation , there isnt much to say apart from the fact is was good . the scenes at the beach were my favourite as the sound was so relaxing , it makes you feel as if youre actually there . the small details like hearing the kid running on the sand or the crickets when it turned to night was so cool

characters : i loved the character designs and the detail that was put into them , including their backstrories as both mio and shun have gone through things . one of my favourite scenes was when we saw the flashback of mio and his mother running along the beach towards the end of the movie , it was a short moment but it was sad as you can understand the grief mio has gone through and how he misses his mother ( which is why he told shun to go see his father because he knows what its like to lose a parent )

overall : this movie is definitely worth the watch , its only about 58 minutes long and to me its different from the other bl's ive seen . im definitely going to be buying the manga to see what the movie may of missed out if anything at all . sorry if i missed anything out or wrote something wrong , this is my first review and if youve read it this far thank you :)

This movie is such a soft hug while also handling themes like internalized homophobia. I really like the animation, the backgrounds at times reminded me of Ghibli. The characters were interesting and the relationship had me invested.

My main complaint with it is that it didn't feel like a complete movie. In the last minute I legit checked the time because i was not sure if we were in the middle of the storyline or closer to the end, and when it ended it left me feeling like this was a premise for something else that could have been wonderful if it had only been more developed.

I'M CRYING IT'S SO WELL DONE TToTT

The art style is so gorgeous and the animation is clean. The soundtrack fits the story well too. And, as the manga, the story is amazing and gives a sense of realism. Which leads me to my next point about the movie, in which it sticks really well to the manga; something I really love about it. Of course, minor details here and there are changed, but mot of it really stays true to the manga. I love this Umibe and Harukaze No Etranger so much ^^

Please read the manga as well, as it's equally as magnificent!

Is Umibe no Etranger a good anime?

I had high hopes for Umibe no Étranger ever since I saw that adorable key visual for it. You don't normally see BL anime with male character designs that are cute and round rather than lanky and sharp. I knew nothing about the story, but on a purely aesthetic level, I was attracted to this anime.

Are Mio and Shun the same age?

Fans from the fandom find it weird that Mio and Shuns age gap is a 7 year difference, also because Shun took interest in Mio when he was just in high school and was only 17 years old, while Shun was around the age 24, pre-timeskip.
