Windows 11 offers a range of UI and quality-of-life changes, but Microsoft also claims it's the best Windows OS yet for PC gaming. Part of this is the integration of certain gaming-centric options into the Windows settings. Another is the baked-in Xbox Game Bar. (See our rundown of key new features in Windows 11 for gamers.)

But in these days when the cost of GPUs makes buying one feel like a major life choice, how about the frame rates? What about sheer, raw gaming performance? Does 11, indeed, turn it up to 11?

Just before we posted this article, we tested Windows 11 and 10 on a mainstream Dell laptop to see the differences in performance between everyday productivity apps. To see if there’s any speed advantage (or disadvantage!) in Windows 11 for gaming, we took matters into our own hands once again: We ran the same batch of gaming benchmark tests, in turn, on the same laptop on each operating system, in a best-case scenario to show any differences. The laptop in question here is the Alienware x15, a slim and potent high-end machine. If any consistent variance in performance will arise between the two operating systems, this deluxe laptop will give us enough hardware overhead to make the margins clear.

The Test Laptop and Benchmarks

The Alienware x15 packs up-to-the-moment components: an Intel Core i7-11800H processor, 16GB of memory, and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 GPU. That’s a powerful package for gaming. Perhaps not maximum specs, but definitely toward the upper end for slim laptops.

I’m one of the consumer PC experts at PCMag, with a particular love for PC gaming. I've played games on my computer for as long as I can remember, which eventually (as it does for many) led me to building and upgrading my own desktop. Through my years here, I've tested and reviewed many, many dozens of laptops and desktops, and I am always happy to recommend a PC for your needs and budget.

Roll-out strategy? What roll-out strategy! If you still haven't received the very latest and distinctly beautiful Windows 10 installation notification, not a thing to worry about as we know how you can get it right now!

Download and install Windows 10!

Yes, we told you that Microsoft is not going to send the Windows 10 update to everyone immediately and in fact, the rollout strategy seeds out the updates in multiple waves. However, it seems like you can get the update in the very first wave even if you aren't an Insider. Microsoft had promised that Insiders would be first in line and while we believed in their luck, ours is no worse! If you are wondering how you can taste the tantalizing Windows 10 on the very first day of its launch, here's what to do.

We already shared with you that some users started to spot a new folder in their Windows partition. This folder titled $Windows.~BT is apparently the download folder carrying the installation files. However, this folder too isn't a guarantee of a user being able to actually install Windows 10. To receive your copy of Windows 10 instantly:

  • Go to Command Prompt as an admin
  • Type wuauclt.exe /updatenow

  • Windows 10 should start downloading in a few minutes

You can confirm the latest Windows 10 being downloaded in the Windows Update. You might have to check for updates or restart your PC (going by the comments in the original Reddit thread) but it worked for us without doing anything but typing the string in the Command Prompt. Let us know if this works for you; some users have managed to download and install Windows 10 using this process while others are reporting having trouble as they don't seem to be allowed to install the update after the download finishes.

Don't forget that this will only work if you have already reserved a copy of Windows 10. Once the download is complete, you'll be notified for installation. You can decide to schedule at some other time or install it right away. Considering the heavy load on Content Delivery Networks (CDNs), expect super slow speed of downloads and be patient as there's nothing wrong with your computer or anything else. Analysts had already reported that we should expect to see some performance issues with the internet as Microsoft reserves some 40 Tbps for rolling out its Windows 10 to consumers.

When you decide to install Windows 10 on your computer (regardless of receiving the notification from Microsoft or doing it manually through the aforementioned string), simply go to Windows Update and follow through the steps. It's nothing but clicking to agree with the legal stuff, clicking Next on the Your upgrade is ready to install popup and the next few screens afterwards. Once done, click on Start the upgrade now and let your computer take care of itself. This is a good time to get yourself some coffee as the installation process will take from 20 minutes to around an hour and a lot of battery. Patience is the key, my friends.

Important to check before you install Windows 10

  • Don't forget to check the minimum System Requirements to make sure your computer can handle Windows 10.
  • Backup is the key! Remember, you won't lose your programs or apps but it's always recommended to keep a backup when you are going with a system update.

We hope you have successfully managed to download Windows 10; installation is super easy.

[Update]: Download Windows 10 ISO image and install the new Windows

  2. Launch it.
  3. On the Setup screen, click on "Create installation media for another PC" > Next.
  4. Select options on the next screen, including your Language, Edition and Architecture (depending on the ISO you want to download).
  5. Click on Next to proceed.
  6. Now, select the ISO file option and choose the place where you want to save it.
  7. Click on Save to confirm and start downloading.

The process may take up to a few hours, so be patient. Let us know if you like the new look of the operating system. Wait, don't forget to tell us if you have fallen for Cortana already.

Is Windows 10 good enough for gaming?

The short answer to this is pretty simple: yes! Windows 10, at this point, is certainly good for gaming and has earned the right to be the first choice of gamers when it comes to selecting an Operating System for their computers.

Is Windows 10 or 11 better for gaming?

Microsoft has made it clear that gaming is a big focus for Windows 11, so it's the better platform for gamers now, especially with some of the performance bugs worked out. PC gamers are updating to Windows 11 in droves, so that's a good sign.

Is Windows 11 still worse for gaming?

For some reason, Windows 11 can trigger additional software processes while gaming, which can drag down performance. “Affected games and apps are inadvertently enabling GPU performance debugging features not meant to be used by consumers,” Microsoft says.

Is Windows 10 or 7 better for gaming?

Windows 7 is enough for gaming, especially if you prefer to play older games. Many old games experience compatibility issues on Windows 10. However, some newer games won't run on Windows 7, and DirectX 12 support is limited. There are several reasons why people prefer using Windows 7 over Windows 10.
