He says, “Both. Anyone can have children. Anyone can get married. But not everyone can be a neurosurgeon. I get a lot of pride out of that. And I don’t just want to be a great neurosurgeon. I want to be the best in my field.” “You’re right. It does make you sound arrogant.” He smiles. “My mother fears I’m wasting my life away because all I do is work.” “You’re a neurosurgeon and your mother is disappointed in you?” I laugh. “Good lord, that’s insane. Are parents ever really happy with their children? Will they ever be good enough?” He shakes his head. “My children wouldn’t be. Not many people have the drive I do, so I’d only be setting them up for failure. That’s why I’ll never have any.” “I actually think that’s respectable, Ryle. A lot of people refuse to admit they might be too selfish to have children.” He shakes his head. “Oh, I’m way too selfish to have children. And I’m definitely way too selfish to be in a relationship.” “So how do you avoid it? You just don’t date?” He cuts his eyes to me, and there’s a slight grin affixed to his face. “When I have time, there are girls who satisfy those needs. I don’t lack for anything in that department, if that’s what you’re asking. But love has never appealed to me. It’s always been more of a burden than anything.” I wish I looked at love like that. It would remember he’s a chef. A good one. And he’s cooking me breakfast. He glances up at me as I make my way into the kitchen. “Morning,” he says, careful to say it without too much inflection. “I hope you’re hungry.” He slides a glass and a container of orange juice across the counter toward me, then he turns and faces the stove again. “I am.” He glances back over his shoulder and gives me a ghost of a smile. I pour myself a glass of orange juice and then walk to the other side of the kitchen where there’s a breakfast nook. There’s a newspaper on the table and I begin to pick it up. When I see the article about the best businesses in Boston printed across the page, my hands immediately begin to shake and I drop the paper back on the table. I close my eyes and take a slow sip of the orange juice. A few minutes later, Atlas sets a plate down in front of me, then claims the seat across from me at the table. He pulls his own plate of food in front of him and cuts into a crepe with his fork. I look down at my plate. Three crepes, drizzled in syrup and garnished with a dab of whipped cream. Orange and strawberry slices line the right side of the plate. It’s almost too pretty to eat, but I’m too hungry to care. I take a bite and close my eyes

Publisher Description

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of It Starts with Us and All Your Perfects, a “brave and heartbreaking novel that digs its claws into you and doesn’t let go, long after you’ve finished it” (Anna Todd, New York Times bestselling author) about a workaholic with a too-good-to-be-true romance can’t stop thinking about her first love.

Lily hasn’t always had it easy, but that’s never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She’s come a long way from the small town where she grew up—she graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. And when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, everything in Lily’s life seems too good to be true.

Ryle is assertive, stubborn, maybe even a little arrogant. He’s also sensitive, brilliant, and has a total soft spot for Lily. And the way he looks in scrubs certainly doesn’t hurt. Lily can’t get him out of her head. But Ryle’s complete aversion to relationships is disturbing. Even as Lily finds herself becoming the exception to his “no dating” rule, she can’t help but wonder what made him that way in the first place.

As questions about her new relationship overwhelm her, so do thoughts of Atlas Corrigan—her first love and a link to the past she left behind. He was her kindred spirit, her protector. When Atlas suddenly reappears, everything Lily has built with Ryle is threatened.

An honest, evocative, and tender novel, It Ends with Us is “a glorious and touching read, a forever keeper. The kind of book that gets handed down” (USA TODAY).

APPLE BOOKS REVIEW

New Adult pioneer Colleen Hoover's latest novel is a courageous and autobiographical look at the cycle of domestic abuse. Lily Bloom is still making peace with the death of her violent father when she meets Ryle Kincaid, a charismatic neurosurgeon. Lily finds herself falling for Ryle, but then a lover from her past re-enters her life and forces her to question her choices. We were moved by this nontraditional romance, which dares to explore how childhood trauma impacts our adult relationships.

I couldn’t put it down, I couldn’t go to bed. I had to know every word to their story, as fast as I could learn it.
This is one of the best books I’ve read in this lifetime.
Everyone with a brain needs to read this book, not just women, not just sad humans but everyyyyyone. It’s worth every penny, I feel like I could have paid double and still feel like the value of these words outweighs the cost of this book.

It brings to the surface the deeply complex nature of abuse between intimate partners. I have to applaud Hoover for writing what was obviously a very personal story, and for choosing to end it in the way that she did. Suitable for readers 17 and up. Trigger warnings for violence & attempted rape.
