Shark Week is Discovery Channel's annual celebration of one of the aquatic world's most misunderstood apex predators, and has always had a mission statement to not only educate the public about how dangerous these animals can be (as this special demonstrates near the end), but also to bring awareness to a lot of the misconceptions about these creatures. Jackass, on the other hand, became an overnight sensation because a bunch of grown men wanted to film themselves getting hit in the balls. Jackass and Shark Week are two pop culture phenomena that I don't believe anybody ever expected to cross paths; and yet, now that they have, it seems as obvious as peanut butter and chocolate.

The special sees Jackass members Steve-O and Chris Pontius (also known from MTVs WildBoyz, a Jackass-inspired take on Discovery Channel documentaries just like this; my, how we have come full circle on that one) joined by their co-stars from the upcoming film Jackass Forever, Sean "Poopies" McInerney and Jasper Dolphin, as they interact with the sharks in ways that only the Jackass crew could pull off: by performing stupid stunts around them. These bits are a wonderful blend of scary, funny, and educational; one stunt towards the end meant to imitate an infamous episode of the sitcom Happy Days actually does go wrong and sees the performer seriously injured (though he has thankfully made a full recovery), underlining exactly how important it is to respect these animals.

Even though it lacks the substance of other Discovery Channel specials about sharks, the Jackass Shark Week special more than makes up for it with a healthy dose of that gung-ho attitude that has landed ringleader Johnny Knoxville (who sits behind a computer screen for most of this episode) and company so many injuries in the past. Really, though: I don't think us Jackass fans would ever have it any other way.
