Explanation: Which type of lane marking indicates that using the opposite lane of traffic to pass is allowed?

In order to pass your DMV exams and to become a safe driver, it’s important to know the reason why a particular answer on the written test is correct.

Different colors and configurations of lane markings communicate which types of moves are allowed from the lane you are traveling in.

For the purposes of passing, you’ll need to look at both the color and the style of line.

You may only enter into the opposite lane of traffic to pass vehicles moving in the same direction as you when there is a broken yellow line on your side of the road.

If the broken yellow line is on your side, you are allowed to enter into the opposite lane to make a pass as long as there are no oncoming vehicles.

Additionally, you’ll need to make sure:

  • You can see clearing in the opposite direction for oncoming traffic.
  • You have enough time and space to complete the pass safely.
  • There is enough room in front of the vehicle you are passing to allow you to return to your lane.

You should only use the opposite lane to pass when it is both legally allowed and safe to do so.

You can find more information about this topic in the section about lane markings, changing lanes, and passing in your driver’s handbook.

What lines indicate passing is allowed in there are no oncoming cars?

Broken yellow center line means passing is permitted in either direction. Passing should only be done when the way ahead is clear, sightlines are not obstructed and the law allows. Broken yellow lines alongside a solid yellow line means passing is permitted on the side with the broken line.

What line indicates passing is allowed?

A dashed yellow line indicates that passing is allowed. White lines separate lanes for which travel is in the same direction. A double white line indicates that lane changes are prohibited.
