Well I'm working on building large compass rose where my server spawn is however I have not been able to get a definitive answer as to which way north is.

I have looked around on the internet and on youtube but I'm finding conflicting answers.

Some say that the sun and moon rise in the East and set in the West and that the clouds all move west
and others say that if you look at the "L" shape on both netherrack and cobblestone you are facing north

but the sun sets in the direction of where the "L" faces.

can someone clear this up for me please.

place down a piece of cobble, and look at the texture (deafult) there should be a "L" there, and the L is pointing nrth, for further info check out this video:

thats exactly my problem. im told that the sun sets in the west. and if thats true then the "L" is facing west not north.

so either the sun sets in the north or that video is wrong

Pro tip: Clouds always float west. so if you look up, and the clouds are floating left, you are facing north

If so then when the clouds are moving to my left, I am facing north. correct?

this is really starting to get confusing cause when reading the wiki it says "Before 1.9 pre-release 4, clouds were floating towards the north" but says nothing about 1.9 pr4 or anything after and when reading the site that they goth the info from it says only "The sun now rises on the right side of the map." and dosent say anything about clouds and dosent say what direction the right side of the map is nor anything about anything after pr4.

This needs solving cant anyone provide definitive proof.

From The Minecraft Wiki page on the Debug screen (hit F3 during game play)you will see on the left side an x, y, z, and f. (see IMAGE)

x player's location in meters East of 0,0
y player's altitude in meters (64 is sea level)
z player's location in meters South of 0,0
f player's facing (0-3: south, west, north, east)

So while in the game hit F3 and see what the f number is and compare to 0-3: south, west, north, east.

In Version 1.0.0 I get the Sun, Moon, and clouds all moving from East to West.

if thats true then 0= South; 1=West; 2=North; 3=East and thus when the sun is setting to your left you are facing north. damn the answers keep going back and forth. this is exhausting

Well that is correct. Just because the sun sets west irl, doesn't mean it does in minecraft. If

    that

was true, creepers would be in real life. God help us all.

    NO CLOUDS ALWAYS FLOAT NORTH

    I agree with Mr. Loudmouth.

Edit: I checked the wiki. They always float west. Mr. Loudmouth, U is rong!

but if thats right then the sun is still setting in the west

the wiki page is not definitive on this. it dosent say anything about 1.0.0 and the site it got the info from has no info at all about it as if the wiki just pulled the answer from thin air

    Quote from Sko

A quote from version history page:

    1.9pre4

    • The Sun and Moon now rise in the east and set in the west, based on the top of maps being North, and are round.

Ahh now thats more like a definitive answer. its too bad i would rather it set in the north but hey why not.
thank you for that. ive read it myself and and agree with you. I dont think i could get a more concrete answer.

If you can find north in real life it's that simple in Minecraft, the sun rises in the east and sets in the west som watching the sun you can make an arrow in all four directions by following Never Eat Soggy Waffles

How do you find North and south in Minecraft?

Minecraft has an accurate system of cardinal directions..
The sun and the moon rise in the east and set in the west. ... .
The stars turn counterclockwise around the north pole and clockwise around the south pole..
Clouds always float west, and are visible above-ground during day and night..

How do you find North in Minecraft without a compass?

Step 1 Stare at the clouds. Clouds drift north, and fairly quickly to boot, making this one of the easiest ways for Minecraft players to figure out north, south, east and west.
