Mission of the sisters of saint joseph

The Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart continue God’s mission by immersing themselves in the midst of life to empower others and bring hope.

The Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart shares in the one mission of Jesus, sent by the Father to proclaim the Kingdom. Our response to that call is shaped by our charism and our traditions. We serve in a variety of ministries: of being and presence, of suffering and healing, of educating and caring. Through these ministries we continue to experience and reveal God’s loving kindness.

What is the Spirituality of the Sisters of Saint Joseph?

Spirituality is a way of being and acting in the world that flows from one’s God experience. Sisters of Saint Joseph experience God as All-Embracing Love—a Love that is wholly inclusive and selfless in never ceasing to weave all into one. This core and intimate experience of God calls forth from us a deep desire to give our lives over to the ever-evolving, unifying movement of God.

Participation in this Divine Movement requires that we faithfully nurture a discerning heart; that is, that we be intentional about noticing the ways in which God’s Indwelling Spirit invites us daily to take the next best step within God’s unfolding design. Such attentiveness of heart leads us into deepening union with God in and through our loving service to the “dear neighbor”, especially to those who are most vulnerable. Thus, we use our gifts to do all we can to meet the unmet physical and spiritual needs of others, including those of our dear neighbor Earth.

Yet, even as we respond through works of service, we recognize that as Sisters of Saint Joseph, it is the manner of our relating that fosters a sense of oneness and nurtures the interconnectedness inherent throughout all creation. Having experienced the all-embracing, inclusive love of God ourselves, we are impelled to move toward others in the same way. We serve the dear neighbor with a presence that is welcoming, loving and compassionate towards all without distinction. The spirituality of the Sisters of Saint Joseph calls us to relate as God relates!

The Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, was founded by Mary MacKillop and Julian Tenison Woods in 1866, for the service of the poor.

Mission of the sisters of saint joseph

Its founding members were women who worked in a simple ordinary way to bring to the poor the message of their human dignity and of Christ’s saving love.

Today the Sisters of Saint Joseph continue that founding mission to relieve suffering and bring hope in today’s world.

St Joseph’s Spirituality and Education Centre is a ministry of the Sisters of Saint Joseph – NSW Province.

The Centre offers the opportunity for individuals and groups to experience spiritual enrichment and personal development in a peaceful and spacious setting. The facilities are available to those whose purpose is in harmony with the spirit and philosophy of the Sisters of Saint Joseph.

What do the Josephite Sisters do?

The Sisters of St Joseph is the order of nuns (sisters) that St Mary of the Cross MacKillop established to minister to the poor and vulnerable of her time. She took her vows as a nun on 19th March, 1866. This day was the Feast of St Joseph hence Joseph is one of the significant figures that guided Mary's life as a nun.

How did Mary MacKillop start the Sisters of St Joseph?

In 1866 MacKillop and Woods founded Australia's first order of nuns, the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart, and also established St. Joseph's School in a converted stable in Penola, providing a free education to children from the area.
