Ozark Season 4 episode 8 rapper

Created by Bill Dubuque and Mark Williams, Ozark premiered on Netflix back in 2017 and introduced audiences to a compelling world of tightly-wound tension.

However, the series finale has arrived, concluding a crime drama that has been hailed as one of the platform’s best shows. Before it finishes, on the other hand, we see Ruth Langmore (played by Julia Garner) take on one of her biggest challenges yet.

As she goes in search of Javi in the wake of Wyatt’s murder, she is accompanied by an album that plays on repeat, motivating her to get revenge.

Considering the record is clearly so important to her, who is Ruth listening to in Ozark?

Who is Ruth listening to in Ozark?

Ruth is listening to the album Illmatic by Nas in season 4 episode 8.

A number of tracks from the LP feature in the episode, with the song N.Y. State of Mind playing more than once.

Released in 1994, Illmatic is Nas’ debut studio album and is often regarded as one of the greatest and most important hip hop albums ever made, regularly featuring on greatest albums of all time lists.

It’s based on the rapper’s personal experiences growing up in Queens, New York City, with the lyrics exploring themes of poverty, crime, and gang rivalry.

In the episode we find her bumping into the rapper Killer Mike, known for his solo material and as one half of the hip hop duo Run the Jewels. He asks Ruth what she’s listening to and the pair briefly discuss Illmatic and the record’s timeless power.

‘It mirrored how Chris wrote Ruth’

Showrunner Chris Mundy and music supervisor Gabe Hilfer recently opened up to Okay Player about Ruth’s love for hip hop, with Gabe explaining:

“Her specific taste in hip-hop, I feel, grew out of this authenticity, which was her whole honesty and her character. Her not ever taking s**t, to me, that was a real hallmark of ’90s hip-hop, you know what I mean? It was almost just attitude driven for the art form… it wasn’t big money hip-hop at that time. It was just authentic. It mirrored how Chris wrote Ruth.”

Chris Mundy added: “And a lot of that music is aspirational too,” Mundy added. “And I think that matched up really well with her too, besides just being hard.”

They also confirm that it was Gabe who suggested Nas’ Illmatic as a recurring presence throughout the episode.

“I remember you called me. I remember this — you called me a week later and you were like, ‘Yep, that’s the one, that’s the album. I listened to Illmatic again and you’re right. That’s the one we should do,’” Gabe noted. “And so Illmatic became a part of it.”
