Desexing or neutering your pet is a surgical procedure that prevents them from being able to reproduce. This is one of the most frequent surgery performed by our vets and we aim to make this experience as stress free for both owner and pet.

We have reduced desexing fees and we aim to make desexing affordable for everyone. We frequently hold desexing days at even more reduced rates for Hume residents and are aiming to service people in other council shires as well.

There are many benefits to desexing your pet, they include:

  • Preventing unwanted litters, which can be very costly, and may add to the already overwhelming number of stray animals that are put down each year
  • Prevention of testicular cancer and prostate disease in males, and it can help prevent pyometra (infection of the uterus) and mammary tumours (breast cancer) in females
  • Stopping the “heat” cycle in females (females come into season approximately every 6 months)
  • Reduction of council registration fees

For more information in regard to desexing please call our veterinary team on 03 7002 6649

Did you know that 80% of pets suffer some form of dental disease, so they need regular check-ups too!

As your pet ages, they will naturally develop a layer of Plaque on their teeth, which hardens to become a solid layer over the tooth called Tartar. If not effectively managed, this can turn into Gingivitis, an inflammation of the surrounding gums. Any inflammation and infection of the gums can have a direct effect on your pet’s heart and kidneys.

Signs of dental disease include:

  • Bad Breath (Halitosis)
  • Inflamed Gums (Gingivitis)
  • Loose teeth
  • Facial swelling
  • Excessive Salivation (Drooling)
  • Reluctance to eat or chew

This space has carrier covers that have been sprayed with de-stressing  Feliway pheromones and stools for the carriers to be placed on so our kitty friends stay high and not down on the ground.

We hope that our kitty friends (and their lovely owners) enjoy their special waiting area.

  • Maintain good quality of life for palliative care patients
  • Minimise use of conventional medicine to reduce side effects

During the consultation, you will be discussing your concerns, your pet's entire medical history and lifestyle in order to understand the root cause of your pet's illness. The following holistic services are provided:

  • Acupuncture
  • Herbal medicine
  • Nutritional advice

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture (acus = needle; pungare = to pierce) is a healing practice that dates back to 8000 years ago. Very fine needles are placed in specific locations all around the body to bring the body back into balance in order for it to heal. There is little to no discomfort involved and some patients would even fall asleep during a short 15 to 30 minute session.

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture works locally by increasing blood flow to the area of interest. Systemically, the needles trigger a series of interactions among the nervous, endocrine and the immune system.

The needles are placed in points along meridians that are found to be similar to nerve pathways. The location of these points are surrounded by nerve endings and mast cells that can signal the body to release its own opioids for pain relief and also regulate immunity.

What conditions can acupuncture treat?

Pet acupuncture can be used to help treat a number of conditions such as:

  • Musculoskeletal: hip dysplasia, arthritis, disc disease, muscle and ligament injuries.
  • Nervous disorders: nerve injury, certain types of paralysis, anxiety
  • Poor appetite
  • Chronic gastrointestinal issues (vomiting, constipation and diarrhoea)
  • Skin conditions and allergies
  • Chronic kidney conditions
  • Wound treatment and healing
  • Urinary Tract issues (i.e.: incontinence, cystitis and other bladder problems)
  • Depressed immunity and immune system booster for cancer patients
  • Eye and ear ailments

Who would benefit from acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an adjunct therapy that may help in many diseases but not limited to:

  1. Painful conditions such as osteoarthritis, cruciate ligament injuries, degenerative joint diseases, intervertebral disc disease
  2. Acute diseases such as ear infections, pancreatitis, muscle strains
  3. Chronic diseases such as chronic kidney disease, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), immune mediated diseases, skin allergies
  4. Sudden behavioural change, seizures etc.

Is acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is one of the safest therapies if practiced by a competent acupuncturist. Side effects are rare because acupuncture stimulates the body’s own system of healing and no chemicals are administered, resulting very few complications.

What you should know before treatment

  1. As acupuncture triggers the body to heal itself, we recommend committing to at least 3 sessions before deeming it ineffective for your pet.
  2. The approach to treatment is customised to every patient's condition and temperament. We aim to provide a pleasant experience for your pet and strive to have your pet accept treatment voluntarily.
  3. A holistic consultation with Dr. Karmen will be required prior to the session.
  4. Please notify our staff if your pet has a long medical history or has multiple/chronic diseases.
  5. A form should be filled in and returned prior to the appointment.

Call us on 03 7002 6649 or visit us for more information about these services.
