How Often Do You Need To Worm Puppies?Current recommendations from the CDC and the American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists are to provide deworming medications against roundworms and hookworms at 2 weeks of age, repeating the dewormer every 2 weeks until the pups are 2 months old. Dose your puppies FOR ONE DAY – ONE DOSE – EVERY 2 WEEKS at 2,4,6,8,12 weeks. Then treat monthly from 2 months to 6 months of age to eliminate different developing stages of the intestinal parasites lifecycle. The lifecycle of most intestinal worms is 3 wks. Why Do You Use This Brand of Pyrantel Pamoate Instead of Ones Labeled for Dogs?The Columbia Labs bottle has 50 mg or Pyrantel Pamoate per mL and quite simply it’s just a lot MORE COST EFFECTIVE when you’re deworming litters of puppies or multiple dogs instead of buying multiple tiny 2 oz bottles of Nemex 2 or even the monthly treatment packs with 2 chew-able tablets (with 113.5 mg pyrantel pamoate per tablet which equals a total of 227 mg of pyrantel pamoate per pack) that cost you anywhere from $5 to $10 dollars per pack. The whole 32 oz bottle of Columbia Laboratories Pyrantel Pamoate 50 mg to 1 ml Suspension contains 24,000 mg of pyrantel pamoate, the equivalent of about 105 of those 2 chewable tablet packs. Or the 2 oz bottles of Nemex 2 or Durvet 2× which both cost between $12-$15 per bottle and with those you have to give your dogs 5 mL’s per 10 lbs of weight so, a 2 ounce bottle is not going to last you long if you’re treating 8-10 puppies several times before they go home! Becauee regardless, if you’re using the 50 mg per mL or the 4.5 mg per mL the puppy is still going to need the same dosage of the medication its just gonna have to take a LOT more “fluid fillers” with one and a tiny squirt with the other… you need to give a 10 pound puppy 5 mL’s of Nemex 2 and with the Columbia Labs you only give them 1/2 of 1 mL so it’s not rocket science why we use this bottle instead of the one labeled for dogs! You can deworm a few litters of puppies 3 times over and still use less then 2 ounces of the 50 mg/mL! I’ve never even finished a bottle. I end up throwing it away before I can finish it all because it’s expiring! I had one bottle for like 2 years and several litters and still didnt finish it. What is the Dosage Chart For Nemex 2 or Durvet 2 Then?The brands labeled for dogs like Nemex 2 or Durvet 2x or Strong T (4.54 mg per mL) marketed for dogs has a different dosage chart then the one above, the dosage for Nemex 2 is 1 teaspoon or 5 ml’s per 10 lbs of body weight so for a 20 lb. dog you would need to give them 10 mL’s (10 cc’s) or 2 teaspoons. *1 mL also equals 1 cc or 5 mls is equal to 1 teaspoon. That’s a lot of medication when the bottles are so small (only 2 ounces per bottle of Nemex 2)…. this can become VERY expensive when you’re deworming multiple dogs or litters of puppies that you’re deworming every 2 weeks. The dead and dying worms pass into the stool after administration of the deworming medication and then you may start to see them dispelled in the dogs feces. Tapeworm infections are usually diagnosed by finding segments which appear as small white worms that may look like grains of rice or seeds—on the rear end of your dog, in your dog’s feces, or where
your dog lives and sleeps. It can take as little as two hours for the worms to start dying off but in most cases, the process starts about 12 hours after the dewormer is given. You can see the dead and dying worms in your puppies feces for up to a week. Most tapeworm medications kill the adult tapeworms within 24 hours after they are given. In some cases
a second dose is needed 3-4 weeks later to kill any remaining adults and those that were larva at the time of the treatment. Since none of these treatments kill the immature forms of the worm or the migrating larvae, at least two or three treatments are needed for most types of worms. Treatments need to be done at two to three week intervals and should be started at 2 wks of age with puppies, along with their mother. Better yet,

I use Safe-guard to deworm my adult dogs every 6 months OR if I have pregnant dogs, then I will deworm my whole pack of dogs including the Mom – 10 days prior to whelping a litter of puppies. Keeping My Dogs Giardia and Worm Free!Most adult dogs will show zero symptoms of Giardia (giardia or giardiasis which is super common in even very healthy dogs) but they may still be able to pass it onto they’re newborn puppies so by treating all our dogs with Safeguard every 3-6 months and 10 days before any of them whelp a litter, I’ve been able to keep Giardia out of our yard and out of our litters for a long time now by attempting to catch it early in our adults and by treating all our puppies regardless of symptoms before they go home. Giardia while very common in dogs also has very little outward effect on adult dogs but it can still be dangerous in very young puppies or immune suppressed adult dogs.. and at the very least a nightmare to deal with. Its so common that adult dogs that they’ll usually develop an immunity to it by 6 months old — just like people who live in some countries where they can drink their own contaminated water and NOT get sick because they’ve become basically immune but when Americans travel and drink their water we get EXTREMELY SICK FROM THE PARASITES! They actually call this “travelers diarrhea“! Same concept in dogs. Adult dogs can gain an immunity to giardia and cocidia. Coccidia supposedly lives dormant in the dogs gut and then outbreaks are usually set off by high levels of stress like a new home, travel, shipping etc which will cause the protozoa to multiple enough to cause actual symptoms. That’s why sometimes a dog or puppy will show no symptoms of the disease until after they go to a new home and then all of a sudden they have severe diarrhea. That’s also why it’s so important to treat all new dogs that you bring onto your property, especially if you’re breeding dogs. Do Puppies Get Sick after Deworming?If a puppy or adult dog has a lot of worms and they all start to die off at once, then the lining of the intestines can become inflamed which can cause diarrhea, vomiting and lack of appetite. The puppies are usually back to normal within a day or two. F1 Labradoodle Puppies… However, seeing dead worms and signs and symptoms.. don’t ever need to happen, if you just start deworming your Dam 10 days before whelping with Safe-guard and then start a consistent deworming protocal with her and her puppies, they’ll never have to experience any of the unpleasant symptoms of a worms infestation and the deworming medication itself will very rarely make them sick. If you’re not a breeder then it’s still recommended to deworm your adult dog every 3 to 6 months regardless of symptoms. The life cycle of most intestinal parasites is 3 wks, that’s why it’s recommended to start deworming puppies at 2 wks and every 2 wks after, for the first 2 months of life, the worms won’t have a chance to develop and multiply if you catch the life cycle early in your puppies.
