South Dakota Air and Space Museum

Free museum featuring indoor & outdoor displays of aircraft, artifacts & a missile silo.

Slide 1 of 15

The South Dakota Air and Space Museum is an impressive collection of aircraft at the air base (it's outside the secure area though, so visiting it was no more complicated than visiting any museum.) There are lots of impressive artifacts inside the museum but even more fun is the collection of full size aircraft outside the museum!. The South Dakota Air and Space Museum is free to visit and has ample free parking. This is one of my top picks for any kid who loves airplanes, and especially for tween or teen boys who will be less interested in Storybook Island than their younger siblings.

Home to iconic planes, fighter jets, and artifacts from throughout history, the South Dakota Air and Space Museum will take you on a journey through the 20th century. Featuring a mix of galleries, exhibits and real aircraft, there are multiple ways to learn about the South Dakota’s and indeed the country’s rich aviation history. Highlights of your visit will no doubt be the 30 military planes that flew in the Second World War.

A must see if you love military planes. Great to see the B1,B52,B25,B29 and others up close! Hopefully the museum will acquire a B2 and an A10 someday. If you’re lucky you might see a B1 take off from the base like I did! Totally awesome!! We’ve had some great military planes protecting our sky’s!

Relatively small museum who's pride and joy is clearly the exterior static displays. I've been to many air & space museums and this was the first with a B-29 (and a gorgeous example at that). A B-1, B-52, a rare F-111, A7, an ICBM and many other interesting and lovingly maintained examples of the United States military might can be viewed up close outside the museum. Highly recommended.

This was recommended to us by a local hotel owner. Unfortunately, the inside display was closed for renovations. But some great planes outside.

Full Throttle Saloon

Huge biker bar showcased on reality TV for its many amenities, from zip lines to music stages.

Slide 1 of 3

My husband and I stopped by Full Throttle as we were trucking through. We were immediately greeted by Kimm, who warmly invited us in for a tour and insisted that we bring in our 3 fur babies. What a nice surprise! My photos say it all. We definitely want to come back.

We didn’t stay at FT but we did stop in here for a day. The we tried to find a shirt to bring home for our daughter and we finally did but there weren’t many options. Finding a spot to sit and rest is nearly impossible no chance getting more than one spot at the bar. We loved the art they had everywhere. Cool place overall I recommend everyone go see this slice of history.

This is a must see when you are at the Sturgis MC Rally. There are many choices for food. We had the steak tips and they were good. The beer was cold and you had a very large selection. I had a Sierra Nevada Brewing Company Pale Ale which was excellent. Full Throttle Saloon offers a 24 oz heavy glass beer mug at a great price and you keep the mug. There are several bar's outside. They have live music, check out the website for a schedule. The gift shop offers many great items.

Between Omaha and Columbus street is where you’ll find the vibrant Downtown Rapid City. It’s the perfect spot to begin your travels here, with plenty of things to do for all kinds of people, young and old. In the heart of downtown is Main Street Square.

I love hiking M-Hill and hanging out at any of the coffee shops in town. Of all the places to go in Rapid City, downtown is a definite favorite.

Went to Mitzi's Books and found a new baking book to play with. Also the St Joe antiques mall is always worth walking through. This stone lamp had me laughing and my mom confused.

Neat town to walk around downtown, seeing statues of all the president's, and many are in different poses - not just standing on the corners - the city did it right! Good places to eat, also.

There are lots of statues in Downtown Rapid City. We got there around dinner time, walked around, spun lots of Pokestops, and were quite happy that they weren’t charging for parking at the time. Unfortunately, the place that we were planning to eat was closing almost at the time that we were going to arrive, so we went somewhere else. It was a nice walk, very clean, and felt very safe.

This is a stunning landscape for honoring this nation's deceased veterans. It is the final resting place for many vets and this cemetery recognizes their service to the United States.

BEAUTIFUL final resting place and very well taken care as well for those who served this Country. I know because I have 5 FAMILY members and several friends that are at rest now and a few more family members that will be laid to rest there in the next couple of years. Blessing, love and honor to all those who have served this country without question. Thank You! Since the time I wrote this, we have laid my father in law to rest as well. Four family members are now at rest in this beautiful place for our vets and spouses. Sadly! My mother has passed and she will be laid to rest with my father, SFC Harvey Varns. The National Cemetery makes the final preparations so comforting and easy. What a Blessing all those who work to help with the final preparations at the National Cemetery truly are!

Kitschy 1930s cement dinosaurs star at this 20-acre park on a hill with city & prairie views.

The Black Hills Symphony Orchestra was assembled in the 1930s with a small group of string players. More than 80 years later it has grown to include over 90 musicians. Their mission is simple, “to provide the finest orchestral performance and symphonic music education for the people of the Black Hills region.” They offer multiple seasonal productions each year at the Performing Arts Center of Rapid City.

Rapid City is home to many public parks and play spaces, maybe none as unique as Dinosaur Park. Alongside a great view of the city on Skyline Drive, this 1930s established park also has various dinosaurs to pose and take pictures with. Overlooking the horizon, these massive dinosaur statues are iconic landmarks of the city and provide a fun reason to get outside and enjoy the view.

This is a totally free roadside attraction that is set atop a great vantage point where several enormous concrete dinosaurs stand watch over the City of the Presidents. The figures of prehistoric creatures are connected by sidewalks and are perfect for posing and family pictures. There’s even a small snack station adjacent to the parking lot (but the goodies are NOT free).

The art and cultural activities in Rapid City will give you an insight into the city's history, traditions, and artwork. This classic Rapid City attraction was built by the CCC during the Great Depression and sits on the top of a hill. More art walk than playground, the park features huge concrete dinosaurs along a winding path. Unfortunately there are many stairs, so it cannot be easily accessed by wheelchair or stroller.

Fossils were once found in Rapid City on the sandstone ridge that's surrounded by the Black Hills. In honor of this former excavation site, the area has been converted to Dinosaur Park, the home of seven massive dinosaur replicas and a heck of a lot of fun. Play with history at Dinosaur Park

Since the 1930’s, seven cement dinosaurs have stood on a sandstone ridge overlooking Rapid City and the Black Hills. These dinosaurs were created to draw visitors coming to the area to see Mount Rushmore into Rapid City. Hike the stairs and visit each dinosaur and learn a little about them!

Dinosaur Park sits on a sandstone ridge in Skyline Drive, Rapid City. It is one of Black Hill’s original tourist attractions, beginning in 1936. Kids and young adults will marvel at its seven life-sized concrete replicas of dinosaurs during the Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous periods.

This park is unmissable as you can see the Apatosaurus on top of the hill from many points in Rapid City. Several dinosaurs overlook the city, and there are nice views of the city and west from here. The park is on the list of National Register of Historic Places.

South Dakota has lots of connections to the age of dinosaurs. It’s a part of state culture and something you can experience here in Rapid City. Dinosaur Park was created in the 1930s and is perched on a hill that grants excellent views of downtown.

Overlooking downtown Rapid City, you will find a favorite city attraction – the Dinosaur Park!. The Dinosaur Park is home to seven life-sized, realistic dinosaur sculptures. Kids love seeing the gigantic sculptures and playing near them.

Really cool place to stop! There are several stairs since it's at the top of a hill so it's a nice place to stretch your legs during a drive. The dinosaurs are cool and there's also a gift shop/visitor center (though it was closed when I went). Nice view from the top and there's some benches as well. It's free and there's also a big free parking lot at the visitor center. I would recommend a visit!

One of my kids loves dinosaurs, so here is a park with dinosaurs! With great views, trail, (visitor center: for us was closed for the season) it is not a big park, but it’s a great place to stay for around a hour, walk, take some pics, climb the dinos and enjoy the views of the city. Supposedly there are real dinosaur’s footprints, we can’t find them, or maybe I was misinformed. Enough parking.

Great little park to take the kids to. You can tell the statues are very dated, but the plaque said it was built in the 1930s and there's no admission fee so I suppose it's to be expected. Your kids won't care anyways. You have a 360 degree view of the city from the highest point and the sunset is gorgeous. Definitely come if you have kids who are into dinos, or even if you just want a nice view of the city.

Very fun family friendly stop during our trip passing through the area. Lots of classic characters to see that young and old will both enjoy .... They even have a train you can go for a little ride in.

So, so much to see and do. My kids loved running from place to place. Several fun play areas with scenes from fairytale, Disney stories, nursery rhymes, etc. Wish we had more time here.

This place is amazing. So wonderful. We went on a super hot day, so we only stayed about an hour. But a family could spend the entire day there if you wanted. Such a wonderful place.

Most would not expect to find a reproduction of the of the famous Borgund Stavkirke of Laerdal, Norway in South Dakota. In the 1960’s, the Norwegian Department of Antiquities provided a set of blueprints so the Chapel in the Hills could be an exact replica of the original. The chapel is constructed completely of wood except for the metal ornaments on the door.

Chapel in the Hills is a replica of a famous 12th-century Borgund Stave Church in Norway. This unique looking building features intricate wood carving, Norse dragonheads, Christian symbols, and pegged construction. The building of this church was propelled by Rev. Harry R. Gregerson, who was inspired by the Norwegian heritage of the region.

Arguably the most striking piece of architecture in Rapid City is the Chapel in the Hills. In the 1100s, the Borgund Stave Church was built in Norway before becoming a famous Nordic structure. Inspired by this and Rapid City’s own Norwegian heritage, Reverend Harry Gregerson set about recreating the chapel.

This chapel is in the pines of the Western edge of Rapid City and is an exact reproduction of the famous Borgund Stavkirke of Laerdal, Norway. It is free for all visitors and is quite beautiful in its craftsmanship. Make sure to check the website before you visit, as it is a seasonal site.

Chapel in the Hills is a Lutheran church that’s a replica of an actual Stave church in Norway. The surrounding gardens are beautiful, and you can take a short hike on the meditation trail behind the church. Make sure you visit the grass roofed gift shop to buy Norwegian items.

Chapel in the Hills was built in the Old Norse medieval architectural style and is, in fact, an exact replica of the Borgund stave church in Norway.

This Church was beautifully done. A definite Architectures Dream a must to see while in Rapid City SD. There was a Wedding getting ready to take place while we were there as well.

I'm Christian but not to involved in my religion, but this place took my breath away and for the first time I teared up while looking at something so beautiful and meaningful, this place is astounding. Even if your not religious I highly recommend coming to see this beautiful wooden architecture.

Beautiful place. Walk the prayer trail and snap a photo on the way back of the statues with the church in the background. Listen to the narration in the church, interesting.

Wonderland Cave

Nature & Parks

Caverns & Caves

Slide 1 of 3

Really glad we went! It wasn’t part of our original plan, but my wife and I both enjoy caves. Alex, the tour guide, was very entertaining and educational. Don’t lose hope, it seems very far away if you are following the signs, but it is only 5 miles from the main road. The climb out of the cave is 127 steps. Take it slowly!

A worthwhile stop. The cave may not be the most gorgeous one, but there are some neat formations to see and the tour guide was great. I've never been on a tour of a "live" cavern before, complete with dripping ceiling, etc. That's not a negative comment... other caves I've visited look more like abandoned mines, whereas this one is more active.

Once you get through the winding roads you take a dirt road into the site... Which may seem like forever but it's not I promise. It's a beautiful drive. Inside the cave was great experience of some beautiful sites good for all ages. There is a slightly narrow and steep staircase down which for some might be difficult though. Our guide was informative and so much fun. The staff inside the store was so wonderful as well! Next time we're out that way we will definitely go back!

AMAZING!! I’ve been to many museums and zoos in DC and MD, but this is probably one of the best ones I’ve seen!!! The animals seem very well cared for, their habitats all usually have some sort of mineral, crystal, or personal touch so that it’s more interesting to look at the enclosure. Each reptile has a few interesting facts that are so much fun to read! And overall they have many interesting facts all over the building that you can look at and say, “wow, whaaaat that’s so interesting”. It seems like they put a lot of effort into keeping the viewer engaged and possibly become more knowledgeable about the animals. The dome shaped building is where the bulk of the reptiles are, it looked small at first, but the layout of the building allows for it to be full of SO much content and things to look at!! The gift shop was very reasonably priced! I ended up getting 7 souvenirs for my family back home and it only ended up costing 45$ with military discount ! Last but definitely not least, the prairie dogs!! They’re not even reptiles but I really love the fact that they included them. I’ve never seen them before and watching them interact was so funny and adorable. I love the little dome you can stand in to be at their level. I LOVED THIS PLACE !! Below are photos of the prairie dogs, snakes, their habitat, some of the facts posted, a crocodile with its mouth open, and tortoises

The family had a good time here for what we could see. We came during the off season so we didn't get to see everything. The grounds were well kept and the staff was nice. We're going to try to make it back during the regular season and enjoy everything.

Was amazing! Lots to see even off season. In the summer there will be a lot more open and a lot more to do but we went on Easter when we were visiting the area for a family memorial. Posting a lot of photos for you to see!😉

I love this place! Made the visit while going to Mount Rushmore & this turned out to be the highlight of the trip. Drive thru portion was great but the walk thru part was amazing! The baby bears are adorable! A definite 'must see'!

I have to admit, I thought this place would be the typical tourist trap. I was so wrong. This place was amazing and worth every penny. It’s awesome for kids and adults. We saw at least 20 different bears. They were just walking around. We saw 3 types of wolves, various elk/reindeer, coyotes, foxes, horned sheep, and so much more. You drive through and it takes about 45 minutes depending on how slow or fast you drive. There is a separate part you get out and walk around to see the animals such as bear cubs. I wasn’t expecting to see many animals or animals this close! It was a great experience for all ages.

I was pleasantly surprised by the tour. This is a sealf guided driving tour. We saw a lot of animals Dear, Bears both brown and black bears, Elk, Rain dear, artic wolf's. All the animals we visable and easy to see. At the end of the driving tour there is a very nice visitor center and gift shop and a small zoo type exhibits. Really enjoyed the visit.

Brings me back to my childhood... layback, great food, and awesome way to spend time as a family♥️💜 I'm so happy to allow my children to experience they will never forget and cherish it as I have. Great prices and friendly staff! Beautiful surroundings... 💜♥️

Very cool experience for adults to kids. Prices for admission are fair. Popcorn was not the best almost tasted old and was burnt. They don't want you to bring in your outside food, but they need to make sure what they are serving is quality. Parking was a bit of a battle, we got there at least 45 min early, but had to park more on the side, the first place I tried to park I was yelled at by someone saying I couldn't park there. We had a mini van with 7 people and we're not able to park backwards like most people. The man told me the row I was in was for cars only (I thought it was only the 1st two rows) we were in at least the 3rd or 4th row. Any how later on other mini vans were parking in the same area so I guess that was karma for him. We brought a few blankets for the kids to sit outside on. We will go again, but hope for a better experience next time.

Perfect summer night in South Dakota and what to do? Why go to a drive-in movie! Visiting from the east and hasn’t been to a drive in in 30 years! Roy’s has 2 screens each with double features and you tune on the sound through your radio. Even had the dog with us in the van. Loved it!

Tatanka Story of Bison

Unique spot featuring bison & Native American history exhibits, life-size sculptures & a gift shop.

Slide 1 of 8

About Tatanka Story of The Bison: One of the many things people expect to see when they come to South Dakota is bison. Experiencing bison in the wild is a unique encounter that sticks with you forever. Tatanka is a Lakota word that refers to bison, and it translates as “big beast.” If you’ve ever been up close to a bison, you know that they certainly are big beasts.

Sculpture Parks1 mile north of Deadwood on US 85, Deadwood, SD 57732MoreLess Info. Deadwood, South Dakota's 'Tatanka: Story of the Bison' is a Native American art installation dedicated to bison and the crucial role of these animals in Native American life and culture. The adjacent gift shop is worth a visit.

This museum invites you to cross the threshold within its walls to unlock the Story of the Bison. Here, you’ll get yet another history lesson about the area. However, this one isn’t so focused on the Old West as much as it is on the 30 to 60 million bison that once roamed the Heartland.

It pays tribute to the beast that once roamed the great American plains in the west. The bison played a role in American History and this place tells us the story of it. A recreated encampment tells us about the culture, traditions and lifestyle of the Native Americans in the past.

Tatanka is positioned at the northern part of Deadwood in South Dakota. Tatanka is a significant contribution to giving honour to numerous bison. The bison number is almost in millions.

Wonderful museum with a 20 minute narrative that is very informative. We also enjoyed the bronze statues out back depicting the buffaloe hunt. Nice personal and we love the gift shop with lots of home made items.

Excellent movie and tour! The speaker was very informative. It's a shame Kevin Cosner has to sell it.

We enjoyed our visit greatly, the movie was very informative about how Tatanka came about. Spotted Eagle was very knowledgeable of the Lokota people and the bison story. Well worth the visit.

Mount Moriah Cemetery

Cemetery

Sights & Landmarks

History buffs can see the graves of Wild Bill Hickok & other notable personalities of the Old West.

Slide 1 of 11

This late-Victorian cemetery opened in 1878, overlooking Deadwood Gulch — the narrow and steep ravine that runs along the town — from a plateau. It was the official resting place for the town until 1938, and still is if your family owns a plot there (otherwise residents are buried in Oakridge Municipal Cemetery a mile away). A smaller cemetery existed before Mount Moriah in nearby Whitewood Gulch, and Moriah was meant to completely replace it.

If you want a different kind of education on Deadwood’s history as an Old Western town, Mount Moriah Cemetery has what you’re looking for. Just a few of the names interred here are Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane, so it shows you exactly what kind of history lesson you’re getting at this historical cemetery. Unlike most cemeteries, they charge a small fee for entry.

About Mount Moriah Cemetery: Exploring old cemeteries is either something you find incredibly interesting or strangely creepy. If you’re someone who thinks they’re interesting, you’ll love checking out Mount Moriah Cemetery. It’s filled with history and notable people dating from the 1800s.

The very stunning Mount Moriah Cemetery lies on a mountain plateau. This site got set up in 1878, and the cemetery is the last resting spot of loads of murderers, madams, and pillars. Apart from being a graveyard, the site has got many magical things for its travellers.

Deadwood, South Dakota is home to the Mount Moriah Cemetery, a scenic burial ground nestled between two hills. It contains the mortal remains of many local celebrities and others who were influential in founding and running Deadwood in its earliest years.

Calamity Jane (born Martha Jane Burke; 1852–1903) and Wild Bill Hickok (1837–76) rest side by side up on Boot Hill at the very steep cemetery. Entertaining bus tours leave five times daily, May to October, from the visitor center.

This is the final resting place of the pillars of Deadwood’s economic development. Legends of the Wild West lie buried here. Here the American Flag does not only fly from sunrise to sunset.

We ended our trip to Deadwood coming here to pay respect to all of the people that have passed. The walk up to Seth and Martha's burial is well worth it. Very peaceful.

Great stop to connect with some of the legends of the old west... Make sure to check out the visitor center as it has some neat historical items on display and interesting info. Its also better to visit earlier in the day as the parking area is kinda small so best to catch it before it fills up. I'm glad that I made the longer trek up the hill to visit the Bullocks burial area.

Very steep walk, but absolutely worth it in good weather. Wild Bill and Calamity Jane are near the bottom, but don't miss all of the other gorgeous and historical grave sites higher up. Seth Bullock is quite a hike, up a non paved, non maintained path, but extremely lovely and peaceful once you get there.

Adams Museum

Joint venture combining a Black Hills history museum & the 1892 home of one of Deadwood's founders.

Slide 1 of 9

W.E. Adams was a pioneer businessman, a six-term mayor of Deadwood, and deliciously wealthy. In 1920, he purchased a Queen Anne-style mansion built in 1892 by pioneers Harris and Anna Franklin, complete with stained glass windows, hand-painted canvas wallpaper, plumbing, electricity and a phone. The house (now known as the Adams House) quickly became the epicenter of Deadwood’s rich and famous—Adams and his wife hosted parties with full orchestras and guest lists chock full of influencers.

W.E Adams, who was the former mayor, founded the Adams Museum in 1930. This museum is considered the oldest museum in the Black Hills. Inside, there is an enormous collection of personal belongings of Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane.

Absolutely loved this museum!!! You could easily spend all day here taking in all the exhibits and information! An awesome place to learn about the history of Deadwood.

Husband and child #3 went snowmobiling for the day and we found this little treasure of a museum. I wouldn’t drive an hour JUST to see it, but I would absolutely stop if you have time to lolligag around. It has many little interactive exhibits for the kids and at $9 for all of us total, it was a great way to spend 1.5 hours!

Went in October of 2021. Small, but has a REALLY great and varied collection! Actual gold nuggets, a real locomotive, a full plesiosaur skeleton, 2-headed calf, Native American beadwork, and a TON of old western memorabilia! There are descriptions and explanations for literally everything! Really informative, and also really cheap (about 5 bucks per person as a donation). So it's well worth the time. Like most of Deadwood, parking at the location is non-existant, so walking to it from a public lot or close by is your only option... so be prepared if you need to use a wheelchair.

Adams House

1892 home of Deadwood pioneer W. E. Adams, with original furnishings & personal items on display.

Slide 1 of 9

Are you looking to explore the history of Deadwood through the ages?. There are a number of historical destinations in Deadwood including the time-honored buildings, monuments, palaces, and parks where you can learn about the glorious past of Deadwood. The presence of these historical sites and museums will take you on a walk through Deadwood ‘s rich history.

Harris and Anna Franklin built this historic home back in 1892. Known at the time as “The Grandest House West of the Mississippi,” this house served as a turning point for Deadwood, whose roots were once upon a time in the gold mining industry. Their son, Nathan, bought the home and sold it in 1920 to W.E.

About Adams House: The historic Adams House was built in 1892. Deadwood’s business leaders would often gather there for dinner and discuss the day’s events. The home was well known for its oak interiors, stained-glass windows, and modern plumbing.

It was called the Grandest house to the west of Mississippi. This Queen Anne Style Victorian mansion was built in the year 1892. This house is a symbol of prosperity for Deadwood.

Such a cool stop. It wasn't a super long tour, but it was very informative. I do just wish that we got more time in each room. It was a large group of about 20 people and basically as soon as our guide was finished talking we had to go to the next room. Would have loved just a few more moments to look at everything.

If you're in Deadwood, I highly recommend visiting the Adams House. The decor was stunning and home has been well-preserved for the era. We arrived about 1045am just in time to take a guided 40 min tour of the home at 11am. There were about a dozen people in our tour which was comfortable but not crowded. You may take pics (no flash) along the way. If you only have a small amount of time in town, this home is definitely worth the stop.

A very lovely Christmas tour of the beautiful Adam's house in Deadwood. During December the tours are self guided and not very crowded.

Mount Rushmore National Memorial

Memorial park

Sights & Landmarks

Massive mountainside sculpture drawing crowds for its depiction of 4 former American presidents.

Slide 1 of 5

Start your day off with a visit to Mount Rushmore National Memorial, the famous rock carving dedicated to four influential US presidents. Watch a film at the Lincoln Borglum Visitor Center to learn about how and why Mount Rushmore was carved, and walk the short Presidential Trail. Usually you can also visit the studio where artist Guzton Borglum worked from 1939 to 1941, but the studio is currently undergoing renovations until May 2019.

Looking like they're either emerging from or being absorbed by the mountain, the stony faces of past presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt – carved 60ft tall in the granite of a Black Hills outcrop – are one of the most famous images in the USA and the top attraction in the state; the monument gets nearly three million visitors each year.

A wonderful piece of Americana accessible to all. The park has many modern refinements including a museum with video streaming a gift shop restrooms and a restaurant. There's also covered parking available. Inexpensive and cold this time of year so be prepared. City of keystone mostly closed so don't plan on seeing anything there. Definitely worth the trip.

Loved loved it! You gotta visit this monument at least once in your life. Parking is good for 1 year as well which is great. My little family and I took a trip to see this beauty during spring break. The weather was wonderful even in March. It was not crazy busy like it's prime season so I recommend it even though most things are not open until April and May. I still loved the fact that it was not overly crowded. We all loved the trail hike and seeing it up closer. A great nature trail walk. We also loved seeing all the flags of each state which was really cool.

What can I say about this historic monument that hasn't already been said yet? Mount Rushmore is a fantastic place to visit. The place is beautiful, clean, full of interesting information and family friendly for all ages. You only pay for parking, which is 10 dollars. The place built around it is very well done. It has a restaurant with several food options, restrooms scattered around the place, trails to see the monument up close, theaters showing a short but informative film about the place, etc. There is a huge gift shop with many interesting items too. Masks were not mandatory when I went (March 2022).

Custer State Park

Huge nature preserve featuring scenic views, trails & resorts among the flora & fauna.

Slide 1 of 5

Mt Rushmore may lure travelers to the Black Hills, but it's nearby Custer State Park that often creates the most lasting memories. Not only does it boast some of the best American wildlife viewing outside of Yellowstone, but also curvaceous mountain drives, serene lakeside retreats and plenty of open range.

From Mount Rushmore, continue south to Custer State Park, possibly my favorite part of the Black Hills!. There is an entry fee to this park (it's not covered by a National Parks Pass), but it's well worth the cost.

Custer State Park is AMAZING. Even though it’s not a national park it is very much worth all the time you can give it. The wildlife loop is a must do, along with stopping at all the scenic overlooks. The Needles highway is breathtaking too. We saw a ton of bison, along with some burros and a pronghorn. The landscape and wildlife are great.

This place is breathtaking. You're going to need plenty of space in your device for pictures. You're also going to need plenty of time to drive. There are several places along the highways to pull off safely for pictures. Go South for the Wildlife Loop, or go North for the Eye of the Needle. Personally, the Needle was my favorite. There are also plenty of lodges with dining available. However, they were all closed for the winter season during our trip.

You can never go wrong w Custer State Park. The wildlife loop, scenic drives, picturesque lakes, rock formations...so much to see and experience! We loved the easy walk around Legion Lake. Watch the Buffalo from your camp site at the Game Lodge. Quintessential Black Hills fun.

Moonshine Gulch Saloon

Slide 1 of 3

What an AWESOME place lost in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Owner Betsy and her son Dan are so great to talk to. They make you feel like you've always known them and you belong in this little saloon. Good burgers and hot dogs, and their fries are the best. Hand cut and perfect. Cheap beers and you can buy 6 packs to go as well. I'll definitely be coming back here the next time I'm in SD.

New owners!! They're cleaning up around the edges but keeping the Gulch vibe, oh yeah!! The Sunday music jams are legendary...

I'm not from around here, but I've come up here on 20+ vacations, and we never will miss moonshine gulch saloon. Beer is cheap, the atmosphere is basically a time warp in the most wonderfully nostalgic way, the gal that runs it (Betsy, I think) is a true gem. Last time I was there, I ran into a group of people from a few miles from where I grew up. It is worth the drive and there's so much to look at. It's a major hole in the wall and I love it.

1880 Train - Hill City Depot

Vintage steam locomotive that's carried visitors back & forth through the Black Hills since 1957.

Slide 1 of 3

I have taken the train twice this year. Once in summer and once at Christmas. Very nice for the kids and kids at heart. Get there early to watch them set up the train and connect the cars.

This is an absolute must-do when up in the area. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our ride from Hilly City to Keystone and back on the train. The views are breath-taking, the ride is full of so much history and information, and more importantly, the time spent together was wonderful. You get to see parts of the Hills you don't otherwise get to see, but to do it in historic train coaches was just perfect. Definitely will come and do again!

This was a fun adventure - our kids had never been on a train before. This ride takes you through the countryside and has neat historical sites and wildlife along the way! Our children range in age from 12-1 and they all enjoyed the experience! The day was a warm one, and the open air ride was perfect for keeping us comfortable. Tranquil lake area for swimming, canoeing, hiking, picnicking & rock climbing on large outcroppings.

Slide 1 of 4

Make for Sylvan Lake first, which is the perfect spot to stop for an early picnic lunch. (Or, if picnicking isn't your thing, you can also have lunch at the Sylvan Lake Lodge.)

We just happened upon this lake while driving through the Black Hills to another destination. We stopped, in awe of the view and spent a good amount of time there. We actually went to 2 lakes and I can't remember which pictures are from which but they were both in the same general area... Not too far apart. As you will see in my pictures, it was a little chilly out there that morning in mid July 2015. You'll also see a picture of my brothers in law reading a note that we found in a bottle that was floating on the lake. The bottle also contained $5!!! 😀

I love the walking paths and the views! I would highly recommend that you visit this place. It is $20 to get into the park, and the gift shop is overpriced, but otherwise Sylvan was a very pleasant experience. I also recently found out that Sylvan lake was used in movie called National Treasure 2. You can find the rock that they filmed on in one of the pictures I attached.

Very quiet relaxing stop. The hike around and behind the lake is more moderate than beginner and definitely not wheelchair accessible. There are several other hikes available, plenty of parking, cabins for rent, as well as a gift store and restrooms.

The forest has an area of over 1.25 million acres and is managed by the Forest Service. The forestry personnel are NOT FRIENDLY AT ALL!!! We didn't know what to expect visiting here and it was breathtaking. If you have time, explore the needles highway (which goes through the state park nearby too). Crazy Horse Memorial

Monument

Sights & Landmarks

Started in 1948, this vast, unfinished mountain carving shares a site with a Native American museum.

Slide 1 of 4

Make a stop at the Crazy Horse Memorial on your way north on Highway 385. The Memorial was begun in 1948 by sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski, and his children are still working on the larger-than-life sculpture. Even though the sculpture is still a work in progress, you can visit the Crazy Horse Memorial Welcome Center, the Indian Museum of North America, the Native American Educational & Cultural Center, and the the sculptor’s workshop. This is also a good place to see/purchase native artwork and crafts, especially during the summer months.

I enjoyed our visit very much. It was better than I expected. There’s a great educational video at the beginning and many interesting exhibits. We rode the bus up to the base of the monument and it showed the massive scale of the project. We visited Mt. Rushmore afterwards and my kids all said afterwards that they preferred Crazy Horse, which I thought was interesting and unexpected.

Great memorial to see if you're already in the area to check out Mount Rushmore (if you are in the area for a different reason as well, but I'm going to guess 99.9999% of you are in the area to see Mount Rushmore). It would be cool if this memorial ever gets finished, but based on what they told us it's a long shot where funding is concerned. There's always hope, but, "it's the hope that kills you" (-Ted Lasso). Definitely cool to check out and a nice sculpture to pay homage to South Dakotans.

The scale of the project is enormous! Hope to see it finished in the future. The entire complex offers views of Crazy Horse. Did not take the bus ride to get closer but the museum, gift shop, theatre, and viewing areas were worth the visit. The cost was around $20-$25 for an all day pass.

One of the best parks I've been to. Plenty of things to do both outside and joining a tour of the cave. The rangers are exceptionally friendly and knowledgeable. At the visitor station there's a nice museum restrooms gift shop and vending machines. If you come to South Dakota make sure you take the tour of the cave or you'll miss something fantastic.

Very, very beautiful and cool cave and park. Very worth the time and distance to get there. We saw a few bison and even saw a coyote wandering among the thousands of Prarie Dog mounds. Visitor center was great, had lots of really interesting information about the cave history and animals and environment in the park. Staff was friendly and helpful just like all National Park Staff are. Cave tour was great and worth the money. Beautiful and unique features. We took the natural entrance tour. There are quite a few stairs but almost all are going down with an elevator at the end. Moderately strainuous. Don't be late for cave tours purchased online, no refunds. Arrive at least 15-20 minutes early.

We went on two tours, both with the same guide, but on different levels of the cave. Wind cave has unique features that made both tours well with the trip. The hike to the fire tower in the park was also quite enjoyable. Plenty of buffalo grazing near the park roads for great photo opportunities

The Mammoth Site

Many mammoth remains, preserved in an old sinkhole, are shown off at this museum & research center.

Slide 1 of 4

After the Needles Highway, continue south to the town of Hot Springs, South Dakota, where you'll find the Mammoth Site. This is a super cool active paleontological dig site containing the world's largest concentration of mammoth bones (actual bones, not fossils!).

Pretty cool history here. Easy to get to and plenty of parking. We spent quite a while look around the main exhibit. You are able to get up close to a lot of the dig and there's good explanations of what you're looking at while walking. Plan on about 90 minutes to walk through at a causal pace.

Worth a stop if you get to Hot Springs, SD! I didn't know this place was here until we were looking for our hotel and it popped up on Google maps. I'm glad we walked through it. Great displays & information!

Very informative and well done preservation area. Features remains of variety of animals from per-historic era most notably mammoths. It is an active dig site so there are tools and scientists on site doing research. There is a very informative video explaining how the site came to be (from a sink hole that animals got stuck in) and how it was found in the 1970s. The tour is self-guided with information on plaques and through an audio guide (obtained via a smart phone app). Overall very good experience and would recommend to anyone visiting the black hills area. Just an FYI, it is approximately 15 mins from the Wind Cave National Park visitors center (where you begin your cave tours). If you are buying tickets and have a long wait you can buy them further out and plan on visiting this area in the meantime. We purchased our cave tour tickets around 10am and had a tour time of 1:30. We were able to visit the Mammoth site in between and arrived back with plenty of time before our cave tour.

Incredible tour of gorgeous caves. This is the 4th cave we have visited and it is unique and beautiful. It is easy to see how it got it's name. We did the scenic tour which was a little pricy for a National Monument ($16 ea) but worth it. We were able to purchase our tickets online but there was no discount for holders of the senior lifetime pass but it is easy to see the investments they have made to this site. New elevators and metal walkways/steps are a big upgrade from other caves we have visited. I highly recommend seeing this cave if you have a chance.

Gotta go see it. How can you skip on the 3rd longest tunnel system in the world? Let your kids get their junior ranger badges. Scenic tour is great, but don't expect to be able to stop and take a lot of photos as there are a lot of stairs. Enjoy the moment as you are in it with your friends and family.

During our visit we took the Discovery tour, this and the Lantern tour are the only two tours available because the park is renovating the elevator. (August 2021) Although the tour was short, it gave us a glimpse of the world below. The cave is fascinating with many colors and formations decorating the walls of the cave. Our ranger guide was excellent, enjoyed her knowledge of the cave during the whole tour. Giving this 4 stars only because of the elevator renovation, it is definitely a 5star location, just giving myself something to look forward to in the future.

Cascade Falls

Several beautiful, rare, shallow, fast running falls and their clear pools with a walking path beside them. Easy access from the associated picnic are.

The water was cool and refreshing. It is a beautiful area but there isn't a lot of space when it gets busy. The garbage cans were overflowing. I would recommend to visit during the week or during an off time. We also had a couple family members that had stuff stolen so use caution!

Neat little secluded area. The kids enjoyed cooling off. It's not super warm but felt good on a hot day.
