A good malevolent hide and seek game requires gloss black and neon reds, and icon adornments, like a semi-indie rock cassette graphic. Also, a mansion, with large gold trinkets, and lots of candles. Well, it does now! The family of Le Domas has invited the bride of their young son, Alex(Mark O'Brien), to the ornate lodging. This family is distinctly rich, and all the family members are cut out shapes, each of themselves a portrayal of greed and narrow mindedness. There are many states of polar experiences solicited from the various minstrel-like characters, and Grace the new bride(Samara Weaving), focuses all of our tensions in her arbitrarily forced struggle.
Grace is the hunted prey in a macabre cat and mouse hunt. This game is pulled-off as tradition, because from a dark incantation, the Le Domas family must play the game that is revealed on the card lifted out of the box by Grace. Grace is stalked throughout the richly panneled mansion house, and the allegro piano theme music has a carnival cheapness and jocularity. The movie "Ready Or Not" is an expose of suspense and dexterous plot-twist innovations. In this seance scenario, the inflated characters are the players of another dimension, and as such, are the visible chess pieces to a frolic and play design, and maze of chase.
This is better than a collage of thrill-seek horror spoofs, it's the evocation of some concordant alter-reality of murder and mayhem trade-offs. There is a sequence when Grace is about to be caught, but, like a tragic figure in a patriarchal fable, Toni(Henry Czerny) falls off the purpose and his bloated body lands flat in disarray. There are other examples, as when a letch flings himself off of a piece of imposing furniture. Each hunter gets revved by a sighting of Grace, and then brings a new surprise to the audience in a thought or explanation.

Yes, it is over the top ridiculous, that's the point. It's on purpose. So reviews that call in unbelievable and unrealistic, ya think?

I saw some other reviews that didn't like it because of "lack of direction" being neither comedy or horror. Again, to me that's the point. You get blood and gore and scares, along with dark, sarcastic humor. That's my thing so it's a win-win. If you want straight horror or straight comedy, this won't be your thing. However, I will admit that I thought it would be funnier? I chalk that up to a lot of the humor was already in the preview. I was expecting to like it more, but when you've already used many of the jokes in the preview....the movie isn't as good. The 1 star off is because of that.

One reason I wanted to see this was because I read about the actress saying she didn't want to be a stupid screaming heroine and wanted to play a role that was believably actually making choices to stay alive (even if the premise is silly and not believable). The heroine did make some choices that didn't seem to be the best idea such as giving herself away with noise or leaving evidence of where she was or had been. I'd expect her to try and be sneakier. But she also made some good practical decisions like losing the heels, ripping off the trip-inducing dress, bandaging herself, trying to arm herself, etc. So it was mixed and when you're being hunted and full of adrenaline, maybe you don't always make perfect choices?

The preview gave away more than is ideal, so I'd recommend avoiding that, but if you're reading this you probably already watched it. Not the best movie ever, but I can see myself rewatching it. Overall, I thought the pacing was perfect, and that it was over the top in a fun, ridiculous way. :)
