Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 vs 8 Gen 2

Back in June, reliable tipster Digital Chat Station claimed that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 (SD8550) will come in a 1+2+2+3 CPU configuration, comprising one Cortex-X3, two Cortex-A720, two Cortex-A710, and three Cortex-A510 cores. But new information that's surfaced online reveals different specs.

This revelation comes from another reliable tipster Ice universe, who said the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will come with two Cortex-A715 cores instead of Cortex-A720. The Cortex-X3 will have a maximum clock speed of 3.2GHz, whereas the Cortex-A510 will go up to 2GHz. The Cortex-A715 and Cortex-A710 cores will be clocked at up to 2.8GHz.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 vs 8 Gen 2

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is rumored to use an Adreno 740 GPU to handle graphically intensive tasks such as gaming and video editing, but we don't have much information about that yet.

We've also heard rumors of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 having an ultra-high frequency variant, whose prime core will be clocked at 3.4-3.5 GHz.

There's no word from Qualcomm about the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 yet, but the American chip company is hosting the Snapdragon Summit between November 15-17 in Hawaii where it will likely introduce the flagship chip.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has been confirmed for a mid-November debut and will go up against Apple's A16 Bionic and MediaTek's potential Dimensity 9100. According to a new leak from China, however, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 could focus on efficiency, likely at the expense of raw performance.

Qualcomm will unveil its next flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, in November. Much has been said about the potential performance capabilities of the next-gen flagship SoC, and a new leak now claims the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1's successor will be focused on efficiency.

According to word on the grapevine, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will be designed by the same team behind the Snapdragon 835. Supposedly, the focus this time out will be on efficiency, perhaps at the expense of raw performance. Back in 2016 when the Snapdragon 835 was launched, it was widely regarded as being about 25% more efficient than the Snapdragon 820, mostly thanks to a switch from a 14 nm node to a 10 nm one.

That doesn't sound particularly impressive, though, especially as the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 managed to claw out a promised 30% improved efficiency versus the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 simply down to a move to TSMC's process. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, as with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and likely the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, will be built by TSMC, and it'll be interesting to see how Qualcomm manages to deliver significant efficiency improvements without a qualitative leap in nodes.

The MediaTek Dimensity 9200 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 are coming. The two next-gen flagship chipsets will debut this month, and new leaks have now revealed core configuration details and early GPU performance numbers that outperform Apple's A16 Bionic.

The MediaTek Dimensity 9200 has been officially confirmed to debut on November 8, with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 to follow about a week later. Both chipsets will represent the very best Android has to offer, and new leaks seem to indicate they could edge the A16 Bionic in some aspects, too.

As revealed by multiple sources, it appears the Dimensity 9200 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will outperform the A16 Bionic in the GPU department. Citing the 1080p Manhattan 3.1 Offscreen test, both SoCs do better than the iPhone 14 Pro Max's A16 Bionic. According to Digital Chat Station, the Snapdragon 8 Gen and its Adreno 740 score 217 FPS in that test, while the A16 Bionic comes in at 195 FPS. MediaTek looks set to finally catch up to its peers GPU-wise, as the new Mali-G715 Immortalis MC11 on the Dimensity 9200 rockets it straight to a score of 228 FPS.

While clock speeds of the two chipsets remain unconfirmed, leaks currently indicate that the Dimensity 9200 will feature one Cortex-X3 core clocked at 3.05 GHz, three Cortex-A715 cores at 2.85 GHz, and four Cortex-A510 cores clocked at 2.0 GHz. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 looks to feature one Cortex-X3 core clocked at 3.35 GHz, two Cortex-A715 cores clocked at 2.80 GHz, two Cortex-A710 cores at 2.80 GHz, and three Cortex-A510 cores running at 2.0 GHz.
