Issue/Question

  • When launching Pro Tools on macOS the user receives one or more of the following errors:
    • "Could not create a new document because Assertion in "/Volumes/Development..." - there are many variations on this error, but they all begin in this manner
    • "Could not create the TCE plug-in's factory default file because the plug-in doesn't support the current sample rate."
    • "The current playback engine does not support a sample rate of 0 kHz."
  • After clicking through the errors, Pro Tools automatically closes.

Environment

  • macOS
  • Pro Tools

Cause

Pro Tools "Playback Engine" setting is set to "Pro Tools Aggregate I/O" and is unable to launch with these settings.

Resolution

Method 1

  1. While holding down the "N" key, launch Pro Tools.
    • This will prompt the Playback Engine settings screen to come up.
  2. At the top of the open settings window there will be a drop down menu for selecting the "Playback Engine."
  • If the dropdown is not already set to "Built-in Output", click on the dropdown and select "Built-in Output". The Playback Engine settings should look as below:
The current playback engine does not support a sample rate of 48 kHz
  1. Click "OK" and Pro Tools should finish launching correctly.

The current playback engine does not support a sample rate of 48 kHz

I have a session I need to mix, which was apparently recorded at 44.1kHz, because I get this message when I try to open it.

I'm running Pro Tools 12 on a custom-built PC running Windows 10, and I'm not using an interface, just the onboard sound on the motherboard.

What could be causing this? How could I fix it?

The current playback engine does not support a sample rate of 48 kHz

level 1

the error can occur if windows is also using your onboard soundcard, do you get the error with other sessions? try holding the "N" key when you start pro tools, this will open playback engine settings before pro tools can give you the error, where you can reset them.

level 2

I get this error whenever opening a session at 44.1. It never happens with a 48kHz session. I'm fairly sure Windows isn't also using my soundcard, because no Windows audio plays when Pro Tools is open; when PT is open it takes exclusive control of the audio device.

I tried holding 'N', but it doesn't help because I have no other option for a playback engine.

level 1

It sounds like your selected playback device needs to be manually switched to 44.1k. You say you are using the onboard soundcard, try to go the control panel/sound and find the soundcard properties. sometimes there is an advanced tab that lets you switch between 44.1/48. If you can switch it over to 44.1 it should let you open the session.

I have the same issue with a USB mic at work, when the sales/marketing team wants to do simple voice overs over music beds. When they come in at 48k I have to switch the windows settings over manually.

level 2

That worked, but the song is slower, as though the sample rates of the audio files don't match that of the session.

I'll have to talk to the recording engineer to work out what happened.

right click on the volume icon near the clock. choose playback devices and disable the soundcard under playback and recording.

an easy fix for this, is to always import session data instead of opening a project. from there you can convert everything to whatever sample / bit rate you want.

level 1

It sounds like your sound card has a fixed sample rate. When Pro Tools opens, it will attempt to change the sample rate of the hardware to whatever the session calls for, and if it can't you get that dialog. Easiest solution is probably to get them to upsample the session to 48k and try again.

Had a similar issue. Setting the sound card as "standard communication device" via right click fixed it for some reason.

How do I fix the current playback engine does not support a sample rate of 44.1 kHz?

Manually switch the Clock Source to "Internal" in the Hardware Setup window. Or, exit Pro Tools, set the external clock source to the correct sample rate, and then reopen the session.

How do you change kHz on Pro Tools?

Step 3: Select the sample rate drop-down menu by clicking on the drop-down tab and choose your sample rate from the set of options available. You will be able to choose from 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4, or 192 kHz sample rates. If you're working on a music or podcast project, 44.1 kHz should work fine.

How do I fix sample rate in Pro Tools?

Change the sample rate in Pro Tools Navigate to File, select Save As, then choose a name and location for your project. Close out of that project, then create a new one at the desired sample rate. With the new project open, navigate to File, select Import, then choose Import Session Data.
