Series Info

In 2022, a cataclysm strikes Earth, seemingly wiping out the population save for former family man and bank employee Phil Miller. Sad and very lonely, Phil travels the United States, Canada and Mexico in his RV searching for other survivors. Striving to hold onto hope that there is at least one other living person, he tries to make the best of circumstances until his path finally crosses with that hoped-for other survivor -- and all becomes more comforting that the person happens to be a woman. As more survivors turn up, complications arise and Phil finds it difficult to co-exist with others again.

you may laugh so hard you accidentally spit your drink out of your mouth

I am pretty sure the funny/annoying experience I had watching this entire series this weekend was exactly what Forte intended. This is not a post apocalyptic survival thriller. It is a Will Forte-style comedy of insanity and I loved it. Yes - he annoyed the crap out of me..that was intentional. He also made me laugh so hard at times after saying to myself "I can't believe he is going to do that". And then he'd do it...the insane/pathological lies that make up the character of Phil Miller, the awkward tension he created in this series is brilliant. I've watch him since his start years ago and this is by far his best work. If you don't like his "annoying guy" humor you'll hate this. If you want a zombie fueled last shoot out this is not for you. (spoiler alert) If you want an insightful inward look at the how a small group of survivors battle through the trials of living post "end of time" this is not for you. If you do want to see the most annoying character Will Forte has ever played who constantly says and does things to completely piss off everyone around him...with the backdrop of a end of the world scenario...you may laugh so hard you accidentally spit your drink out of your mouth on the monitor.

I was immediately interested since one of my favorite books is the classic "Earth Abides"

Verified purchase

When I saw the title for this show, I was immediately interested since one of my favorite books is the classic "Earth Abides"; however, the promos for the at-the-time yet-to-premier show made me skeptical as to whether it would be worth watching because the main character Phil Miller is sooooo disgusting to me: his drunkenness, slothfulness, destructiveness, slobbiness, et al, but I vowed to watch the first episode to give it a fair shot only because of my love for "Earth Abides".

After having watched almost all of the first show, I had firmly decided that I'd never watch it again. The Phil Miller character was just too vile and reminded me of a stereotypical Obamatard. I thought, "If this is all this show is going to be is nothing but Phil Miller going around destroying things, getting drunk and crapping in a swimming pool, it can be that without me." Then Phil found Carol (Kristen Schaal). Schaall's character is the diamond found within a mound of manure. She's is brilliantly played by Schaall and the way she and Bill Forte play-off each other is a pure delight to watch. My initial "firm" verdict was immediately reversed and upon watching the 2nd episode, I was really glad I did.

Worth the watch.

I think people either love this or hate it. I love it because Kristen Schaal is just one of the most endearing goofballs on this planet. I smile and chuckle even if she is just standing there. I like how there is no time spent going on and on about WHY there is no one left on the planet. They just proceed and show that humans don't change much despite the circumstances. I feel like its one of those shows that you grow to appreciate the more you watch it and little scenes pop back into your mind a day or two later. The nuances are what make it - the facial expressions, the dialog spoken in relation to the situations, its not a show to just have on in the background. When I first saw the ads I vowed not to watch it because I was like "Its just going to be 30 minutes of Tom Hanks Cast Away every week" and then they actually make fun of Cast Away in the first episode so I kept watching to see what other surprised would come up. There are plenty as of episode 5.

its enjoyable if you like feeling uncomfortable

this is a curious show. its enjoyable if you like feeling uncomfortable. and they do their best. meanwhile, there is some interesting character development, so its not all pratfalls and strange references. Will Forte carries the show beautifully and Kristen Schaal is an amazing foil. not sure if this became popular on television, but having watched it all in a few days after the end of the season, i very much enjoyed it. not sure i put it on the level where i would buy a season pass for the next season (like i did after bing-watching Brooklyn 99) but its not something i will altogether ignore.

the took the story about to it's limit but it was renewed for a second season. it seems like the kind of show where they might simply kill off all the unimportant characters and start over with out much ado. it would be pretty radical and fairly brave for network television.

but we'll see what actually happens.

Based on first episiode

Verified purchase

Not bad. I've only seen the first episode so far - twice. I watched it first on network TV and then again the next day here on Amazon instant video. Sort of didn't like it the first viewing, but warned up to it on the second. I think it has potential.

I think what I had a problem with at first is I was expecting the sort of character that most end-of-the-world storyline usually features - someone who makes survival look easy. But instead you get someone who has no practical skills or knowledge in such things. He's just a normal 'everyman'. Same with the woman that he hooks up with. I kept thinking how I would do things differently in their situation. On second viewing I started seeing the humor of the characters.

I believe enough in the premise that I went ahead and purchased the season pass for the series. Hopefully I won't be disappointed.

It's okay. It's different than the previews led you to believe.

Verified purchase

The show isn't really about being the last man on Earth. Though that is the setting and a major plot device, the show is about how men and women are different and how we interact.

It's funny in that regard. The show highlights the quirks of both men and women. (The man is a slob who lives a very utilitarian lifestyle. The woman is intent on making everything nicer and livable again. You get the idea.) Their desires don't match up and comedy hijinx ensues.

After the first 2 episodes it's just okay. It's worth a 3rd episode to see where the show runners take it. The first 2 episodes were totally exposition and may not be representative of the true nature of the show yet.

After 4 episodes...it's getting funnier. The plot keeps being altered to keep is fresh. I added a 4th star to my review

An excellent show

Verified purchase

I felt this first season of The Last Man on Earth was excellent. I almost wish that Tandy hadn't had a fall and redemption arc throughout this season as his trying to get away with all his selfish schemes was part of what made this season shine, but I understand why the writers took the story the way they did. This season is still perfect as it is, but I think the later seasons suffer a little bit because of some of the choices made in this first season (as good as those later seasons are).

Refreshing plot in an age of Reality TV!

Verified purchase

Refreshing humor with a twist! I missed this show until a friend quoted something from the show so I rented the entire season and watched it over three days. Great idea for a plot and very good cast choices to play these various characters. You find yourself saying out loud, "Oh, no, don't do that you idiot!" You just have to go with the plot and not question some obvious "factual errors" they just gloss over, but hey, go with it and you'll really enjoy yourself! The first several episodes are side splitting but by the time you get to episode 10, you wonder how long it can continue along the same line (on how much a dbag Phil is) and how much worse he can get before something happens. Then along comes the last two episodes of season one and with the very last scene, you know that big changes are occurring and new cast members (who are hilarious in their own right) will be part of it. Can't wait until September 27, 2015!
