Safety guidelines regarding COVID-19 continue to evolve. While proof of vaccination and mask-wearing are no longer required in Philadelphia, individual businesses in Philadelphia and the Countryside may require them, and the City of Philadelphia strongly recommends mask-wearing in indoor public spaces. Advance tickets or reservations remain recommended or necessary at many spots. Your best bet: Check online or call ahead. Does it feel like it’s been four score and seven days since your last vacation? Presidents Day weekend (February 19-21, 2022) offers the perfect opportunity to shake off that vacation rust and enjoy a nice, long getaway. And we cannot tell a lie — there’s no better place to fete the occasion than Philadelphia, the city where our Founding Fathers and many of our presidents pondered the future of our nation. To celebrate the holiday (which officially falls on Monday, February 21, 2022), a handful of the region’s historical institutions and museums host events and programming (both in-person and virtual) to teach guests about the role of the president and honor those who held the office. In addition to Presidents Day-specific programming, there are a ton of other great things happening in Greater Philadelphia over the long weekend. Visitors can partake in Black History Month celebrations throughout the city, experience the opening of Harry Potter: The Exhibition at The Franklin Institute, wander through the beautiful Winter Wonder display at Longwood Gardens and step back in time to ancient China with the Shen Yun dance company at Merriam Theater. A Monday holiday means an extra day to enjoy the weekend, so why not stay overnight? Did you know Philadelphia served as the nation’s capital from 1790 to 1800 — and was home to two U.S. presidents? See where Presidents George Washington and John Adams lived for parts of their presidencies by visiting The President’s House, which was also home to at least nine enslaved people during Washington’s term. Nearby Independence Hall later served as the setting for important speeches by Presidents Gerald R. Ford, Ronald Regan and John F. Kennedy. The National Constitution Center has been a favorite visiting spot for modern presidents and was the setting for a presidential debate and an important address on race by President Barack Obama in 2008. The winter wonderland offers guests a chance to go skating at the city’s largest outdoor ice rink, cozy up at one of the warming cabins and fire-pit stations (plus, s’mores kits!), and gaze at the twinkling lights and holiday tree — all while overlooking the Delaware River. Special technology allows visitors to see and interact with the 34 frescoes up close, while on-site signage and optional audio tours provide insights about this world treasure. In the Conservatory, Streptocarpus, Saintpaulia and Clerodendrum schmidtii fill up the space in purple and white while hundreds of orchids bloom magnificently.
