Toyota Sequoia vs Lexus LX Reddit

Depends on your usage. I have a 18 Sequoia, plenty of room, third row is big enough for adults. I've towed trailers with ease and have put on 60k miles in a year. Only oil changes and other routine maintenance. Projected me in an accident with a driver who ran the red light. Was repaired 100%(over 24k damages her insurance paid for) and driven 5k miles since, still no issues. I looked at a lx470 and the space wasn't a good. However, like said earlier, it does have a truck like feel. I've driven trucks my entire life and its what I want.

If you want a do everything vehicle that will have most of what you want, get the Sequoia.

If you want that plus some luxury touches get the Lexus.

Especially bad considering they aren’t offering an extended wheelbase version

Oh, they aren't now? Last I heard, they were "considering" it. The previous Sequoias were one-length-only because they sort of split the difference between the SWB and LWB models from Ford and GM, but those short models pretty much match the new Sequoia. So it seems like the next logical step.

Then again, look how long it took for Toyota to start making a longer CrewMax/6.5' Tundra--8 years after GM and Ram, and 16 years after Ford.

I cross-shopped 2018 Sequoia Platinums (highest trim) with 200 Series Land Cruisers for a month. Sequoias are nowhere near as luxurious as Land Cruisers.

The Sequoia switchgear for HVAC, the center screen, the door trim material, the center console material, the gauge cluster, the leather quality, the rear HVAC controls, etc all feel like typical Toyota parts. For $70k MSRP on a new Sequoia Platinum, that’s really not acceptable in my opinion. Nothing really wrong with that. It just doesn’t sit right with me as a value proposition. All of those parts (maybe except the turn signal switchgear straight outta my 2002 Camry) on the Land Cruiser feel much more premium and soft.

Also, the sound deadening and thickness of the Sequoia glass aren’t the same as the LC.

While this isn’t about the luxury aspect, I’ll throw it out there too. Yes, both have a 5.7L V8, but their construction isn’t equal. First, LC’s V8 block is made from bottom to top to reduce the chance of bubbling. Sequoia is top to bottom like most other engines. Each LC V8 is put through an MRI to check for bubbling. Find bubbling? Then they toss that engine block and make it till it’s done right.

I drove the Sequoia and LC a ton, sat in multiple for a long time, and performed endless research. I also grew up in a 2008 Sequoia Limited trim lol. The Sequoia is the better, more spacious people hauler for sure, but it’s nowhere near as luxurious as the LC.

Edit: I just saw your comment about the old vs new LC vs Sequoia. I think now it’s hard to argue the superiority of one over another, having looked at photos of both interiors and knowing the just-refreshed Sequoia is built on the same TNGA architecture as the 300 Series.

No, not nearly as over engineered to the level of the Land Cruisers.

I think that is what the question is - cause now the Sequoia and the LandCruiser are sharing a platform. Share engines, share transmissions - there has always been an element of sharing, but it is more and more.

So you'd presume that they're both similarly 'overengineered'.

Personally no though...

But I can get the question.

The Land Cruiser is built better. The Cruiser came standard with creature comforts that were only in the highest trim levels of Sequoia. The Cruiser is better off-road. It's a more prestigious name plate, so it might fit in better down at the Polo Grounds or the country club, if that's your scene.

The Sequoia gets better mileage. It's bigger on the inside with more head room, more cargo space, more hip room. It's lighter. It's cheaper to buy all other things being equal.

Both are good vehicles. The Land Cruiser is Toyota's flagship product, and as such it is built in their best factory by their best workers to quality standards that rival those of Lexus. Quite simply, it's the best designed, best engineered and best built vehicle in the world. The Sequoia is still an excellent vehicle. I'd still choose it over any U.S.-market full-size SUV from any other manufacturer.

I just wouldn't choose it over a Land Cruiser. But you might, and there's nothing wrong with that. You'd get better mileage and more interior space, and you'd still have a vehicle that is higher quality than any of its contemporaries from any other manufacturer.

Better in what way? The two are so similar in every aspect it really comes down to preference.

Back in 2018, I cross-shopped 2018 Land Cruiser and 2013-15 LX570. I didn’t want 2016+ LX because they are ugly AF. I chose Land Cruiser because I liked the steering feel better. It may be related to KDSS and smaller wheel/ taller tires on Land Cruiser.

LX is def more luxurious inside. Some may want the Lexus badge, some may like AHC ride better, and some may even think LX is gorgeous. Therefore they buy LX.

I’m in US and want a 300 series so bad, but I’m not buying a LX. I’ll have to drive the Sequoia to see if there’s similar build quality and steering input. Or I could always buy a LX and swap out the front and rear end. I’m sure someone will do it.
