What color does ginger hair fade to?

  • If you permanently dyed your hair light or fire red, when the color fades your hair will look orange.
  • However, if you have used a permanent dark or intense red dye, when these fade your hair will look brown.

Red tones are gorgeous and put your unique personality on display. That’s a great reason to go for it, right?

But these red tones also have a downside: they’re pretty difficult to maintain.

Since they have so much pigmentation, they’re tones that quickly disappear. Every time you wash your hair, that beautiful color will inevitably come out little by little.

This will also depend a lot on the type of dye you use.

Red tones come in two types of dye: permanent or semi-permanent.

  • If you choose a permanent dye, it lasts about 3 to 4 weeks.
  • If you choose a semi-permanent dye, it lasts last about 2 to 3 weeks.

After this time, you should re-dye your hair, and I’m not just talking about the roots – all of it!

We now know what color your red hair will have if it fades. But we still have a lot more we need to talk about!

What color does red hair turn when it fades?

What color does ginger hair fade to?

We already know from the beginning that lighter red colors – like the Little Mermaid color, as professionals sometimes call it – will become orange, just as darker reds like a wine color become brown.

But also faded red colors will become dull and lifeless.

That’s why we have to take such care in maintaining them.

However, how you maintain your color really depends on what kind of dye you used.

  • The key for permanent colors is just re-dying your hair after 3 or 4 weeks.

Even before that, you’ll see your color changing at about 2 weeks.

  • Remember, if you used semi-permanent dye, you should re-dye it after 2 to 3 weeks if you still want to keep it.

With semi-permanent dye, you’ll probably start to see a change even in the same week you dye it.

Why is that?

Semi-permanent dyes don’t contain ammonia or peroxide. These are key for the dye to penetrate all of your hair, not just the surface. Since semi-permanent dyes don’t have this, they won’t last as long as permanent dyes.

That’s why after some time passes, depending on what tone you used, your hair will change to orange or brown.

2 essential products that you need to use to maintain your red hair

What color does ginger hair fade to?

  • To maintain your color for more time, you need to use red color depositing shampoo.

Color depositing shampoo contains dye. That way, every time you wash your hair with this shampoo, you’re adding color to your red hair.

That way it’ll stay bright for longer.

All you have to do is replace your regular shampoo with a color depositing shampoo and you’ll see the results.

  • One more key tip is asking your hair salon for a red hair color mask.

What’s that, you ask?

Color masks are like hydrating masks. They also re-hydrate your hair, but in this case, they add pigmentation, too. Obviously, to stay a redhead you need a red color mask.

It’s super easy to use:

  • After washing your hair with color depositing shampoo, apply the mask from the roots to the ends of your hair.
  • Leave it on for 20 minutes to do its magic.
  • Once the 20 minutes are up, rinse your hair with warm water and you’re ready to go.

Your color will be renewed, and your hair will have the added benefit of being stronger and healthier. It’s something you can do once a week.

This is a great way to put more time on the clock before you have to re-dye your hair, both for permanent and semi-permanent dyes.

What color should I use to re-dye my hair when the red dye starts to fade?

Okay, now it’s time to renew the red.

Whether you used permanent or semi-permanent dye, if you decided you still want to be a redhead, you don’t need to do any kind of preparation.

You just need to choose the red dye kit you’d like to use next.

There’s no problem if it’s a different color of red; whether lighter or darker, as long as it’s red it’s fine!

  • But as I mentioned before, if you decide that being a redhead is no longer in your future, everything changes./su_list]

The red will become your enemy.

As you’ll come to find, red and black are the two dyes with the most pigmentation.

If you or someone else in your life has already had red hair, you’ve probably been told that red always comes back.

And it’s true!

No matter what color dye you apply over the red one, after washing your hair a few times, you’ll see the red peek through again.

This is because of how much pigmentation it has, as I mentioned earlier.

So then, how can I change my color?

  • Unfortunately, you have to bleach your hair.

Depending on the tone of red your applied, it will take about 2 to 3 bleaching sessions.

Bleaching is a chemical process that damages your hair, since it breaks the hair fiber to expel any color inside.

Here, I suggest as a hair color professional that you go to a salon to do the whole procedure of getting rid of the red color and choosing a different tone.

Why?

Because if you don’t bleach your hair the right way, your hair can end up a mess of yellow, orange, and red parts.

Unless you’re looking to join a punk rock band, maybe it’s not a good look for you.

Bleaching red hair really does require previous experience.

If you think you have that experience, go for it. If not, get the help of a professional.

  • Bleaching out red tones requires 30 volume peroxide, as well as ammonia, which – just like it sounds like it would – damages your hair.

It can even burn or cut your hair.

So, please, do yourself a favor and go to a salon so your hair will keep looking fabulous and damage-free.

What colour does ginger fade to?

When red hair follicles stop producing their gingerish pigment, the colour fades from red through a glorious spectrum of faded copper to rosy-blonde colours, through to silvery-white. It's a sight to be seen, giving an almost autumnal effect as your red hair moves into its 'silver fox' phase.

Can ginger hair fade to brown?

As aging occurs, the body starts to produce more eumelanin which leads to hair darkening. The darkening in combination with the natural fading of hair caused by age leads to redheads having a more dull color later in life. Fading can be combated with color depositing shampoos, hair glazes, and hair glosses.

Do redheads go gray or white?

Both characteristics come from recessive genes, which like to come in pairs. Redheads probably won't go grey. That's because the pigment just fades over time. So they will probably go blonde and even white, but not grey.

Does ginger hair hold color?

Staying true to its stubborn stereotype, ginger hair retains its natural pigment a lot longer than other shades. So there's no need to panic about going grey - red hair simply fades with age through a glorious spectrum of faded copper to rosy-blonde colours, then to silvery-white.
