General information[]

FP is a numerical stat that represents the amount of points that allows the player to cast spells or perform weapon skills. It is depicted on screen as a blue bar between the player's HP and Stamina bars.

The amount of FP that a player has available is determined by their Attunement.

A determined amount of FP is depleted each time the player casts either a sorcery, a pyromancy, a miracle, or activates a weapon skill. When the player's FP reserves are insufficient to cast the required amount for one of the aforementioned abilities, the casting will not take effect.

Items that regenerate FP[]

  • Ashen Estus Flask
  • Hidden Blessing
  • Simple Gem infusion on weapons
  • Executioner's Greatsword
  • Handmaid's Dagger
  • Aldrich's Sapphire

Items that affect FP usage[]

  • Farron Ring
  • Dusk Crown Ring

Notes[]

  • With the patch 1.08, the player could still activate weapon skills even if there are little FP left. However, it does not apply to any kind of magic.

What does FP mean in dark Souls 3

FP is your Focus Points. Think of it like a "Mana" bar. When initiating a weapon art or casting spells, you use your FP. It increases by Attunement.

I love DS3, but personally I found the FP change to be infuriating at times.

Using magic/faith builds feels like such a soul level sink, because you have to invest so much points into attunement. that or you have to cut your health pool down in order to have extra ashen estus.

Along with that you then clutter your own character's UI by having to switch to ashen estus then back to regular estus becomes hard to manage. Along with this it discourages mixed builds, because special stance moves also use up FP, a resource you desperately need to for all your other magic moves

In comparison, melee builds are just so much more intuitive. You only really have to have estus in the bottom slot. You don't have a limited ammo pool and can swing away to your hearts content.

It's like the game really wants you to be a melee Quality build more than anything else.

Does anyone else prefer the Dark Souls 1 way of handling it? Where pyromancy didn't require a special stat, and spells instead had intrinsic limited uses, that weren't effected by your melee weapon's moveset.

Edit:

Would a significantly slow regenerating FP bar similar to how stamina works, with no ashen estus or at least significantly less ashen estus, be a good replacement?

A lot of people have brought up that FP allows a better range of spell use (mainly being that people could spam a particular spell past it's typical DS1 limit if they wanted to and it's all tied to one FP stat rather than being intrinsic to the item)

What does FP do in Dark Souls?

FP is a numerical stat that represents the amount of points that allows the player to cast spells or perform weapon skills. It is depicted on screen as a blue bar between the player's HP and Stamina bars. The amount of FP that a player has available is determined by their Attunement.

What stat controls FP?

Vigor is your health (HP) stat. Attribute that determines FP.

What determines FP?

Function points measure the size of an application system based on the functional view of the system. The size is determined by counting the number of inputs, outputs, queries, internal files and external files in the system and adjusting that total for the functional complexity of the system.

How do you level up FP?

There are only really 4 ways to increase your FP and not all of them are permanent. You can level up your Mind attribute, use FP-boosting Talismans, find specific Crystal Tears for your Physick, or use items that decrease FP usage. Every one of these is very important, especially if you have a Mage build.
