What does mint Choco taste like?

Now, I know it’s been months, but a while back, Twitter had the “mint chocolate chip ice cream” debate.

I want to stand by my opinion today and say it’s one of the best ice cream flavors out there. Of course, I like a variety of flavors, but nothing does it better than mint chocolate chip.

Mint chocolate chip is truly the superior flavor (and I would highlight and bold that if I could). That being said, I understand that some people can’t even consume mint chocolate chip ice cream without getting an upset stomach — a valid reason to not like it —  and it’s totally fine by me.

For the people who say it tastes like “toothpaste,” you have clearly never had decent mint chocolate chip ice cream before. Seriously, what kind of mint chocolate chip ice cream are you eating? Whatever it is, I can only pray that it is discontinued. However, when it comes to good mint chocolate ice cream brands, Breyer’s and Dreyer’s are the best. Both brands are very creamy, and the mint flavor isn’t strong.

Now, if I were eating mint ice cream with no chocolate chips, I think there would be a problem with that. Most mint-flavored items don’t sit well with me. I’m not saying that I would eat an entire pint of mint chocolate chip by myself because that’s overkill. My point is, I am saying that it’s a very good flavor and does not deserve the slander it gets —especially for no reason.

Sure, mint chocolate chip may not be the most versatile flavor compared to other flavors like vanilla and chocolate, but I personally believe it’s a rather elegantone. It’s meant to be good on its own, instead of being served with other ice cream flavors. Additionally, the ice cream can make for some extra flavor on other desserts, such as a scoop of mint chip on a brownie.

I may not have empirically valid reasons on why mint chocolate chip ice cream is a good flavor; I just like the way it tastes. Plus, it played a big part of my life in my childhood because my parents never wanted to let me eat super “sweet” ice cream flavors like chocolate or cookies and cream. At the end of the day, you can like any kind of ice cream flavor (without harming people over ice cream, of course) and it’s totally fine… but I’ll have my mint chip.

Everyone has a favorite ice cream flavor, whether it's strawberry, vanilla, chocolate, or something more creative with plenty of fudge ribbons and mix-ins. One of my favorite ice cream flavors is mint chocolate chip. The indulgent treat is always refreshingly cool after warm afternoons spent in the sun, and in the wintertime, it's perfect with a few Christmas cookies on the side.

When it comes to mint chocolate chip ice cream, not all are created equal. First off, there's the issue of should mint chocolate chip ice cream be white or green? I'm definitely team green, even though the color doesn't add any extra flavor to the ice cream. Then there's the fact that the ice cream should have discernible chunks of chocolate versus little shavings. With all of this in mind I set out to find the best mint chocolate chip ice cream on the market and this is what I discovered.

Worst: The Fresh Market Mint Chocolate Chip Old Fashioned Ice Cream

The worst mint chocolate chip ice cream I tested was The Fresh Market brand ice cream. When I opened the package I was slightly disappointed that the ice cream was white, but when I took a spoonful I was more disappointed. While the quart did have a lot of chocolate chips in it, the texture was very grainy and sand-like, which made this the worst ice cream I tried.

Talenti Mediterranean Mint Gelato

One of my favorite brands of ice cream is Talenti, with its perfectly creamy gelato that can be eaten by the pint. While I've never been let down by a pint of Talenti when I tried the Mediterranean Mint flavor I can say it wasn't one of my favorites. The actual ice cream was a deep green color, which was slightly off-putting. There were plenty of bittersweet chocolate chunks that helped to counter how sweet the base was, but the base also lacked a strong mint flavor. The ice cream was smooth and creamy, without any grittiness, so this might be a good option if you're looking for a more subtle mint taste.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

Blue Bunny Mint Chocolate Chip

Blue Bunny isn't a brand I normally have in my freezer, but it was decent. The light green color made me want to dive into the ice cream container. The ice cream was super creamy and had a nice mix of chocolate chunks and shavings. The mint flavor was fairly strong but felt a little fake after eating more than a few bites. I'd use this for birthday parties or family get-togethers where I'm trying to feed a crowd.

Rebel Ice Cream Mint Chip

Rebel Ice Cream is known for being a diet-friendly ice cream, but the mint chocolate chip feels way more indulgent than the other "diet" brands. The white ice cream had large chunks of chocolate throughout the pint, and it had a subtle mint flavor that just danced across your palette without overwhelming it. The ice cream was a little gritty, but I can overlook that if it's okay to eat the entire pint without blowing a diet.

Graeter's Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream

One of the surprise brands of this taste test was Graeter's. The white ice cream has plenty of dark chocolate chips mixed into the base, which helps to balance the flavor so it's not too sweet. The mint flavor is fairly strong without being overwhelming or fake tasting. The creamy texture set the entire bowl off to make for one delicious bite.

When it was time to try the Homemade Brand Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream I was excited to find that the base of the ice cream was that lovely mint green color I had been looking for. There were big chunks of chocolate chips throughout the ice cream, so every bite had some chocolate to go with the incredibly smooth mint ice cream.

Is there anything better than busting out a pint of Häagen-Dazs ice cream and sitting down in front of the TV on a Friday night? I don't think so. One of my favorite flavors from the iconic brand is the mint chip ice cream. While the ice cream is white, the flavor is what really matters here. The mint flavor is light and fresh, and tastes like a perfect mint candy. There are an ample amount of chocolate chunks that ensure each bite gets the perfect ratio of ice cream to chocolate. Don't be surprised if you sit down with a pint and in minutes it's gone.

The surprise ice cream of the bunch is the Great Value Mint Chip Ice Cream from Walmart. The green ice cream tasted exactly like those iconic mint-chocolate candies named after a mountain range. The base was incredibly smooth and creamy without a hint of grittiness. The large chocolate chunks kept making me want to dive in for another bite. The only bad thing about this ice cream was that I had to share it with my family.
