What does the IRS code 846 mean?

There are lots of people in the United States right now who are awaiting their tax return, with it being the responsibility of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to send these out.

In order to try and figure out when you might get your tax refund, one common method is to decipher the day through your transcript cycle code.

What is my transcript cycle code?

If you have a tax transcript cycle code, this means that your return has successfully made its way onto the IRS master file (IMF), which in turn typically means that your filed tax return is currently being processed by the IRS.

In order to figure out your return or refund status, though, the cycle code and tax topic code need to be put together, but these alter during the IRS processing cycle.

Should you see the 846 code on your transcript, this means that the IRS has processed your return and that your estimated direct deposit date has been figured out.

The IRS tend to update returns in cycles, so your IRS cycle code can inform you which batch you are in and when your transcript tax return information is updated, whether this is on a daily or weekly basis.

What is the processing date?

You are able to see your cycle date via the free official IRS transcript, with this being an eight-digit number that follows the format of year-week of year-day of week. Therefore, it will look something like 20220602.

The first four digits indicates the tax processing year, so this would be 2022.

The fifth and sixth digits are the week of the year, so in this example the '06' would mean it is the sixth calendar week of the year.

Then, the seventh and eighth digits are the day of the week for your IRS Account and when it is uploaded to the IRS master file.

The IRS weekly processing begins on a Friday, so 01 = Friday, 02=Monday, 03 = Tuesday, 04 = Wednesday and 05 is Thursday is generally reserved for weekly processing.

What does the IRS code 846 mean?

This is my first time checking my transcripts and they updated for me on Friday with the 846 code for 02-24-2021. I usually would see pending in my bank account but I don’t as of yet. Is the 846 code a guarantee deposit? Filed 2/06, Accepted 2/12, 846 code 2/19, WMR still on received.

I’ve trusted the code for damn near five years. It’s always been spot on with when my DD goes into my bank account. Remember the WMR tool does not update as fast as you would hope. Plenty of times I got my DD but the tool was still showing received. It eventually updated three days after the fact.

Why people are freaking out over it this year is insane. The piece of crap tool has never been accurate 😂

level 1

I did a bit of research and noticed that on my old transcripts , the date of the 846 code for refund issued matches the date I got my refund in my bank. For the past year and also the stimuluschecks . So I think you should get it that day. Take it with a grain of salt cause i see the same thing you don

level 2

Ok that makes sense and Will do! Fingers crossed 🤞

846 Codes are extremely accurate. Trust the code lol. It’s your best friend during tax refund time. As long as your account info for your direct deposit is accurate ..( numbers were entered correctly, the account isn’t closed, you don’t owe anyone who could get your refund garnished, etc etc) there should be no delays.

I have 2 different 846 codes that are different a amounts but the both add up to my total refund, what’s that mean? Where can I find my final refund amount?

level 2

Did you have any Missing stimulus to claim? That could be the reason why it’s broken up but as long as there is a 846 with a DDD you’ll be getting both payments

2019 - Filed with TT. Have 2018 IRS Transcript with 846 - Refund Issued 2/13/2019, yet no update on WMR as of 2/8/19... Not sure what is going on last year requested DD and all info correct & received chk in mail.

Is anyone familiar with why the Transcript is updated with code "846" for 2018 Tax Year, and yet WMR still shows "Received"

Hey there, whats your cycle code on your transcript, if you don't mind me asking?  If your cycle code ends in a 5 - your a weekly, which means your WMR will update on Saturdays (I'm a weekly as well).  An 846 code is good, that's your refund code!  Thats what you want to see, so congrats!  What has likely happened is that your transcript just updated with that 846 code and you will see movement on your WMR next.  As far as your last year request for DD and then receiving a check, normally things like that only happen because there is a discrepancy on your DD information (routing number, bank acct number, bank name, etc.).  Hopefully that doesn't happen for you this year.  Hope this helps and good vibes!

Thank You. Cycle Cpde: 20190605  I have next to the 846 = Refund Issued of 2/13 but no DD. As mentioned WMR no update.  So I was a little shocked.  Weird because my friend filed on 2/4 and WMR updated & will be getting refund 2 days before me when I filed on 2/1

Yeah its frustrating to be a weekly, for sure.  Over the years I have learned a lot because of it.  Your friend is likely not a weekly and therefor updates daily.  Also, something to note is that the IRS no longer pulls first in first out batches as it has in the past, its done randomly in "batches"so there is some truth to file date but not like before.  This causes a lot more inconsistency in trying to figure out when and why you were or weren't processed before someone else.  It can be super frustrating.  Just as an FYI, my date is Feb 13th as well.  🙂  I anticipate you will see some movement on your WMR over the weekend and that will give you your date as well.  Hope your DD goes through and you don't have to wait on a check this year.

The 846 code is the DD date. The status bar may not change until over the weekend. If your getting a check mailed it will be a week after that that you will receive it

I filed my return 1/31 and it was accepted within an hour. Today I was able to view my transcripts online with all the info. I don’t get EIC or ACTC. My cycle code is the same, 20190605. To the right of the cycle code it says 02-25-2019.  I see the 846 code on my account transcript, but I also see ‘Return issued 02-13- 2019’ on it, so is that our anticipated DDD? My filing fees have to come out, so mine will stop by SBTPG first... Oh, and the last couple years my info on WMR never made it to the 3rd bar until AFTER I already had my refund!

ConnieRN if the 846 date is usually the ddd date.  If it is direct deposit if it's a paper check it would be a couple of days after that, about a week

The best way to figure out when you are getting your money or if the IRS has approved you is to take the time to download your transcript on IRS.GOV.

Once you download your transcript

Go to "record of account transcript" and select 2019

Here you will see a bunch of "sh it" Just look for the codes and if you see "846" with refund date, Then you approved and all good.

The WMR and IRS.2GO apps seem to move slower especially if you are weekly.

The transcript will give you the most informative and most up to date information.

I have an offset and when I call the line it tells me my whole refund will be offseted but when I look on my transcript it shows no other codes after the 846 code saying that it is refunded.

I am curious does this mean my offset didn't go through. But it also shows that I am a weekly updated person.

In the past years if I got an offset it shows me the refunded amount that I get back under Refund amount and then the 848 code of who took the rest but not on this one.

Help if you have any clue as to what it is going on.

Butterlove did you get your refund yet or find out if the offset went through?

If you don't mind me asking what is your offset from?

Still have questions?

What does code 846 mean on IRS transcript with a date?

An IRS Code 846 on your transcript means that the IRS has issued you a refund for your tax return. You can use the cycle code to determine the approximate date that you will receive your refund, or you can use the Where's My Refund tool to get a more accurate date.

What does 846 refund issued mean?

You will need to wait for the 846 code (refund issued) to show on your transcript. This means the IRS has processed your return and your estimated direct deposit date (DDD) has been determined.

How long after 846 code will I get my refund?

Generally the 846 date is the when the IRS issues the refund payment or paper check confirmation. It could be 1 to 2 days later that you actually receive the actual payment via direct deposit (WMR status = Refund Sent). Paper checks can take up to a week longer to be received.

What does IRS Code 766 and 846 mean?

Hello Jane:) The 766 Code is a positive sign with a credit being issued to your account. The negative amount represents that there is a refund due back to you so no need to worry. The Code 846 will indicate that the refund has actually been issued to you and should be on its way to you as well.
