Elena is seen drinking some herbs and later describing her day to someone. It turns out that someone is Damon whom Elena has been hallucinating since months thanks to the herbs provided by Luke. She then asks him about his day to which "Damon" jokes about Alaric coming back to life to become a college professor. They both laugh and then embrace each other. Elena and "Damon" in her car. Elena drops by Luke's after he doesn't show with her herbs. He tells her he's cutting her off because she's in denial. She gets angry and starts ransacking his room, then threatens him. Later, Elena hallucinates Damon in a car, he wonders if she's not visiting Bonnie because he knows Bonnie would agree with Luke that she needs to move on. Elena asks him to not talk about this. "Damon" comforts Elena. Taking these herbs is making Elena very thirsty and so she decides to feed from a girl who she encounters on the road. Elena gets out to offer directions, but instead chomps down on her neck. Damon tells Elena to go easy, saying she nearly killed the last one and the one before that, and the one before that. Elena says she's still hungry and continues. Then Caroline shows up and the girl takes the opportunity to run. Caroline questions Elena on what she has been doing since summer. Elena explains her about the drugs and confesses that she tried to grieve him but it didn't work as every time she tried to think about the fact that she is never gonna see him again, she feels like she will die. She tells him good-bye. She kisses him and expects him to be gone, but he's still there as Elena can't let him go. Then he starts asking her how long until she goes running back to Luke, telling her she's going to feel a lifetime of agony and grief. She trashes the crypt and collapses crying. But Damon is still there. Elena smelling Damon's shirt. Later, in her dorm room, Elena is seen hugging Damon's shirt and looking at their framed picture when Alaric enters. She asks Alaric how he's handling coming back to life and being a vampire. He tells her he hates everything about being a vampire. She tells him she did too, until she found the idea of eternal love with Damon, but now since he is gone, she's lost it. She needs Alaric to do something for her. Because he was created by the original vampire spell, which means he can compel other vampires. She wants him to compel her to forget that she ever loved Damon. Elena decides to move on. In Yellow Ledbetter, in order to forget Damon, Elena packs up all her photos of Damon, along with his old clothes. She tells Matt and Jeremy her plan to have Alaric compel away her feelings for Damon and asks that they keep the truth from her. Alaric sits down with Elena and tells her that in order to erase her feeling for Damon, she needs to go back to when she first realized she loved him. He explains that the signature memory about Damon will affect all the others when he alters it. She's sad to be losing her memories of Damon as she doesn't want to stop loving him, but knows she needs to. Elena begins to relive old memories of her and Damon. She first tells him about their first meeting. Elena says, "I was in high school. There was something different about him, dangerous. But not in a way that scared me. It was exciting." Alaric changes it to meeting a stranger. Elena shares more Damon memories with Alaric, including when he stepped in as her escort for Miss Mystic Falls. She remembers it was the first time she noticed how sexy he was. But erasing that doesn't change things. They go through every moment she can come up with but none of them undo how she feels. Every time Alaric asks "Who is Damon Salvatore?", each time Elena responds with "He was my boyfriend, I loved him, he died." Eventually, Alaric tells Elena that it will not work if she does not admit when she fell for Damon, Elena says she cannot carry on and wants to stop. Elena and Damon longing for each other. After consulting Caroline, Alaric is told that she denies when she fell for him because she was with Stefan. She knew how much it hurt him as he loved her but he still gave her a thing that represented hope for her and Stefan. She says how selfless he was and in that moment she loved him. As she tells Alaric about this moment, stuck in another time, Damon reminisces about the same memory. He is sad and missing her. Alaric then alters this memory, and she remembers the night ending with Damon snapping Jeremy's neck in front of her. Finally, she doesn't remember Damon as her lover, but as a monster who died. In Welcome to Paradise, as a result of Elena losing all her good memories of Damon, she is back to hating him. She refers to him as "homicidal maniac" in front of Caroline. Meanwhile, Damon finds his car and remembers his last moment with Elena before they both died, Bonnie asks him what will he tell Elena when he comes back, and he says "I am gonna tell Elena how much I love her." Elena reads her Damon diary. In Black Hole Sun, Damon is in desperate attempts to get back to Elena and his brother. Stefan reveals to Elena that Alaric erased all her good memories of Damon. She can't believe she was in love with Damon, but Stefan explains it in a way that lets us know he truly understands why Elena and Damon were really in love. Neither of them can live without Damon, he says, but he has to knowing what he's lost. Elena goes to see Alaric, and he gives her the journal in which she wrote a letter to herself detailing why she had Alaric do it and why she hoped she'd not undo it. For now, she won't but still wants Alaric to hold onto everything just in case. In The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get, Damon is finally back and wants to see Elena. But Stefan stops him and tells him about her compulsion to forget her love for Damon. Damon is shocked to hear this but ensures Stefan that the moment their eyes will meet, everything will be okay again. Meanwhile, Caroline tells Elena about Damon's returns who is not so thrilled about it and refuses to meet him. Alaric then talks to her and tries to convince her she loves Damon, but she makes him promise he won't lift the compulsion. She tells him that she has planned to be at the Hospital for the whole day to avoid Damon. Elena refuses to see Damon. While getting ready to leave, Elena hears a knock at her door. When she hears Damon she refuses to open the door and let him in. He tries to remind her how she felt about him and that the compulsion is a lie. Elena is about to open the door when Damon says "I hear you breathing. You have no idea how long I wanted to hear you breathe." This makes her scared again and she stops. Damon tries a little more but at last says he is gonna kick the door open. Elena then finally opens the door, but jumps out of the window before he can see her. Damon draws himself on Elena's photo. Later, in Elena's dorm room, Damon notes that there are no pictures of him anywhere. So he picks Elena's graduation picture and draws a cartoon picture of himself around her. After a while, he gets a call from Elena who says she can't avoid him forever so she is ready to meet. She asks him to come by her dorm room and Damon says he will be there in a bit lying about the fact that he was already there waiting for her. Damon then checks his appearance in the mirror and hears someone walk in. He think its Elena but its actually Tripp who manages to capture him. Elena arrives after a little while and is shocked to see Damon's phone and his blood on the floor. She calls Alaric who calms her down saying they will get him. Elena and Damon finally see each other. While waiting for Alaric and Stefan to save Damon from Tripp, Elena confesses to Caroline that she wants her memories back. She can't imagine loving him, but doesn't want to ignore the truth. Unfortunately, while trying to save Damon from Tripp, Alaric crosses the border and turns human. Though Jo manages to save him, he is now a human which means he can't return Elena her memories. Later, in her dorm room, Elena finds her photos of Damon in her journal when he knocks on her door. They both take a deep breath and Elena finally opens the door. The episode ends with a cliffhanger of Damon and Elena coming face to face for the first time since his return. Damon has a look of awe on his face while Elena looks at him nervously. Damon tries to work things out. Going into the following episode, Damon tells Elena he knows Alaric wiped him out of her mind but is hoping some of it is coming back. He says imagining this moment is all that has kept him going. She says she remembers pain and the terrible things he did to the people she cared about, but nothing good that happened between them. She says she knows she loved him and forgave him for all the awful stuff but remembers nothing. She says she's sorry but she just doesn't feel it anymore. Damon and Elena dancing Damon attends the fundraiser and sees that Elena has a date. Liam kisses her and Damon stands about three feet away looking on in obvious discomfort. She sends him for a drink and tells Damon she didn't know he was there. Liam comes back for her drink order and Damon introduces himself. Liam asks if he's the ex that supposedly died. Damon covers for her and says it was more of an emotional death but says they're in a good place. Damon tries to stare the guy down and says he's confident and sexy. Damon tells Liam to go get her a chardonnay. He goes and Elena says she hates chardonnay which Damon knows and asks her for a dance to which she reluctantly accepts. Elena wants to try again. While dancing, she asks why are they dancing and he says because it would be a shame to deny the world of good of a dancer he is. He reminds her of when they first danced. He says Stefan stood her up and he stepped in all sexy and handsome and saved the day. She says she's there with someone and he can't show up announced. He says he came through time and space for her. He says even if he was drowning in grief, he would have hung onto every moment with her than have it erased. He says he would rather be in agony then erase even one memory of her. She says she needs air and goes out. Damon is having shots and Elena comes up to him, telling him that she wants to try to remember. She says maybe if they unwind the memories maybe something will come back and tells him to take her to the last place she told him she loved him. Damon tries to make Elena remember. Damon takes Elena to the city line but she doesn't remember. He asks what she does. She says she knows he had a plan to stop the Travelers then drove his car into the grill to blow himself up to save them. Damon tells her she hopped it the car with him and says he couldn't go without her. He says that's when he knew she was crazy enough to be to be the one for him. He tells her about the night of her graduation when she told him she was in love with him but refused apologize about it. He tells her there was a summer night before college when she showed him a meteor shower. He says the shooting stars began and then rain started, he took her hand and they stood in the rain. Elena risks her life to remember. She still doesn't remember anything and he tells her to try harder and she says she knows they had an amazing life together and gets what they had. She says when she looks in his eyes now, she feels like she's looking at a stranger because she can never give him what he wants. He says there are things you can't erase and says she knows that. He tells her he's sorry too. She goes running for the city line and steps over it. Most of her memories start to return until she starts to choke up the water she drowned in. Damon grabs her and pulls her back over, she says it's the only way to get rid of the compulsion. He says even if she can't remember anything, the last thing he would ever do is let her risk her life. Flashback to the summer of their lives. Damon takes Elena back to her dorm and she tells him that she remembered some of their life. Damon tells her when she became a vampire, he was happy that she could be with him forever. He says part of him was heartbroken that she wouldn't have the life she dreamed of. He says now she's got some of that back. He tells her she's better off without him and that she should live her life and be happy without him. He says he loves her enough to let her go. She asks about the night it rained on them at the meteor shower. He changes the story and just says they were cold and muddy and drove home then he leaves. Damon thinks back to the stormy night he didn't finish telling Elena about. They stood in the rain and she told him it would clear up. It didn't. He kissed her and they stood in the rain kissing and she told him to promise her this is for forever and he did. They held each other and kissed. Elena and Damon share a laugh. In Fade Into You, after discovering that there is still hope for Bonnie being alive, Damon without telling Elena makes a trip in search for Gemini coven along with Stefan and Alaric. Over phone, Alaric finally tells Elena about this. Elena wonders why Damon didn't tell her before to which Damon sarcastically replies "Why wouldn't I consult you in a decision that might permanently change your life? Hmm I wonder." At the end of the episode, Elena joins Damon at the bar. She tells him that he should have told her about Bonnie and then taken her to their search trip. He continues to taunt her about the compulsion thing. Elena then asks him about what did he and Bonnie did for months. Elena holds Damon's hand. He says bicker mostly. He tells how he still can't really believe she sacrificed herself so he could come back, but knows it was because of how much he talked about Elena. Elena tells him about her break up with Liam and then says there is this feeling inside her that she can't seem to shake. But she is at a crossroads if she should live a normal life or risk everything for this feeling. Damon asks what is its gonna be and she asks Damon to help her bring Bonnie back so Bonnie can help her decide what to do with her feelings. She holds his hand and Damon smiles and says sure. Elena and Damon working with Liv. In I Alone, Elena and Damon team up with Liv to bring back Bonnie. While walking in the woods, they discuss about Caroline's feelings for Stefan and Elena tells him she just wants both of them to be happy. They meet Liv with the ascendant and blood from Lucy Bennett. Liv gives them vials of her blood to drink to link them to her so she can find them and bring them back, plus an extra for Bonnie. She tells them they have about eight hours to find Bonnie and bring her back. Damon and Elena drink her blood and then Liv pours the Bennett blood on the ascendant and recites the spell. They both land up in the Prison world and are ready to find Bonnie and bring her back. Elena and Damon finally hear from Bonnie. Elena and Damon first go to Salvatore House and search for her but she isn't there which makes Elena wonder if Kai has done something to her. Damon tells her to not be negative but Elena finds Bonnie's blood on the cushion. Damon then uses a pager to contact Kai. While waiting for Kai's call, Elena wonders around the house and comes across Damon's video journals which he made during his time in the prison world. She starts playing it but Damon stops her from seeing it. He tries to cover it up by saying its an audition tape but Elena doesn't believe him. She tries to ask the truth but then the phone rings. Its Bonnie and she reveals to them how Kai left her to die in Portland and stole her blood. She tells them that she can make it to Mystic Falls in seven hours. As she hangs up, Damon starts to worry that Kai might be already out. Elena and Damon cook together. Later, Damon and Elena make blueberry pancakes together in the Salvatore kitchen. They sit down to eat them but before Damon can eat his, Elena makes fangs with the cream just like he used to do. Damon smiles and they start eating. Elena sees the news story about Kai's murderous rampage and wonders why Jo would hand over the ascendant. Damon tries to change the topic but is finally forced to admit that he compelled Alaric to steal it from her. Elena storms out of the kitchen and Damon goes after her. She thinks that his dedication to bring Bonnie back is only for her to see what a great guy he is and so she falls for him all over again. Elena lashes out at Damon for being so selfish and leaves. Elena and Damon share a moment. Damon goes to see Elena on the Gilbert porch. He tells her that on May 10, 1994 he was mad at Stefan and acted out and a lot of people died. He has felt guilty ever since, which is why he thought that this was his personal hell. But Bonnie wouldn't let him believe it and had hope for both of them. He tells Elena that he is doing this for Bonnie and not for her. He confesses that they finally managed to become friends. Elena smiles at this and Damon goes and sits beside her at the swing. They both reach a new level of comfort and share smiles. When Elena says that the swing used to squeak, Damon says it did but he fixed it. He confesses that he used to come here everyday because this was the closest he had of a picture of her. Elena starts to get nostalgic about her old house and confesses, despite so many good memories, it took only one bad memory for her to burn it down. Damon encourages her to go inside the house and she agrees. "We will make new ones." Before opening the gate, she apologizes to Damon for compelling away the memories saying it was of both of them. He smiles and say they will make new ones and touches her face gently. They both smile and are having a moment when they feel something changing around them. They find themselves back in the cemetery in real world. Tyler and Liv are there and they both look sorry as Tyler says Kai is after Liv and they have to go to Mystic Falls. Elena starts to follow them, but the border of Mystic Falls stops her. Damon comforts Elena. Elena and Damon are sitting beside the grave site, sad that their plan failed. But Damon gives her hope saying that as long as they have the ascendant they can try anytime. But then Kai finds them and uses magic to break the ascendant. Damon is eager to kill him, but Kai still has Liv's magic and incapacitates him. He goes towards Elena who is trying to fix the ascendant but he starts a spell to burn both of them. He uses invisibility to protect himself from Damon but he menages to locate him and sends Kai across the border to Mystic Falls. The fire stops but the ascendant is destroyed. Damon comforts Elena and asks if she is okay as Kai tells them he is ready to create havoc in Mystic Falls without any vampire to stop him. Elena and Damon feel sad for Bonnie. Later, Alaric confronts Damon in the woods. He doesn't want to hear Damon's excuses that Kai getting out isn't their fault and punches him. Elena arrives and tries to comfort a sad Damon. He tells her he left Bonnie a note to meet them at the porch and knows she has probably reached there right now. He confesses how she sacrificed so much for all of them and now is left all alone in the prison world. Both feel sad over their failed mission to bring Bonnie back. Elena watches Damon sleeping. In Christmas Through Your Eyes, Elena and Damon are still looking for a way to bring back Bonnie. They are looking in Alaric's books for something that resembles an ascendant. Elena is watching Damon while he is sleeping. When he sees her gazing he smiles and asks her if she is watching him sleep. She teases him that she is watching him drool all over Alaric's textbook. Damon continues to search while Elena keeps staring him. When Damon notices it, she thanks him for helping Bonnie. Alaric then calls them to inform that Jo has gone missing. They all gather at Jo's apartment and Elena reports about the stabbing victims brought into the hospital last night and now one of them is missing. She also says that no one has seen Jo. Damon says they should find Kai and kill him. He thinks that since he hid the knife in a painting at Jo's apartment, Kai will come looking for it and he will kill him. But when he sees the back of the painting the knife is not there. Damon and Alaric go to find Kai and kill him while Elena goes to the hospital to see Liz. Damon is unable to see Elena. Later, they are talking through phone but the reception is horrible as Kai is taking all the travelers magic which was used in the anti magic spell in Mystic Falls. As he takes away all the magic, Mystic Falls is no longer magic free which means they all can go home again. Damon tells this to Elena over phone who says that she doesn't know what they were or are supposed to be but after a horrible day she wants to see him and has something to tell him. Damon asks her to come over, he will cook her dinner and they can talk about their crappy days. When Elena reaches the Salvatore house, she sees a Mistletoe hanging on the door and laughs at Damon's clever antics. She knocks and Damon opens the door but he sees no one there. He closes the door and Elena is shocked when Kai appears behind her saying that he put a cloaking spell on them and then knocks her out. Damon saves Elena from Kai. In Woke Up With a Monster, Elena is held captive by Kai who is practicing his new found magic on her. She manages to free herself for few minutes and calls Damon saying that Kai has her at the High School. Damon takes Liv's help to perform a cloaking spell on him but Luke stops her and takes her away. Jo volunteers to help then saying she will be able to perform the spell. After Jo is able to perform the spell successfully, they both find Elena and free her. Jo is able to make Elena invisible as well but she isn't strong enough to hold the spell for long. While in the hallway, Jo is ready to fall over and Kai finds the trio after her cloaking spell wears off. Damon tells her to run as he faces Kai, not prepared for how powerful he is. Kai cloaks Elena then stops Damon in his tracks. Damon is able to throw a broom handle into Kai, but it's only an illusion of him and it is actually Elena. Kai brings Damon to his knees then he takes off after Jo. However, Alaric and Jeremy arrive in time and manage to knock down Kai. "I have never felt more alive." Later, Damon removes the spear from Elena, but she is still weak and gasping. She thinks there is a splinter still insider her. As Damon tries to find it, she gasps for breath and tells him if there is anything he wants to say, now is the time. Damon starts panicking but then she starts laughing, revealing that she was tricking him. They both hold hands as they smile at each other. Alaric and Jo arrive and he asks Elena if she is okay. Elena looks at Damon and says, "I have never felt more alive". Elena asks Damon on a date. Later, they all are at Alaric's apartment, making arrangements to keep Kai unconscious. Elena asks Damon on a dinner but Damon tries to tease her saying that every time they try to go on a date, something bad happens like him being sent to a prison world or Elena's feelings getting compelled. Elena tells him to stop sulking and let her take him to dinner tomorrow. Damon replies that they are going to find out about it tomorrow and both share a flirtatious smile. Elena and Damon plan their date. In Prayer For the Dying, at Alaric's apartment, Elena is getting ready for her shift at the hospital when Damon arrives with a sandwich for her. She says she is in a hurry and takes a bite from his hand. She shows him her new daylight ring which Jo made for her but Damon is still not sure about her magic. Elena asks him to believe in her and then reminds him that his job is to babysit Kai and not to kill him. She is then leaving when Damon gets her ID card and asks her out for a dinner tonight. Elena agrees but when Damon makes a suggestion for watching a French flick to throw popcorn at hipsters, Elena realizes that they have already been there. She tells him that this is cheating and says they have to start over from the beginning. She tells him to pick her up once her shift gets over and he agrees. They say their goodbyes and Elena leaves for work. Elena and Damon at the hospital. Later, Damon joins Elena at the hospital after learning about Colin's situation. He is a vampire who is affected with cancer and since Caroline fed Liz her blood, it is going to happen to Liz too. Elena tries to comfort Damon who is really upset over Liz's condition. Later, Damon gets an idea of making Kai take away all the magic inside Liz which will stop her accelerating cancer. Kai agrees on the condition that he will merge with Jo tonight. Damon brings Kai to the hospital and along with Elena watches over him. Kai is successful in taking away the magic from Liz but unfortunately Liz is not able to handle it and starts suffering from a heart attack. Elena performs chest compressions on Liz but it doesn't work. Caroline and Stefan arrive as well and Liz somehow finds strength to survive. Elena and Damon finally kiss. After witnessing Liz almost dying in her arms, Elena is freaked out. Damon tries to be there for her and she kisses him. Damon tells her that he thought she wanted to start over because this is exactly where they left off. Elena surprises him by saying that life is too short whether immortal or not and so she doesn't want to waste another minute. Damon smiles and they kiss again. Damon wipes off cream from Elena's mouth. In The Day I Tried To Live, it's Bonnie's birthday and the gang is planning a birthday party for her even if she is not there with them. Damon is in the kitchen arranging cupcakes when Elena arrives with groceries. She is tempted to taste one but Damon warns her that Caroline will kill them. Elena says its worth the risk and Damon feeds her one. Damon finds some cream left on her mouth and wipes it off and then licks his finger. Elena brings up their kiss and says she is completely okay with it. Damon smiles and they start kissing but are interrupted by Kai. Kai, who is now all powerful after winning the merge has suddenly started feeling bad as an after effect of merging with Luke. He tried writing a letter to Jo and found himself crying over it. He tells them to give this to Jo and Elena asks for something in return, help in bringing Bonnie back. Elena and Damon work with Kai. Kai says he can't repair the ascendant. Damon plays on Kai's new found emotions about it being Bonnie's birthday and convinces him to send a message to her about where to find magic, that is Nova Scotia, Qetsiyah's magic-soaked blood on Silas' tombstone. Jeremy joins them and is still skeptical over Kai's new found goodness. Kai says it's possible and cites an example of Elena, how she was dating the good Salvatore when she was human and after turning into a vampire, she stopped caring about right and wrong and began dating the bad one. He finally manages to do the spell and they are all back in the prison world but Bonnie can't see them and they can't touch anything. They see Bonnie watching footage of her with Damon and then drinking the oldest bourbon in the house. Damon tells them about a pact they made if they couldn't take solitude anymore, they will drain the bourbon and then kill themselves. Elena and Damon drinking Bourbon. Suddenly they're all back in the real world. Kai's nose is bleeding from the magic drain. Damon then tells him that he had scribbled notes about Nova Scotia in a book, they just need to get her to see it. Jeremy volunteers to go alone, even though it could mean he gets stuck there. Later, Damon goes to his room and drinks the same bourbon. Elena joins him and then asks him if she would be with Damon if she was still human. He says she wouldn't. Elena doesn't love the answer and tries to leave the room, but she is blocked by a spell. They hear Liv fighting with Kai. After sometime, Damon hears Liv below them and kicks a hole in the fire place, then drops the bottle of bourbon down. The booze hits the flame below and knocks Liv off her feet and frees them. Elena and Damon make love. They rush to the kitchen and find Kai and Jeremy in an unconscious stage. Damon heals Kai by giving him some of his blood while Elena helps Jeremy wake up. He tells them that Bonnie is okay and both of them share a relieved smile. After cleaning up the house with Jeremy, Elena visits Damon in his room. He asks her about Jeremy applying to an Art School and jokes how they should compel him a descent portfolio. Elena smiles and then says he is moving on with his life and so should she. She reveals to him that despite the fact that Matt was taking her back to Stefan that night, she found her way back to Damon. Elena and Damon cuddling. She says she somehow always finds her way back to him, it doesn't matter if she is human or a vampire, if she is with memories or without them. She says if past is a place without them being together, then they should stop living in it. Damon completely moved by her confession, rushes to kiss her and they start making out passionately. Damon then begins to undress her and pushes her on the bed. After making love for the first time ever since Damon's return, Elena is feeling content and is gazing at a sleeping Damon. She then snuggles close to him. Elena and Damon meet Jeremy's principal. In Stay, Elena and Damon meet Jeremy's Principal to try to convince him to let him graduate early to go to art school. The principal refuses, citing his various bad behavior in the past years. Having no choice, they decide to compel the Principal to allow Jeremy an early graduation. They visit Jeremy at the Grill and announce the good news to him. Though Elena confesses to their act of compulsion. When Elena leaves to get a drink, Damon tells Jeremy about his going away present which he has put under his graduation cap, it is a joint. Damon jokes that if Jeremy tells this to Elena, he will kill him again. Elena kisses Damon goodbye. Later, Damon calls Elena from Liz's office as they need some information about Elena's parents' accident. Though Elena is buzzed as Jeremy and her smoked away Damon's going away present. Damon asks Elena to freshen up and come visit as it is important. Elena agrees and says goodbye to Jeremy. At Liz's office, Elena tells Liz and Damon that she has no idea why her parents took Wickery Bridge and that there was luggage in the trunk. She says she will ask Jeremy if he knows anything and kisses Damon goodbye. Later, Damon and Elena hold on to each while being there for Liz and Caroline during Liz's last moments. Elena helps Damon in finishing up the eulogy. In Let Her Go, Damon is trying to finish up Liz's eulogy but is facing extreme difficulty in doing so. When Elena joins him, she shows her concern for Caroline but then notices that Damon hasn't finished the eulogy. Damon tells her how he is not a nice person and can't finish this up. Elena then tells him that this is not about Liz or Damon himself but about Caroline and what she needs to hear. She then kisses him and leaves. This works as Damon is finally able to complete the eulogy. During the funeral, Elena and Damon sit together and comfort each other as they pay their respects to Liz. Damon tells Elena that his mother his alive. In A Bird in a Gilded Cage, Elena comes home to find Damon working out his rage by breaking things. He tells her about how Stefan's loss of humanity is going to be a big problem for them. Elena agrees and says it is not their only problem as now they have lost a chance to trigger Caroline's emotions since Stefan was her emotional trigger. Damon then shows her the video footage of his mother, Lily Salvatore, alive and trapped in 1903 prison world. Elena is really happy after hearing this but Damon tells her that she is a ripper. He says, "It makes perfect sense, Stefan was always a Mama's boy." Elena gets an idea and gives Damon a knowing expression. Damon understands what she means and says that they can't solve a ripper problem by unleashing another. But Elena manages to convince him by saying that this doesn't only solve their Caroline and Stefan problem but Damon also gets a chance to be with his mother again. Elena and Damon meet Lily Salvatore. Later, with the help of Bonnie and Kai, Elena and Damon travel to 1903 prison world. Bonnie and Kai go to find the ascendant while Elena and Damon visit his mother. They are in Damon's childhood home and looking around when his mother shows up and is shocked to see him. Lily serves them tea and tells them about her life. She was turned after a nurse fed her vampire blood in 1858. Damon sarcastically comments on how she never visited them making Lily uncomfortable. Elena tries to change the topic and asks Lily about how she was trapped in here. Lily tells them how a group of witches trapped her here. When Damon tells her about how Stefan killed his father, she is amused and confesses how she hated their father. Elena, Damon and Lily. When Lily asks about Stefan, they explain his current condition and how they think she will be able to bring back his humanity. She agrees to help and Damon tells her to pack her bags. Lily then says she will alert the others as well. She sees their shocked expressions and tells them about her traveling companions. She introduces them to a table full of mummified vampires and Damon and Elena are disturbed by this. Lilly explains that these vampires saved her from herself and her ripper tendencies. She says they gave up their blood rations for her and she learned to control her blood lust so that she will be able to save enough amount of blood to wake them up someday. When Lilly goes to get the last of the blood to revive them, Damon comments on how she is an insane ripper while Elena tries to defend her. She then notices the ascendant is on the table and Damon tells her about Bonnie's plan to trap Kai here. Elena and Damon see Lily's traveling companions. Elena and Damon get ready to leave the place and Damon informs Lily that they are down a witch so she her traveling companions will have to take the next trip. She disagrees and Damon promises her that they will come back for them. But Lily doesn't listen and goes to revive them. Damon tells Elena and Bonnie to start the spell and he will get Lily. Damon manages to convince Lily and they all return to the real world. "It's a good thing we have forever." Later, at night, in the Salvatore kitchen, Elena is staring at Damon's childhood picture when Damon enters. She excitedly says he has got her eyes from his mother and Damon asks her she brought this back from the prison. Elena comments how its the only baby picture of her boyfriend in existence, so of course she brought it back. He takes the picture and Elena tells him how she liked seeing this side of him today, "A mothers' son". Damon says how she is just a tool to bring back Stefan's humanity but Elena encourages him to give her sometime. Damon teases her that she is lucky she is so adorable because her eternal optimism is super annoying. Elena blushes and says that she knows it from experience that it is never too late to look for good in someone. Damon comments on how they will be looking for a very long time. Elena then says that then it is a good thing they have forever. Damon is surprised since this is the first time that Elena has talked about her future after her memory loss. They both then smile and lean in to kiss each other. They start making out and Damon places her on the kitchen counter. He continues to kiss her when they notice that Bonnie has arrived. Elena and Damon make out. Bonnie apologizes but Elena says its okay and says she has to go ask Alaric about Caroline and Stefan. She gives a quick kiss to Damon and leaves. Damon tells Bonnie that this better be good. She says that she just wanted to thank him as he helped her get back from the prison and gives a gift to him. The gift turns out to be the cure for vampirism. Bonnie got it as Damon wanted it for Elena. Damon is left shaken as he has no idea what to do with it. Elena and Damon in their bathroom. In I Never Could Love Like That, Elena and Damon are cuddling in the bathroom after taking a bath when they hear Lily cooking. Damon makes a joke about her and Elena asks him to be quiet as Lily can hear them. She then starts the tap so that Lily can't hear them. Damon hugs Elena from behind while she tells him to give his mother a chance. Damon is not interested and says she is just a tool to get Stefan's humanity back. He says the sooner they get back Stefan and Caroline, the better. Elena then starts looking for her shirt and asks Damon if he has seen it. He teases her that he prefers her without one. Elena replies back she is not sure if his mother would prefer her like this. She then starts to open their drawer for a shirt but Damon stops her and offers her his shirt. Elena takes it and after kissing him leaves to change. Damon then opens the drawer and it is where he is hiding the cure. Elena and Damon have breakfast with Lily. After getting dressed, Elena and Damon meet Lily for breakfast. She has cooked it for them and has made Damon's favorite "Eggie in Baskie". Damon says it doesn't taste like last time. Lily explains that he was human when he tasted it last time, after many years his taste has changed. She then asks Elena that she is new with it. Elena says she turned a few years ago. Lily then asks if she misses being human and Elena says sometimes. Damon gives a warning look to Lily and she changes the topic to the ascendant. She starts talking about how they need a celestial event to free her companions from the 1903 prison world. Damon says they are rare to occur but Lily has already researched about the upcoming celestial events by looking them up on Stefan's computer. Elena then receives a message from Jo about how some more students have been attacked in Whitmore college. She thanks Lily for breakfast and leaves for Whitmore. Later, when Lily and Damon are headed to campus, Damon asks Lily to send Elena a text about them coming. While learning how to write a short text, she brings up the question about how Damon feels for Elena. He tells her that he loves her, she loves him and that they are in love. Lily says that he is afraid he will ruin all that now that he has the cure. She confesses to overheard his conversation with Bonnie when she gave him the cure. Damon says he doesn't know if Elena wants it and Lily says she knows he fears it that Elena wants the cure and if she takes it then he will lose her. After learning that Lily never cared enough for Stefan and him to return back to them, Damon calls Elena to tell her how their plan won't work. Elena knows that Damon is hurt and tries to ask him about it. At first, Damon ignores it by saying how he also wasn't going to complete her end of the bargain that was to free her companions. Elena then says its okay to feel hurt as Lily was the second women to abandon him while Damon replies, "Says the women who never has." Elena smiles on hearing this and Damon asks her to help him form a new plan. Elena suggests to make Lily lie to Stefan about how she was coming back for her sons. "I love you." "I love you too." Later, Damon finds Elena outside the hospital and begins telling her about his day when Elena blurts out that she wants to throw Jo a baby shower. She tells him she feels a little guilty for not reacting properly after hearing Jo's pregnancy news. Damon understands that she was jealous as she can never have babies. Elena tells him how she always wanted a family before she turned into a vampire. She notices Damon's sad face and says that she gets to have a life with him which is also what she has always wanted. She rests her head on his shoulder and Damon asks her if things could be different but Elena says they are not so it doesn't matter. He kisses her forehead and says I love you to her and she smiles and says I love you too. They start kissing but are interrupted by Elena's phone. Elena and Damon at the hospital. They both go meet Jo at the hospital, she has some news for them. She says she has talked to her father about Kai being stuck in 1903 prison. His father has told her to destroy the ascendant but Damon says that he has already given it to Lily. Jo asks him to get it back and destroy it. She then goes on to explain about Lily's companions. They were Siphoners until Lily turned them into a vampire. Now they are both witch and vampire and are called Heretic. Jo says they are ruthless and can't be allowed to escape. Elena and Damon plan with Stefan. In Because, Elena and Damon plan with Stefan on how to trap Caroline so that they can bring her humanity back. Stefan tells them that he will find Caroline, convince her that his mother was unsuccessful in turning his humanity back on and so they should keep the party going. When Elena questions if Caroline would even want to see Stefan, Damon tells her about them sleeping together. When Elena realizes it was after their humanities were switched off, Stefan becomes embarrassed and asks both of them to drop this topic. He then reveals his plan that they will first weaken Caroline and then bombard her with her past memories. Their triumph card is a letter which Liz had written for Caroline to be given to her after she passes away. Once Stefan traps Caroline at B & B Room, Damon reaches their and shoots both of them with vervain tarts. Elena tells Damon about her human life fantasy with him. Damon and Elena keep Caroline and Stefan trapped in order to starve Caroline until she's vulnerable enough to finally get her to turn her humanity back on. On the third day, when Caroline wakes up, they try to go on with their plan. Elena brings Caroline the letter Liz wrote to it and try to make her read it but to her dismay, Caroline makes Stefan burn it. Later, Elena tells Damon on how she blew her only chance at getting back Caroline's humanity. Damon tries to comfort her and tells her how the fact that she sucks at torturing people is nothing to be ashamed of, she has him to do such work. Elena then brings the topic of Alaric and Jo's honeymoon which makes Damon asks her that if she was human, where would she see herself in five years from now. Elena's quick response is with him but Damon tells her to elaborate. She says they would be living in a loft in Tribeca, above the bar Damon works at. As he puts it, he'd be Matt Donovan in her fantasy except she makes him the owner of the bar. She would be in a surgical residency program and that they'd have two kids together so that they can keep each other company when Elena and Damon get distracted by other things. Elena kisses him and asks him the same question but they are interrupted by Caroline's voice. Elena and Damon try to bring back Caroline's humanity. They go back to see Stefan and Caroline. Damon shows them police reports for all of the people they've killed. He talks about how Liz would feel seeing her daughter this way. Caroline asks Damon what it's like to know he can't give Elena the life she really wants and to know that, as a vampire, Elena will always be settling. Elena gets upset and quickly leaves. Damon catches up with her, she tells him that she's not settling. Damon points out if Elena were human, she and Damon wouldn't work because human Elena chose Stefan. Elena questions why is he acting like this and Damon tells her to admit what she really wants. Elena finally admits that she'll never be 100% okay with being a vampire but it doesn't matter because she gets to be with Damon forever and just the thought of it is good enough for her. Then Damon's phone starts ringing and its Lily. Elena leaves so that Damon can take the call. Lily is furious with Damon since the ascendant which will bring back her family is missing. She asks Damon to bring it back or else she will destroy the cure to vampirism. Damon visits Bonnie and tries to get the ascendant but she scares him when she brings up the doubt of Elena living a human life without him and also the fact that heretics can hurt a human Elena. So he leaves without getting the ascendant. He then returns home but Lily already has set another plan in motion. She says by destroying the cure she would be doing a favor to him, so instead she has placed the cure in their decorated kitchen for Elena to see. When Elena finds it, she is surprised and comes to Damon to ask about it. Lily says how Damon was never going to give it to her and leaves. Elena realizes what Damon was getting at asking about her thoughts for five years from now. He confesses to Elena that he didn't stop his mother when she threatened to destroy it because her human fantasy with him scared the hell out of him. When Elena says it was just a game, Damon answers all he sees from five years from now is her and he wants her to have the life she desires but the reason why he didn't tell her about it was because he loves her so much that he was scared that he will lose her. Elena then says that they will give the cure to someone else but Damon tells her to take it. She refuses because she doesn't want to live without him either. Damon then says, "You're gonna take the cure, Elena, and I'm gonna take it with you. I don't want to face my future without you. I'll become human, too", leaving Elena stunned. In I'd Leave My Happy Home For You, it's Jo's and Alaric's bachelor party, where Elena and Damon talk about their idea of being human with their friends. Alaric and Enzo can't believe that Damon would give up being a vampire but he stays firm on his decision. On the other hand, Jo and Bonnie encourage Elena to take the cure. When Bonnie raises the question of human Elena not loving Damon, Jo silences her by saying being supernatural doesn't change ones feeling. Jo further tells how love requires a leap of faith. Their conversation is interrupted by Damon's text, asking Elena to come to Town Square. While on the phone, she teases him on how he got a lap dance and now he feels guilty. Damon, who is up at the Mystic Falls Clock Tower teases Elena about eating fries, Elena then looks up and finds Damon. Elena and Damon living their last day as vampires. Later, Elena and Damon are sitting at the clock tower and eating fries. Damon jokes about not being able to eat so much fat as humans to which Elena questions if his decision to be human was a genuine one or because of his fear of losing her. Damon says it was both. Elena says her concern is if he becomes human, he will give up his vampirism, something he loves and hence they won't be happy because Damon will resent her for the rest of their lives. Damon jokes about being sexy when he is resentful but Elena asks him to be serious. He dodges the question and tells Elena he wants to show her something. He gets up and takes her hand and they both jump from the clock tower, enjoying their vampire perks for the last time. Elena and Damon discuss perks of being a vampire. Later, Elena and Damon are walking on the road, when Damon asks her, her favorite thing about being a vampire. She says the fact that she can heal people, Damon teases that no vampire has ever said that. He answers his favorite things, the speed, the feed, the immortality. He then says about getting inside people's head and enters Elena's. He has created a vision of Gilbert House. He says how this was the first place he kissed her but she doesn't remember it. Elena says but the vision isn't real and Damon says he knows that, which is why he is ready to take this step with her. He says, "I mean, as epic as this life is, we'd be giving up so much more if we didn't do this. I've had so much fantasy in my life, Elena. Enough for 100 lifetimes. I'd give it all up for one life with you." Elena takes the cure. He takes the cure and encourages Elena to take it. She says she wants this but for Damon there is no going back. He again ensures her that he is ready for it but Elena says that he is impulsive and reckless to which Damon says, "And madly in love with you forever! No matter how long that's gonna be. And taking this cure, Elena, won't change that. I'm ready for a little reality if you are." She says "I love you", Damon says "till death do up apart" and Elena then drinks the cure. Elena and Damon's first date. After taking the cure, Elena starts feeling dizzy. Damon asks her how is she feeling and Elena starts getting flashes of their past. She gets a flash of their first official date as a couple during the summer of their lives. They have gone to an Italian Joint and both are feeling shy at their first date. They are about to order but both end up speaking at the same time. Damon tells her to go first and she says Eggplant Parmesan to which Damon says, "You're an eggplant girl, huh?" Elena panics thinking he doesn't like Eggplant but he says he loves it and says he was just taking notes. Elena teases for their second date, but Damon says he was thinking about five years anniversary. Elena and Damon kiss after she gets her memories back Back in the present, Damon is carrying an unconscious Elena to his car. He makes her sit on the hood of his car and Elena starts waking up. Elena tells him that she is okay and starts getting more flashes. When she realizes what is happening, she excitedly tells Damon that she is getting her memories back making him excited as well. She uses a pin to prick her finger and when it doesn't heal, they know it for sure that it worked. Damon asks her how is she feeling about this and she says she feels like wanting to kiss him. They start making out but Damon gets a call from Stefan. Stefan warns Damon to not take the cure because Lily is getting out of control. When he is about to tell Elena about Stefan's warnings, Lily comes and snaps Damon's neck. When she sees Elena bleeding, she realizes she is human now and wants to feed on her. Elena manages to run away from Lily while continuously getting flashes of her memories. "I love you more than I ever thought was humanly possible." At the Salvatore House, Elena tells Damon how she now remembers their entire journey. She says remembering their past was like a million tiny, little pieces of her heart have now fallen back into place. She says how she didn't want to love him but couldn't control the feeling, she was consumed by it. She then brings up their conversation from the island, when Damon told her how he thinks being human is the most miserable thing on earth. She thinks Damon hasn't thought through this human thing, he was so afraid of losing her that he convinced himself that he could endure a human life. When Damon tries to defend himself, Elena tells him she loves him more than she ever though was humanly possible and so she can't let him do this unless he has let everyone including himself talk him out of it. Elena leaves, leaving a heartbroken Damon behind. Damon shows Stefan his and Elena's loft. In I'll Wed You in the Golden Summertime, it's Alaric and Jo's wedding day and Elena asks Stefan to plant doubts in Damon's mind about turning human. She thinks Damon hasn't thought properly about it and hence takes Stefan's help. Stefan takes Damon to a house in the suburbs. He doesn't think Damon has thought through things like neighbors, mortgage, paper work and leftovers but Damon manages to counter each one of Stefan's argument. Stefan then says he will also have to figure out a way to make money and that he won't be able to get any from Stefan because then people can use Stefan to track Damon and drink the cure from him. So if the words get out, Elena and Damon will have to run away and get isolated from the whole word, which Stefan describes as Damon's hell. But Damon surprises him when he takes out a paper of an advertisement of a loft. He says this will be Elena and his life, a loft above a bar, near a medical school. Elena and Damon in Stefan's visions. Stefan calls Elena to tell her that despite Elena's fears, Damon has thought through his human life with her. Elena urges Stefan to push Damon and make him see that he wouldn't be happy. So later, when Damon asks Stefan if they are ready to go to wedding, Stefan asks him what happens if he and Elena breaks up. Damon is pretty sure it won't happen with them but Stefan forces him to see a vision of Elena and Damon's future. It's been two years since Elena and Damon got married. Damon is waiting for Elena to return from work but when she does, she is tired. She kisses Damon on his head and goes to upstairs, leaving Damon sad. Back in present, Damon refuses to believe that this would affect them. Damon post Elena's death in Stefan's vision Stefan then shows him another vision of seven years from now. Damon returns to Elena and his apartment, drunk and tries to kiss Elena but she doesn't reciprocate his affections saying he is drunk. Damon gets annoyed saying how his bar is more affectionate then her. This makes Elena angry and they end up fighting. It turns ugly, when Damon says being human with her was a mistake and Elena agrees. In reality, Damon has enough of it and makes Stefan stop this vision. But he doesn't and further shows a vision in which Elena has died. In the vision, Damon is seen to be devastated, drinking alcohol and is about to cry. When it ends, Damon is visibly shaken from it. Stefan reveals how this was Elena's idea which makes Damon even more sad. He is lost and doesn't know what to do. Damon agrees to take the cure At the wedding, Damon finds Elena at the hall, waiting for him. He compliments her on her looks and then goes on to tell her how Stefan didn't go easy on him because of her. He had made up his mind but then he saw an old married couple. They were arguing about leftovers while still being madly in love. Seeing them convinced Damon that Elena and him could work as humans too. So he tells Elena, "I've been a vampire for a long time, Elena. It's been a blast. I would give it up in a second to be your husband, your partner, the father of your kids." Though happy, Elena still says that he just can't take it for her but Damon convinces her otherwise saying, "I can take it for us. Okay? Because even if it doesn't work, even if it all goes to hell, even if I'm miserable and alone, the smallest chance of a perfect life with you is infinitely better than an immortal one without you. And I know this, Elena. I love you and I will love you until I take my last breath on this earth." They both smile happily at each other and start kissing. Elena and Damon make love in the attic Later, Elena and Damon are making love in the attic of the barn when Damon hears some noises through his vampire hearing. When Elena notices, she takes her phone and sees the time. They both lost track of time and now are extremely late. Elena throws Damon his tuxedo and ask him to wear it while she starts wearing her own dress. Once they reach the venue, Caroline is angry and tells them she hopes it was worth it. When Damon is about to go into the details, she silences him and asks them to go take their place as the Maid of honor and the Best man. Elena and Damon start walking the aisle, while linking their arms. Elena and Damon look at each other during the vows Once they reach, Damon lets Alaric know about his decision to turn human which makes Alaric proud. Then Jo enters, walking the aisle with her father. When Alaric starts saying his vows, Elena and Damon start looking at each other happily. When Alaric says, "you've shown me that happiness is actually something that I can have in my life", Damon looks at Elena and does his signature eye thing making Elena smile. When it's time for Jo's vows, suddenly someone stabs her. When Jo falls into Alaric's arms because of her wounds, Kai shows himself. He is back and he attacks the entire hall by shattering the glasses and windows. The episode ends with the camera focusing on an unconscious Elena. Damon with Elena in her mind In I'm Thinking Of You All The While, in Elena's mind, Damon is waiting for Elena on the road where they first met, similar to their first meeting. When Elena arrives she asks Damon what is he doing. He says he is waiting for her. When she asks says on the road where they first met, he tells her he is feeling symbolic and kisses her. When they pull away, Elena knows her condition is bad but Damon avoids the question, asking her to dance with him instead. Damon tries to wake up Elena Back in the reality, Damon is holding an unconscious Elena and desperately trying to awaken her. He tries to feed her his blood but it doesn't work since she has taken the cure. Damon starts panicking and calls out for Stefan. Stefan gets there along with Caroline and he tells Damon to take Elena to the hospital immediately. Damon takes Elena in his arms and vamp speeds out of the wedding venue. Damon with Elena in the hospital At the hospital, the doctor tells Damon that there is nothing physically wrong with her but despite this she is not waking up. After sometime, a newly turned vampire, Kai comes to the hospital. He is bitten by Tyler and has no idea how to cure a werewolf bite. Damon tells him he will get the cure once Kai tells him what has he done to Elena. Kai refuses which makes Damon furious. He starts going out of control and threatens Kai. Kai then reveals what he did with Elena. He has linked her to Bonnie, meaning as long as Bonnie lives, Elena will be sleeping. He has also made sure that if someone tries to find a loophole to this spell, both Elena and Bonnie will die. As a furious Damon is about to attack Kai, he runs away from the hospital, leaving a hopeless Damon behind. Damon tells Elena about how Kai hexed her Back in Elena's mind, Damon tries to again convince Elena for a dance but she can see whatever Damon is trying to hide is really bad. She asks him to tell her and then Damon sadly reveals the whole situation to her. Elena is shocked and Damon dejectedly tells her how Kai won. Elena starts panicking after hearing this, fearing what might Damon do. Back in the reality, Damon goes to find Kai and finds a dying Bonnie over there. Kai tries to lure him to let Bonnie die, this way no one will blame him as everyone will think Kai killed Bonnie and Damon will get to have his dream life with Elena. Damon pretends to take Kai's offer and leaves but returns and kills Kai. He then saves Bonnie from dying, proving to everyone how he has really changed from the selfish person he used to be. Damon besides Elena's casket Next day, at the Salvatore House, everyone is gathered around a sleeping Elena in a coffin to say goodbye to her. After everybody say their goodbyes apart from Damon, Damon and Stefan take Elena in her coffin to the Salvatore crypt. They have to seal it shut so that no vampire comes looking for Elena for the cure to vampirism. When they place the coffin in the Salvatore crypt, the realization that he has to spend next sixty years of his life without Elena finally hits Damon. Stefan leaves the crypt so that Damon can say goodbye to Elena. Elena being proud of Damon's decision In Elena's mind, Damon tells Elena that she could have told him what to do but Elena says she already knew what he would do. Damon asks if she knew that the selfish Damon would give up the love of his life to save her best friend. But Elena answers that she knew that the love of her life will stand by his best friend even though he will have to live without her for a while. She kisses him to reassure him that he did the right thing but he still looks devastated. He says that without her, everything will be dull. He says that he was thinking of doing the starvation diet as desiccation makes time go faster. Elena objects saying that this isn't going to work if he will just shut down. She tells him to live his life, enjoy himself and be happy. She then finally accepts his offer to dance. Elena and Damon dancing They start their dance just like the way they did it during the first time they danced together during the Mystic Falls Pageant, at first they nearly touch their hands and then join them together. Damon places her hand on his shoulder and they start twirling. Elena puts her head on his shoulder and starts crying when Damon is not looking at her. She caresses his hair and tries to comfort him. The scene then shifts to Stefan visiting Caroline at her house. He is there to tell her how he feels for her. He says, "Yesterday, you told me you made a list of all the ways that loving me has ruined your life and I get it. I haven't made it easy on you. But I made a list too, of all the ways that loving you has changed mine. You were by my side when I needed a friend. You made me laugh. You made me dance. You told me that I would find love again and I understand if you need time to heal and to live your life without me. And I understand if I have to wait for you and I will, I'll wait. Elena and Damon's goodbye kiss. And when you're ready for me, I will be ready for you." As Stefan says this, the scene keeps switching between two couples, paralleling Stefan's confession to Caroline to Damon and Elena as well. They continue dancing for sometime and in the end, Damon lifts Elena up. He slowly lets her down and Elena asks him if he is ready for this. Damon sadly says he is never going to be ready to spend the next sixty years of his life without her.
