Darkness in the Light Destiny 2 Guide – Malfeasance Exotic

If you’ve had your eyes set on any particular Exotic in Destiny 2, you’ll know that unless it’s something like Devil’s Ruin, you probably have a fair amount of questing to get through.

Whether it’s killing something or someone in a certain way, Exotics are known for being a little tricky to pick up. Here’s our Darkness in the Light Destiny 2 guide if you’re chasing the Malfeasance hand cannon.

Update 8/24/21: During the Destiny 2 2021 Livestream, we got our first proper look at the next expansion, The Witch Queen. Here’s a rundown of what was shown!

What exotic comes from darkness in the Light?

Malfeasance is an Exotic hand cannon that does Kinetic damage. It’s coveted because of something called Explosive Shadow – this weapon will shoot out tainted slugs which bury themselves in your enemies, and stacking enough of these slugs will make them explode.

Now, that’s an incredibly messy end for someone that you don’t like. The weapon is incredibly stable, and can fire 180 rounds per minute. It’s not got the largest magazine, but we’re not complaining about the explosive rounds in the slightest.

Darkness in the Light is the name of the Malfeasance Exotic quest chain, which kicks off with an item called The Seething Heart dropping from an Ascendant Primeval in Gambit. You just have to kill regular matches until one spawns and you kill it. You can’t actually start the questline until this happens. Here are the steps outlined briefly below for you once you’ve got The Seething Heart in hand:

  • The Seething Heart – bring the Seething Heart back to the Drifter
  • City of Secrets – kill 25 Taken bosses or minibosses in search of clues in the Dreaming City
  • The Corrupted – finish the mission The Corrupted by completing the strike
  • The Depleted Weapon Core – bring the Depleted Weapon Core to the Drifter
  • Business As Usual – deposit motes in Gambit and win 10 Gambit matches
  • Lights Out – either kill 4 enemy Guardians in 1 invasion 3 times, or down 4 opponents as an invader before killing 25 opposing Guardians in Gambit
  • Dark Weapon Core – return to the Drifter in the Tower

Once you conclude the final steps, you’ll have completed the Darkness in the Light Destiny 2 quest chain and be able to pick up your completed Malfeasance from The Drifter. Need a hand with anything else in Destiny 2 or about being a Guardian? We’ve put together some guides that we reckon you’re going to find useful:

Darkness In The Light is an exotic quest line obtained through playing games of gambit, and completing nefarious deeds for the “Drifter” character, located in the underbelly of the Tower.

Once completed, you’ll gain access to the exotic hand-cannon Malfeasance, which remains one of the better options for end-game content in its archetype, and deals extremely well with niche activities – such as those involving Taken enemies via the exotic perk “Explosive Shadow”.

Requirements

There are no real requirements to earn Malfeasance. On March 20, 2020, Bungie made the Darkness In The Light quest step available to all guardians, even those who are New Lights, removing the need for the Forsaken expansion. You will however need a fair amount of patience and determination to get through some of the tougher quest steps. Don’t worry, if you’re just starting out or need help with a specific quest step, you are in the right place!

How To Unlock Malfeasance, Step-By-Step

Step 1: The Seething Heart

The first step for Darkness In The Light requires you to enter Gambit, The Drifter’s mash-up of PvE and PvP style game mode. This step can take some time, so be patient and strap in. It is advisable to pick up some bounties and work on your weekly pinnacle gear while completing this step, to make the grind a little less painful.

The Drifter Destiny 2 900p

You’ll need to collect a Seething Heart which, when brought to The Drifter, will begin the questline to obtain Malfeasance. This item is dropped specifically by the Ascendant Primeval Servitor boss in Gambit, which has a random chance to spawn when summoning a Primeval for your team. Thankfully the spawn chance has been dramatically increased over the last few years, so keep at it!

Step 2: City of Secrets

Objective: Taken Bosses or Minibosses Defeated x/25

For this step, we’ll need to head to the Dreaming City and slay several Taken bosses and/or minibosses. There are a few ways we can go about this, and depending on what the featured boss-of-the-week is for The Blind Well, can be completed in under half an hour.

Pro Tip: Within the Dreaming City lies a unique dungeon named “The Shattered Throne”. Start the encounter, once the first enemies spawn you will notice a yellow bar “Labyrinth Architect” – kill it. Once slain, you can collect some ammo and jump off the side of the map. Your checkpoint will conveniently spawn you in front of the Labyrinth Architect, enabling you to farm this specific enemy until your objective is complete.

Step 4: Depleted Weapon Core

Objective: Deliver the depleted Weapon Core you found at Callum’s grave to The Drifter

Simple enough here, just leave the strike and return to The Drifter with the weapon core, and you’ll accept the next section of the quest!

Step 4: The Corrupted

Objective: Help The Drifter track the thief who stole from him

For the next part of this quest, we’ll be heading back to the Dreaming City to complete “The Corrupted” strike. This strike was originally unlocked after the world’s first completion of The Last Wish and holds some incredible lore involving Shin Malphur (The man with the golden gun), and Callum Sol. We won’t spoil it for you, but if this is your first completion, have your dialogue turned up!

Pro Tip: This strike is no longer the challenge it once was, with the soft cap remaining at 1350; However it is worth bringing along a few friends as some parts of the strike are still challenging for solo guardians. The Destiny App ‘Fireteam’ section will help you find a few guardians looking to run the strike!

Step 5: Business As Usual

Objective: Deposit Motes. Dropped Motes subtract x2 score. Win Gambit Matches

We’ll be heading back into Gambit for this objective which on paper is fairly straightforward. You will need to deposit 400 Motes and win 10 games overall to move on to the next step. Keep in mind, losing motes subtracts twice the amount of motes you lose – so be careful if you’re sitting on 15 motes as death here could lose you 30 score, almost 10% of your completion!

Pro Tip: The mission will not complete until both objectives are listed as 100%. Make sure you do not sit on too many motes and try to deposit as you reach 10-15. You’ll also need to focus on winning matches, so as before, bring a few friends if you can!

Step 6: Lights Out

Objective: Have an ally invader defeat four opposing Guardians in a single invasion three times, OR defeat four opposing Guardians as an invader. As an invader, defeat 25 opposing Guardians in Gambit

This is a tricky one, but it’s the last step of the Darkness In The Light exotic quest so stick with it! You will need to either invade the enemy team within a gambit match and rapidly defeat four Guardians or have one of your teammates do the same, either will count. You will also need to defeat 25 Guardians while invading, which should be completed while you are attempting to rapidly defeat four Guardians.

Pro Tip: Roaming Supers and Heavy. Throw on your best multi-kill super and your best Rocket Launcher – preferably with tracking. This will take some time, and not every scenario will allow for an entire team wipe, so be patient. Try to bring some long-range weaponry, so you can pick them off from afar. Remember, the enemy team can not see your location as an invader.

Step 7: Dark Weapon Core

Objective: Speak to the Drifter at the Tower

Congratulations, you did it! We knew you could. You are now the proud owner of Malfeasance. The exotic perk, “Explosive Shadow” creates an explosion when players shoot the same target multiple times, stacking up to 5 – the exciting part is this works for teammates too. It also deals increased damage to Taken enemies and invading Guardians in Gambit.

That is how to complete The Darkness In The Light exotic quest for Destiny 2, and receive the Malfeasance hand cannon which still shines bright in today’s meta. We hope to have helped you on your journey to becoming legend, and with many more exotic quests on the horizon in Destiny 2: Witch Queen, keep your eyes peeled to Blueberries.gg!

Destiny 2: Witch Queen is available now on Xbox, PC, and Playstation!

Can you still get malfeasance 2022?

Malfeasance is an Exotic Hand Cannon in Destiny 2 that is an excellent weapon for players that enjoy Gambit. The weapon deals increased damage to Taken enemies and other Guardians in the game mode. Previously, this Exotic was locked behind the purchase of the Forsaken DLC, but now anyone can obtain Malfeasance.
