Rating: 4.5 stars

This is my favorite of all the classics. It is such a amazing story. I am not the biggest fan of the children's version, because I feel as though it cuts out all the good parts. I didn't like how it kept saying the whole " tell me another story, of course i will", I just skipped those for the most part. It was repetitive, which I didn't feel that way in the original.

Everyone needs to read this one though !

First of all this book is the kind of book that has many little stories in it. I really liked all of them. I especially liked "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves". The characters were somewhat descriptive. The character Ali Baba was really smart and wise. For example, when he saw the secret cave with bags of gold, he took one bag. Also, his wife was very smart too. They "owners" also known as the thieves, tracked Ali Baba down, and put a white mark on their house. Ali Baba's wife got worried they had found out, so she put a white mark on every house near theirs'. They, as a team, went together and finally won. As in, when they got caught, they didn't let down. They fought through and killed the "owners". The other stories were almost as exciting as this one. But, in my opinion, this one was the best. This was a very exciting and adventurous book. I think anyone would love this book. Overall, the books inside the book was great. ...more

This was a wonderful collection of illustrated stories retold from 1001 Arabian Nights. It's perfect for younger readers and can easily be used as a springboard to enjoying the full classic version in the future. It wasn't as enchanting as I thought it would be. I was expecting enchanting and unique words, because this story supposed to set in the middle east. But it was pretty normal, it doesn't arouse my imagination at all, maybe because it was a children's book so they rephrase it. And there's no backstory (other that in the prolouge and epilogue) or any real relationship between the characters. And it ended suddenly... So overall I think it was ok, but I didn't really liked it.

It's so hard for me to remember the name of the queen, Scheherazade! =)
According to my poor english, I try to read a children book, and Arabian nights one of it..
I'm really fall in love with this book, how Scheherazade tell the story make me want to know more (and now I feel like I'm the King Shahryar either Dinarzard)

Oct 03, 2018 Sheri rated it liked it

Since this tale is such a classic, allusions to it abound. I figured it would make for good literary background for my kids. While they got really annoyed with the repetitive beginning to each story, the tales themselves were interesting. We found the Sinbad stories to be so ridiculous and hilarious (and formulaic) that we made our own.

The stories are long, boring, and confusing. Unnecessary stories within stories within the story. Constant breaks as the night ends and a new night begins. One set of stories is simply a bad retelling of The Odyssey. Magic, demons, and a god who is not The God. Rarely kept my kid's interest, and by the end I wasn't interested either. Even though nearly all American children have been exposed to some of the stories in the collection of Arabic folk tales called “A Thousand and One Nights” or simply “Arabian Nights,” the vast majority are unaware of the origin. The movies and cartoons about Aladdin, Sinbad the Sailor and Ali Baba and the Forty thieves are all stories from this great work. This book contains some of the stories from that collection and is written at the level of the young adult.

This is a great introduction to one of the most underappreciated works of fiction ever created. In my opinion, “A Thousand and One Nights” is one of the few works of fiction that can top “Alice in Wonderland” in terms of the sheer creativity and imagination contained in the pages. I have read the full editions of both and strongly recommend that all forms, from cartoon, to comic book to complete edition be read or viewed. Even the simplest of exposures will improve the mental state of the person doing the reading.

Read it to introduce the Arabian nights stories to my boys but I would like to read them other versions now. The stories are wonderful and the boys loved them. I didn't really enjoy reading outloud the simplified language and I skipped most of the repetitive intros and conclusions if I was reading through a few nights in one sitting. Apparently, I never realized that some of our best known tales come from Arabian nights. And I never knew of Sinbad the Sailor at all, till I heard him referenced in Monte Cristo. Great stories. Short reads. Would work for a bedtime reader.

This book can get tedious to read at times, especially the end of each night where it says the same thing over and over again. And the only two stories I really liked from here are Ali Bua and the Forty Thieves and Aladdin. However if you are looking for an abridged version this is good for that.

I just can’t get into these fairy tales. But I’ll let my child come to her own conclusion as this is a read for school.

What grade level is Arabian Nights?

Not a bad introduction to the classic, but it's really dumbed down for kids and in my opinion, loses too much of the entertaining detail.

That said, it definitely kept my 6 year old's attention and interest -- we never ended a reading without him asking for "just one more!"
