If like us you can't wait for the new movie, you might might want a little refresher on what happened on very last episode of Downton, which aired on Christmas Day 2015:

A lot went down on Downton Abbey's last ever episode.

Lady Mary revealed she was pregnant with her second husband Henry’s baby.

Lady Edith finally found her happily-ever-aftr when she married Bertie Pelham, becoming a family of three with her illegitimate daughter Marigold.

Our favourite Downton couple Anna and Bates finally had a baby boy.

Daisy developed feelings for footman Andy and then went off to live on the farm inherited from her first husband William.

Above stairs Countess Grantham and Isobel discussed the future and how they wished things could stay the same.

What will happen on the Downton Abbey film?

The movie will revolve around a royal visit from King George V and Queen Mary.

It will follow on a year from when the TV show ended and pick up in 1927.

With the Great Depression looming the Crawleys are having to tighten their belts - and see their army of servants reduced.

The movie will see Carson the butler, played by Jim Carter, summoned out of retirement by Lady Mary to try to restore glory to Downton as they prepare for their royal visit.

The film will also see Lady Mary considering whether to leave the estate forever - however, her trusty maid and confidant Anna Bates is on hand to attempt to sway her to stay.

Downstairs the servants are just as excited for the King George's visit with cook Beryl Patmore starting her preparations.

But their feathers are ruffled as the royal household takes over, so the Downton staff stage a comeback.

Meanwhile, Branson gets a new love interest and the Dowager Countess is also back with lots of witty one-liners.

Are there any big differences between Downtown Abbey the TV series and the film?

According to the reviews, the film is very similar to the TV show.

However, Jim Carter, who plays Carson, has revealed that the film will see the female characters become more liberated as times change.

He said: “We’ve been edging towards that with Daisy becoming more emancipated, an education.

“And Anna’s always been strong – she comes on powerfully in the film which is great, it’s good to see.

“The First World War changed everything… People quite rightly started saying, ‘Hang on a minute, do we have to accept the status quo?’

Composer John Lunn - who is behind the music for the TV show - has also provided the score for the movie.

Lunn won two Emmy Awards for his music for Downton Abbey, and in a statement revealing his return he said: “At first it was like discovering a long-lost friend, but gradually I realised that we’d never really been apart; by the end it was just such a joy to revisit this material and have the opportunity to take it to a whole new level.”
