What happens at the end of Raising Dion season 2

Raising Dion season two spoilers follow.

Season two of Raising Dion is finally here. Eight supernaturally-stuffed episodes. It only took two-and-a-bit years but fans are finally getting some of their most burning questions answered. Like would Pat (Jason Ritter) return? Would the mother and son duo forgive him for attempting to murder Dion and killing Mark? He was technically under the influence of evil, after all.

This season of Dennis Liu's comic-book adaptation saw a slew of new cast members. Joining Alisha Wainwright as Nicole Warren and Ja'Siah Young as Dion Warren are How to Get Away with Murder star Rome Flynn, Aubriana Davis and Josh Ventura.

As the show loves to remind us, 'energy never dies'. So how did Pat return? Is he friend or foe to Crooked Brayden? Will Nicole and Dion finally be reunited with Mark?

Now we know.

Raising Dion Ending Explained

It seems creator Carol Barbee was having a lot of fun when it came to writing this second instalment of Raising Dion, because boy was it wild. Romance, redemption, manipulation, mind control and grotesque monsters birthed from the spores of evil-poisoned flowers. Let's get stuck in.

We pick up with Nicole and Dion two years post-Pat's defeat and their lives have clearly been altered by their experiences. While Dion thrives by delving deeper into exploring his powers with training at Biona, Nicole becomes even more fiercely protective.

She heeds Mark's warning that "energy never dies, it just takes a different form" and knows that the Crooked Man could still come back. As such she finds herself working at research facility Biona (where this all started) as a collaborator, tackling the problem from the inside out.

Dion pushes and bucks against her tight constraints, desperate to grow, which frustrates Nicole, who just wants to keep him safe. Though he plays by most of her rules he still attempts to fight small neighbourhood injustices as 'The Mind Mover' with his best friends Invisible Girl aka Esperanza (Sammi Haney) and Admiral Annihilation aka Jonathan King (Gavin Munn) more formally known as the Triangle of Justice. So much cuteness.

Meanwhile the crooked energy is up to its old tricks, manipulating and coercing a vulnerable Brayden into helping track down and kill Dion. Why does he have such a deep bloodlust for the kid? Well, a returning Pat explains that when the crooked energy was inside him it viewed Dion as a potential threat that could end him (more on Pat later).

When Brayden finally befriends Dion while masquerading as the new kid at school, the crooked energy seizes the opportunity to pounce. However it realises it doesn't have enough power to do the job. As any dedicated villain would do, he persuades Brayden to help it amass the power it needs to get strong.

Together they infect the sinkhole on Dion's school playground, which happened to be an old Civil War battleground. The bad energy from the war is imbued into the plant life underground so that anyone who comes into contact with it becomes a mindless, contagious plant monster. These monsters can infect others in close contact.

Having spent so much time with the crooked energy, Pat knows something is up. It turns out he's been living the hermit life after being separated from the evil energy. (By 'separated' we mean his body's molecules were torn apart in death and then reformed.) Full of shame and remorse, the only reason he returns is to alert Biona of the crooked energy's existence and to help stop the threat.

Head of Biona Suzanne Wu is reluctant to trust him and locks him up for good measure subjecting him to numerous tests to prove he's not powered. However, her second-in-command David Marsh (Josh Ventura) doesn't feel as strongly.

After discovering (unbeknown to Pat) that he does in fact have some residual electrical power, David updates Pat on his powered status and breaks him out to investigate the sinkhole. For the goodness of mankind? Absolutely not. Untrustworthy David is looking for a way to monetise powered people and he sees Pat as his ticket to financial gain.

Over the two years, Biona has also become a training ground for powered people. Teenager Janelle Carr (Aubriana Davis) is one of the powered individuals temporarily residing there as she struggles to understand and control her seemingly volatile, combustive power.

Also working there is Dion's new powered trainer Tevin Wakefield. Tevin's power of putting up physical, protective walls is no barrier to the blossoming romance between him and Nicole. "What about Mark?" you scream. It seems he does not get to enjoy reincarnation, that was a treat just reserved for Pat.

Nicole and Tevin's relationship barely gets off the ground however before she is infected by a monster at the sinkhole.

Nicole discovers she is dying and, much to her initial aversion, accepts Pat's help in curing her. Pat learns that powered people have three strands in their DNA instead of two. He can use the third strand from powered DNA samples to create an antidote, if only he could extract it. Enter Janelle.

Her power turns out not to be explosive but rather the ability to break things down to their simplest form, thus allowing her to acquire the third strand. Lucky this teen knows her science. It works but, though it stops the contagion, the antidote is killing Nicole slowly.

Having done his job – and poorly by Suzanne's standard – Pat is locked away. Furious that his good deeds aren't recognised, he manages to steal a vial of mixed powers from his experiments and injects the supernatural cocktail into himself.

It brings him near death but it works. He is back, powered and stronger than ever. Biona baddy David Marsh realises the same can be replicated in others and takes this proposal to the board who shut him down unceremoniously. Burn. The collective snubbing of both later leads to a very dangerous partnership.

Crooked Brayden is all fuelled up thanks to the contagion. He temporarily managed to befriend Dion but uses his mind manipulation on others in a way that freaks the poor boy out. Dion distances himself from Brayden but it no longer matters to the crooked energy, who doesn't need to keep the mind mover close anymore as it has enough power to defeat him.

In a battle to rival all battles – at least in Dion's world – Dion, Nicole, Tevin and Janelle face off against Crooked Brayden and his army of plant monsters at the sinkhole. Despite an impressive powered assault against their enemies, it is Nicole who is most effective. Echoing Tevin's earlier sentiments to Dion, "Not all superpowers are supernatural."

Nicole manages to appeal to Brayden, recognising his pain from losing his parents and the loneliness he feels, all the insecurities the crooked energy has used to isolate him. She makes him feel worthy and redeemable and Brayden is able to take back control of his body.

Without its host, the crooked energy shrinks into the sinkhole to make more flowers that will infect more people. Nicole realises that the serum, the last dose keeping her alive for moments longer, is the key to destroying the nest as the serum makes the infection destroy itself.

After an emotional exchange with her son Nicole agrees to let Dion teleport into the sinkhole to inject it with the serum knowing that she can't reach it. The task almost finishes Dion off as the vines curl around his legs but he triumphs as all heroes must.

They appear to have defeated the crooked energy. Yes, appear, because the crooked energy slinks off to its old host, Pat.

A rebuffed Pat welcomes the energy – "Hello, old friend." – with David in tow, who seduces him by dangling the future possibility of building an army.

The union of the crooked energy, Pat and dastardly, immoral David Marsh should make for an interesting season three...

Will Raising Dion have a season 3?

There will not be a third season of Raising Dion. Series star Sammi Haney, who played Esperanza on the Michael B. Jordan-produced superhero drama, revealed the news Tuesday on Instagram and it was confirmed by Netflix. “Sad to say that Raising Dion is CANCELED [sic],” Haney wrote.

Why is there no season 3 of Raising Dion?

Netflix has remained tight-lipped about its decision to axe Raising Dion, but money troubles could be the root cause of the show's premature end. The plummeting of Netflix's stocks thanks to the loss of 200,000 subscribers led to further heartbreaks as investors withdrew $1.1 billion of their backing.
