  3. WD: what's the difference between the My Book and My Cloud?

Sephiroth311 5 years ago#1

I've filled up the space on my Mac with music and ripped dvds, I want to transfer the entire iTunes library to an external hard drive and then be able to add to it and stream through Apple TV. I figure to finish ripping my collection I'll need at least 4TB

Which one do I want? The My Book or My Cloud? It would be nice to access my videos on the go if that's what My Cloud does but it's very rare that I'll need to while I stream to Apple TV every day so I don't want anything to hinder that

My Cloud seems to be wireless, and My Book seems to require a cable connected to your computer. Otherwise they look the same.

Close but not quite

MyCloud has an Ethernet port so you can connect it to your network and use it like a NAS

MyBook does not and can only be connected by USB... but some routers with USB ports let you use it like a NAS anyway.

MyCloud would be more versatile, especially if you have other devices on your network that you would like to access your music and movies. With the MyBook you could always create a network share, but then you'd have to always leave the computer it's connected to on whereas the MyCloud would be connected directly to your router and not require a dedicated computer to serve files.

MyCloud would get my vote for your usage. Instead of connecting it directly to your computer, you'd connect it to your network and then everything would access that. As the above user said, if you want to have access from multiple devices without having your computer on, you'd need the MyCloud.

So the My Cloud just connects to my router while the My Book connects direct to the computer?

Would having everything stored wirelessly cause any problems with Apple TV though? All my media is done through iTunes and I don't really want that to change

I think I've answered my own question here:

Basically if I move my iTunes folder to the My Cloud and keep my IMac switched on all the time (which i do anyway) I won't have any problems? Or is it easier to just get a My Book? I don't want to lose all my iTunes metadata every time I switch off or anything like that

> I don't want to lose all my iTunes metadata every time I switch off or anything like that

the iTunes metadata is stored on your Mac regardless of whether or not a media file in your iTunes library is stored locally on your machine or off on your network

Does WD My Book have cloud storage?

WD My Book Live 2TB Personal Cloud Storage NAS Share Files and Photos.

Is WD My Cloud discontinued?

After Jan. 15, 2022, remote access, security updates and technical support will no longer be available for My Cloud OS 3. For customers with only My Cloud OS 3-compatible devices, Western Digital plans to end all support for prior generations on April 15, 2022.

What is the difference between My Cloud and My Cloud Home?

MY Cloud is just an external drive like a USB drive. My Cloud Home is a server that attaches to your router and will store pictures and videos and allow them to be on your network and if your savvy enough you can open a port on your router and access it from outside your network.

Can you use WD My Cloud as an external hard drive?

No you cannot reformat and use the My Cloud as a plain dumb external USB hard drive. The USB port on the My Cloud is host mode only, meaning you can only attach external USB drives too it. If you don't want to use the WD software, then don't. You can access the My Cloud using Windows File Explorer or Mac Finder.
