- WD: what's the difference between the My Book and My Cloud?
Sephiroth311 5 years ago#1 I've filled up the space on my Mac with music and ripped dvds, I want to transfer the entire iTunes library to an external hard drive and then be able to add to it and stream through Apple TV. I figure to finish ripping my collection I'll need at least 4TB Which one do I want? The My Book or My Cloud? It would be nice to access my videos on the go if that's what My Cloud does but it's very rare that I'll need to while I stream to Apple TV every day so I don't want anything to hinder that Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast! |

Death_Born 5 years ago#4 My Cloud seems to be wireless, and My Book seems to require a cable connected to your computer. Otherwise they look the same. |
Snickleseed 5 years ago#5 Death_Born posted... My Cloud seems to be wireless, and My Book seems to require a cable connected to your computer. Otherwise they look the same. Close but not quite MyCloud has an Ethernet port so you can connect it to your network and use it like a NAS MyBook does not and can only be connected by USB... but some routers with USB ports let you use it like a NAS anyway. O.P.A.P. |
Ciera 5 years ago#6 MyCloud would be more versatile, especially if you have other devices on your network that you would like to access your music and movies. With the MyBook you could always create a network share, but then you'd have to always leave the computer it's connected to on whereas the MyCloud would be connected directly to your router and not require a dedicated computer to serve files. I'll... shave that cat. |
reincarnator07 5 years ago#7 MyCloud would get my vote for your usage. Instead of connecting it directly to your computer, you'd connect it to your network and then everything would access that. As the above user said, if you want to have access from multiple devices without having your computer on, you'd need the MyCloud. Fan of metal? Don't mind covers? Check out my youtube and give me some feedback |
Sephiroth311 (Topic Creator)5 years ago#8 So the My Cloud just connects to my router while the My Book connects direct to the computer? Would having everything stored wirelessly cause any problems with Apple TV though? All my media is done through iTunes and I don't really want that to change Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast! |
Sephiroth311 (Topic Creator)5 years ago#9 I think I've answered my own question here: //m.youtube.com/watch?v=nvpoVUYZ0X4 Basically if I move my iTunes folder to the My Cloud and keep my IMac switched on all the time (which i do anyway) I won't have any problems? Or is it easier to just get a My Book? I don't want to lose all my iTunes metadata every time I switch off or anything like that Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast! |
Ciera 5 years ago#10 > I don't want to lose all my iTunes metadata every time I switch off or anything like that the iTunes metadata is stored on your Mac regardless of whether or not a media file in your iTunes library is stored locally on your machine or off on your network I'll... shave that cat. |
