Jan 10, 2006 Does anyone know what type of Tenor Mouthpiece Jeff Coffin plays on? -Darkstar Joined Feb 3, 2003 · 1,466 Posts
According to Jeff's website it's a Freddie Gregory Custom HR. You could go to www.jeffcoffin.com and ask on his forum for additional details. Joined Apr 13, 2003 · 3,419 Posts
It is indeed a Gregory. I don't know the exact tip opening, but he let me try it and it was stuffy to me, so I assume it's probably around a .105. Certainly isn't stuffy for him, though. Joined Feb 3, 2003
I want to know not only what brand but how big of tip opening it has, whether or not it has baffle, etc.

In the "Live at the Quick" DVD it looks like he's playing a Barone of some sort. I could be wrong though.

According to Phil, Jeff used to play a Barone Hollywood, according to other sources, he played a Barone Contemporary. Either way, he got a great sound out of it.

His soprano piece is the killer. It's a Theo piece and everybody who plays it wants one.

Thanks, I'm a big Jeff Coffin fan and was curious about what he played on.

In last August's Downbeat p. 89 it says this: "Jeff Coffin chooses setups that give him the most flexibility on each horn. On alto, Coffin uses a Vandoren V-16 hard-rubber mouthpiece, either an 8 or a 9. The 8 has rich harmonics and allows him to do his double-horn nod to Rahsaan Roland Kirk. The 9 produces a bigger sound because of its large
chamber.
But here's the crazy part: He has been using Vandoren Java 3 1/2 tenor reed on alto for the last 15 years. 'The freedom of the response is staggering,' said Coffin, a Vandoren endorser. On tenor, Coffin uses Vandoren ZZ 3 1/2 reeds on a hard-rubber Freddie Gregory customized mouthpiece (an 8-star equivalent). For bari, his setup includes a hard-ruber Berg Larsen 120/0 and Vandoren #3 reeds. On sorano, Coffin uses a Theo Wanne mouthpice (a customized old Selmer C-star that's been
opened up) and traditional Vandoren #3 reeds-a combination that gives him a dark, rich tone. Coffin prefers Vandoren's Optimum mouthpice ligatures with multiple interchaneable contact plates for the freedom of vibration they provide. 'Where the ligature touches the reed, it's not smothering it,' he said. 'It makes a huge difference.'"

Wow, Tenor reeds on Alto, that's crazy! Thanks for the info.
