What song did Carrie Underwood and Vince Gill sing together?

Country music giant Carrie Underwood honored a fellow Oklahoma singing legend with an emotional performance that had everyone fighting back tears.

Stars showed up and showed out for another installation of CMT Giants that honored "Whenever You Come Around" singer Vince Gill. The 90-minute star-studded event featured appearances from Chris Stapleton, Cody Johnson, Keith Urban, Reba McEntire, Sting, and of course, the "Cowboy Casanova" singer herself.

When the American Idol alum took to the stage, there wasn't a single dry eye in the building.

Carrie performed an emotional rendition of Gill's "Go Rest High On That Mountain" in a sparkling baby blue gown reminiscent of a real-life Cinderella. Accompanied by a chorus of backup vocalists, as soon as Carrie sung the first note, the audience was captivated. And yes, she did indeed bring Vince Gill himself to tears during her performance of the 1994 hit song.

Toward the end of Carrie's performance, the singer struggled to hold back tears of her own as she received a standing ovation from the audience.

Fans in Carrie's comment section immediately ran to the star's Instagram to share what they really thought about the special moment:

  • "The perfect person to sing and honor this song."
  • "Gorgeous! If that performance doesn’t bring you to tears I don’t know what will. ❤️"
  • "She is on another level vocally! No other female in country comes close. Hands down one of the best! 🙌"
  • "@carrieunderwood you’re truly incredible! Even @vincegillofficial can’t hold his tears back! 🙏🏻 incredible"

In a pre-show interview on the CMT Giants red carpet, the "Denim & Rhinestones" singer admitted that she was assigned to sing "Go Rest High On That Mountain." "I probably would've picked it for myself, but it's also really hard when you're in a situation like this with other artist and be like 'No I want that one,'" she joked.

Clearly someone knew what they were doing when they gave that emotional gospel ballad to Carrie because it was easily one of the highlights of the night.

Carrie Underwood sings a heartfelt rendition of ‘Go Rest High On That Mountain’ in honor of Vince Gill.

‘Go Rest High On That Mountain’ was made famous by Vince back in the 1990s. He started writing the song back in 1989 after the death of fellow country artist Keith Whitley.

Despite being inspired to write down the lyrics, it would take years before Vince was able to finally finish the special tune. Once the song was released, it quickly climbed to the top of the music charts.

‘Go Rest High On That Mountain’ went on to win 2 Grammy awards and the Country Music Association's Song of the Year award in 1996. Over the years, the lyrics of the song have provided peace and comfort to many hearts around the world.

“Go rest high on that mountain
Son, your work on earth is done.
Go to heaven a-shoutin'
Love for the Father and the Son.”

Today, Carrie Underwood is putting her own spin on this Vince Gill classic for the CMT Giants special.

Carrie became a household name after winning the fourth season of American Idol back in 2005. She won over the hearts of America with covers of songs such as Bonnie Raitt's ‘I Can't Make You Love Me’ and ‘Bless The Broken Road’ from Rascal Flatts.

After her win, she quickly climbed the country charts and made a solid name for herself in the country music world. It’s been 16 years since that momentous audition and Carrie is still using her gift to touch our hearts.

Carrie Underwood was among the many top country artists who took the stage to perform tributes to Vince Gill during a CMT Giants episode devoted to the Country Music Hall of Famer. Underwood delivered a powerhouse rendition of "Go Rest High on That Mountain" that left Gill visibly emotional.

Underwood hits the stage in a long, soft blue gown, with a single spotlight illuminating her as she begins to sing the song of loss, faith and ultimate redemption. She gives an understated, restrained vocal performance in the opening verse, building to a massive emotional payoff as she sweeps into a dramatic vocal reading of the chorus.

She continues to build throughout the song, and she includes the new final verse that Gill introduced in 2019, creating a stunningly cathartic climax that had a moist-eyed Gill bringing his hand to his face.

Underwood's masterful performance earned a standing ovation from the crowd, led by Gill himself:

Gill began writing "Go Rest High on That Mountain" after Keith Whitley's death from alcohol poisoning in 1989. Four years later, Gill's older brother, Bob, died after suffering a heart attack, and Gill revived the song, writing the chorus and a second verse. The song reached No. 14, and it went on to win CMA and Grammy Awards. It's since become one of Gill's most iconic songs.

CMT Giants: Vince Gill taped at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Belmont University in Nashville on Sept. 12. The show aired on CMT on Friday night (Sept. 16). Brad Paisley, Cody Johnson, Sting, Chris Stapleton and more are among the other artists who turned up to honor Gill.
