When did Red Hot Chili Peppers play Lollapalooza Chicago?

LCD Soundsystem, J. Cole, Lana Del Rey, Future to also appear at Chicago music festival

Radiohead, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and LCD Soundsystem are set to headline this year’s Lollapalooza Festival, which will take place in Chicago’s Grant Park this summer. The 2016 dates are July 28th-July 31st, expanding the typically three-day festival into a four-day one in honor of its 25th anniversary.

J. Cole, Lana Del Rey, Future, Ellie Goulding, Disclosure, Major Lazer, Jane’s Addiction, Haim, Flume, the 1975, M83, Halsey, Chris Stapleton, Bloc Party, Vince Staples and A$AP Ferg have also been added to the lineup. A complete lineup is below.

Tickets for the festival will go on sale at 10 a.m. CST at the festival’s official site.

Last year’s Lollapalooza featured headlining sets from Paul McCartney and Metallica. A diverse collection of artists, including the Weeknd, Charli XCX, Sam Smith, Tyler the Creator, Alesso and Brand New also took over the Chicago park for the weekend.

Radiohead’s Lollapalooza gig comes on the heels of the band announcing their first U.S. concerts in four years. The band will perform at Madison Square Garden on July 26th and 27th and will perform at Montreal’s Osheaga’s Music and Arts Festival the same weekend as Lollapalooza. In early June, Radiohead will perform their new album — and long-awaited follow-up to 2011’s King of Limbs — at Spain’s Primavera Sound. No release date for the as-yet-untitled album has been revealed yet.

The Chili Peppers are also planning their follow-up to their 2011 album, I’m With You. The band joined Bruno Mars at the Super Bowl in 2014 before wrapping a tour together that summer. So far this year, they’ve been busy supporting Bernie Sanders and his bid for the Democratic nomination for president.

LCD Soundsystem will reunite for the first time since the band’s 2011 farewell show at Madison Square Garden at Coachella in April. The dance-rock group will play Bonnaroo in June then NYC’s newest festival, Panorama, in July.

Following The Strokes’ 2010 comeback concert and Foo Fighters’ legendary 2011 set, the Chili Peppers’ Lollapalooza show saw Anthony Kiedis, Flea, Chad Smith and John Frusciante hit the stage in support of their ninth album Arcadium, where they rocked out for a 17-song set which included classic hits ‘Give It Away’, ‘Scar Tissue’, ‘Can’t Stop’, and ‘By The Way’.

Punters at the time were also lucky enough to catch a cover of ‘For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her’ by Simon & Garfunkel.

The Lollapalooza performance was it marked John Frusciante’s final tour group before he was replaced a year later by Josh Klinghoffer, though he’s since reunited with the Chili Peppers as they work on a follow-up album to 2016’s The Getaway.

The band announced Frusciante’s return in December last year over social media, while simultaneously announcing the departure of Klinghoffer.

“The Red Hot Chili Peppers announce that we are parting ways with our guitarist of the past ten years, Josh Klinghoffer,” they explained. “Josh is a beautiful musician who we respect and love. We are deeply grateful for our time with him, and the countless gifts he shared with us,” they wrote.

“We also announce, with great excitement and full hearts, that John Frusciante is rejoining our group.”
