Struggling since the death of his firefighter dad years ago, a tattoo artist's directionless life derails when his mom begins dating another fireman.

Starring:Pete Davidson, Marisa Tomei, Bill Burr

The King of Staten Island is a 2020 American comedy-drama film directed by Judd Apatow, from a screenplay by Apatow, Pete Davidson, and Dave Sirus. It stars Davidson, Marisa Tomei, Bill Burr, Bel Powley, Maude Apatow, and Steve Buscemi, and follows a young man who must get his life together after his mother starts dating a new man who, like his deceased father, is a firefighter.

In order to understand and appreciate Davidson's performance in this piece some insight regarding this movie is in order; it isn't obvious from watching the trailer or reading the description alone, but Davidson’s father in real life died in real life when he was serving as a firefighter in 9/11. Even more specifically, his father died when he was the same age the main character in this film was when his fictional dad passed away as well. The effect participating in this film had on Davidson is obvious, and this is an almost biographical account of how this loss has and continues to affect him. Scott is “all over the place” for a lack of much better words, and he isn't presented as someone with a cookie-cutter personality that can be gracefully placed inside of a box and secured with a ribbon on top. The parts of Scott that seem messy and incorrigible are balanced with moments where his sincerity and ambition are highlighted the most. On top of this, he also hasn't magically changed by the time the conclusion is reached....but the audience can find comfort in knowing he will eventually get where he desires to be. It is common knowledge that processing grief is never easy and makes the most organized of people lose their way, and I respect ‘The King of Staten Island’ as being a reminder of this truth.

Perhaps most impressively, this film is careful to explore and introduce the multifaceted elements of relationships in Scott’s life that are the most influential without undemeaning the overarching plot. The love he has for his sister is contrasted with moments where they seem to butt heads. The detest he has for Ray (“Mom’s new boyfriend”) is balanced with the times they bond the most over elements and events the audience otherwise may not expect. Scott’s friends - both romantic and casual - are used to provide insight as to how he interacts with the world around him when the fear of being judged is taken out of the equation. To summarize this point: ‘The King of Staten Island’ is a thoughtful reflection of the type of person Scott currently is and Type of person he potentially can be. This makes his character development - both overt and implied - stand out in a way that is both palpable and believable

Perhaps most importantly, the change of tone as scenes develop respects the overall plot without inching into being too serious or not serious enough. I could complain that at times the pacing of these tones sometimes seems rushed, but they are a fair representation of the complicated nature that grief can introduce into someone's life; Some people watching this will cry a lot while others will laugh instead. Regardless of the aftermath, this is sure to compel some empathy and investment out of the least likely of viewers.

TL, DR: A good film for people that are not currently struggling with grief and loss. A great film for people that aren’t as fortunate in this regard.
I would recommend!

Here's where to watch Pete Davidson's The King Of Staten Island online, including whether it's on Netflix, Hulu or Prime. Judd Apatow's early career included a stint as a stand-up comic - where he first met Adam Sandler - and writing on movies such as Celtic Pride or series like The Ben Stiller Show. His work on cult shows like Freaks And Geeks and creating Undeclared also saw him gather a fanbase, but his movie breakthrough came with 2005 comedy The 40-Year-Old Virgin. This Steve Carell comedy - which has an incredible supporting cast that includes Paul Rudd, Jane Lynch and Seth Rogen - was an unexpected smash and led to a run of hit Apatow directed and produced comedies.

Starting with 2009's overlooked Funny People - which reunited him with Sandler and Rogen - Apatow's directorial work has veered towards dramedy. This is true of his 2020 film The King Of Staten Island, a comedy-drama revolving around Saturday Night Live star Pete Davidson. The film is a semi-autobiographical story about Davidson's Scott, an idle, unemployed wannabe tattoo artist who lost his firefighter father at a young age. When Scott's mother Margie (Marisa Tomei) starts dating another firefighter named Ray (Bill Burr), he sets about trying to break them up.

The King Of Staten Island received mostly positive reviews for its performances and Apatow's direction, though, like many of the helmer's work, its long runtime was considered an issue. That said, it's probably the most underrated of his films and showed that Davidson had dramatic chops with the right material and filmmaker. The King Of Staten Island - where many of Davidson's tattoos are real - isn't currently available to stream on Netflix, Hulu or Prime, but according to JustWatch.

Instead, The King Of Staten Island can be watched on Max Go or free - with ads - on Amazon's Freevee channel. The movie is also available to rent or purchase from prices starting from $3.99 on platforms such as Redbox, iTunes, Google Plays Movies, Vudu, Microsoft Store and others. The King Of Staten Island's box office was somewhat affected by its release during the Covid-19 pandemic, with Apatow's most recent film The Bubble focusing on a film crew trying to complete a movie during the pandemic.

While Netflix's The Bubble was something of a return to the comedies of Apatow's early career - including a cast that featured Pedro Pascal and Karen Gillan - it's arguably his worst film to date. The King Of Staten Island remains his best work of recent years and deserves a wider audience.
