So I'm doing the master sword trial and I think I'm on the final stretch. The rest stop gives me 3 hearty bass and I wanna know what the best use of them is. Can I just cook the one hearty bass for full hp and extra hearts? Do I need to mix it with other ingredients? Or is the best use just to cook them all into one dish? Because my thinking is that with my 12 base hearts I won't get one shot by anything and it's better to space out the temporary hearts the hearty bass gives me. Any insight would be appreciated.

Edit: ugh didn't matter cuz I got roasted the very first room with the 6 guardians lol.

I struggled to find a cohesive guide for the best fishing spots in the game, so I decided to make my own as I traveled/googled. Fish are great for cooking high level recipes and some are needed in mass quantities for armor upgrades so hopefully this list of locations/recipes helps some folks. If you know a good fishing spot I didn't mention here, please let me know!

Fishing Spots

Aris Beach southwest of Tuft Mountain has a bokoblin camp over water teeming with mighty and armored porgy. You can easily net 20-30 of each type of fish. Lurelin Village also has several porgy schools around it and these schools sometimes have flocks of seagulls hovering over them. An NPC wants you to clear the enemy camp at Aris Beach so he can go fish there too.

Lake Mekar is the lake surrounding the south side of the Great Hyrule Forest. There are tons of stealthfin trout here especially in the section north of Rauru Hillside. Stealthfin trout glow at night if you have a hard time spotting them.

Rito Village has a few ponds on the raised plateaus leading to the village which have hearty salmon.

Tama Pond just east of Rito Village and south of the Hebra Plunge is home to more hearty salmon & some chillfin trout.

Zora's Domain obviously has tons of fish. There's the bright eyed crabs around the shrine & underneath the domain, with chillfin trout schools around the pillars below as well. The waterfall at the northern end of Zora's Domain has many different kinds of fish swimming around it (hearty bass, armored carp, voltfin trout, etc). You really can't go wrong fishing here to be honest.

Riverside Stable on the banks of Hylia River has lots of staminoka bass swimming in the shallow waters around the stable and at the dock, as well as other types of fish all up and down the river. I found mostly hylian/staminoka/hearty bass around here.

Faron Tower has a small pond directly north of it that holds hearty bass & several octoroks that drop fish.

Sarjon Bridge west of the Faron Tower has waterfalls surrounding it with many hyrule & hearty bass. If you continue down the river you'll find several more of these fish along with a boat you can ride downstream. The bridge you reach near the end of the river has dozens of fireflies at night as well, which are useful for sheikah armor upgrades.

Ubota Point in Faron directly behind the Shai Utoh shrine has a small pond at the top with a metal door submerged in it. If you lift the metal door out of the water around 20 hyrule bass and a few hearty bass will swim up to the top of the pond!

Fish Recipes

Just a few somewhat efficient recipes I've come up with after all this time fishing... I'm sure nobody needs cold/heat/shock resist recipes but these ones might be useful:

Attack Recipes:

  1. 2 Mighty Porgy + 3 (any atk ingredient) = 4:10 full attack up bonus*

  2. 3 Mighty Porgy = 2:30 full attack up bonus, +4<3

Defense Recipes:

  1. 2 Armored Porgy + 3 (any def ingredient) = 4:10 full defense bonus*

  2. 3 Armored Porgy = 2:30 full defense bonus, +4<3

Hearty Recipes:

  1. 2 Hearty Salmon, 3 Durians = full recovery+16

  2. 3 Hearty Bass, 2 Hearty Truffles = full recovery+9

  3. 5 Hearty Bass = full recovery+10

*heart recovery based on variable ingredients

Fishing Methods

There's lots of ways to fish in Breath of the Wild but some are more efficient than others. Here are the best ways I've come up with.

  • Spear fishing is fun because you can practice your aim. Simply use a wooden spear (so it doesn't sink!) to kill your desired fish. This doesn't use weapon durability so I like to keep a spear just for fishing. Throwing a spear at a school of fish will scare them however.

  • The bomb rune is a free way to kill small schools of fish.

  • Shock arrows can take out schools of fish as well, but keep in mind this wastes arrows + weapon durability.

  • Wearing stealthy armor or eating stealth food makes it much harder for fish to detect you, so you can just swim around and collect up a whole school.

And that's all I got for right now. Any feedback or additions would be greatly appreciated!

How do you get a Botw bass?

You can find Hyrule bass in the lake by throwing a bomb into the water. This should send a few fish flying for you to pick them up and hoard them.
