I think that the scuba diving or snorkeling is just the literal part of a song with a lot of depth to it. Show To me, it's talking about feeling a disconnect between body and mind. When the singer says, they are on the ground but their mind is out in the water, they are saying "my body is here on the ground but my mind is on something else". I think they are also questioning what it means to be "conscious", when they say "your head will collapse but there's nothing in it" but not directly. They also go on to talk about thinking a fish is trying to communicate, and to me that is questioning to what degree a fish is conscious. That disconnect between body and mind that I mentioned could be coming from anywhere: Daydreaming, drugs, obsession, being dizzy, remembering the past, feeling like you aren't in control, working in a factory with your body while thinking about something else etc., and I think that's what makes the lyrics of this song hit home for so many people. It really hits home for me anyways because I think about these things a lot. Like everytime i hear it, it just makes me float. what makes it so much better then every other song?? level 1 It’s a very well written song compositionally, it has extremely interesting production that’s wayyyyy ahead of its time(dryness combined with heavy reverb on the backing vocals), the un orthodox vocal delivery from Francis, the catchy lyrics and melody.. It’s devastating yet beautiful at the same time. Also that riff is so infectious but simple. Everything is catchy about that song without sacrificing any edge or atmosphere level 2 It’s the fucking pixies man. They were weird as hell, harsh and aggressive, crazy dynamics, but always catchy as a motherfucker. Absolutely genius band. level 2 Instantly just transports me back into college chilling in the dorm and I just get the feels... level 2 I always thought that song was from the mid 2000's, when I first heard it. I thought it was NEW back then.
level 2 So much of the pixies sounds like it could have been released last year instead of 30 years ago. level 2 I just listened to it again because it's been a while and all I can hear is the drums. Most of the song the drums consist of only the kick on the 1 and 2 beat and the snare on 3. It is amazing. They play the top percussion on a palmed guitar. level 2 I remember when Fight Club came out (that song closes the film) there were a bunch of people buying the soundtrack or Pixies records because of that song. It’s hauntingly beautiful level 1 Because it’s the Pixies. Side note, there’s a chill version of Wave of Mutilation that was on the soundtrack for Pump Up the Volume, it’s worth looking for. level 2 The chord progression is a cycle of naturally resolving notes, so it’s pleasant to hear over and over. Additionally, the vocal melody is exceptionally unique along with the “Ooooh-oooh” background noise. Ultimately all the pieces fit together really well to create an infectiously concise and catchy pop song. level 2 One of the most amazing soundtracks of all time. level 2 Because The Pixies are so damn good. Jesus tapdancing christ, why do people still upvote this shit to the moon every godforsaken week? Looks like tomorrow's forecast is cloudy with a chance of Man of Constant Sorrow on the frontpage for the ten thousandth fucking time too. level 2 Needed to make sure this was posted.
