The Hisense U7G is a great-looking 4K TV with all the technologies and features that any LCD/LED TV should have today, including a full-array local-dimming backlight for superb black levels and image contrast as well as a 120 Hz refresh rate that delivers better motion quality than you’ll find on many competitors. It does a nice job showing high dynamic range video, thanks to its high brightness and rich color, and it supports the more advanced Dolby Vision HDR standard (which can offer improvements in image quality over the standard HDR10 format). For serious gamers, Hisense has also added all the HDMI 2.1 features necessary to take full advantage of the newest gaming consoles. (Check out TV features, defined for more explanation of the technical terms we’re using here.) The U7G features the Android TV streaming platform, which offers a wide variety of streaming services and a continually improving user interface. But the TV comes only in 55-, 65-, and 75-inch screen sizes.

If you’re willing to pay a higher price to get one of the best LCD performers we’ve tested, the Samsung QN90A is our recommendation. Moving beyond the standard LED backlight in the Hisense U7G, this TV has a mini-LED backlighting system—which offers more local-dimming zones for even better contrast ratios and brighter HDR highlights than on the Hisense—and it produces vibrant colors. It also has a wider viewing angle than our top pick, so everyone can enjoy a good-looking image no matter where they sit in the room, and it comes in more screen sizes, from 43 to 98 inches. The QN90A supports all the latest HDMI 2.1 features, which gamers will appreciate, and it uses Samsung’s proprietary Tizen streaming platform, which supports most of the popular streaming services. We like that it features a center stand so it will fit on virtually any TV furniture, and it sits high enough on the stand that you can place a soundbar in front of it without blocking the screen. The drawbacks are that the QN90A does not support the more advanced Dolby Vision high dynamic range format (but it does support the similarly advanced HDR10+ format), and it’s significantly more expensive than the Hisense U7G.

If you have a wider seating area, or if you regularly watch your TV from side angles, the Sony X950H uses an LCD panel specifically designed to produce a better-looking image at wider viewing angles than many 4K LCD TVs offer. (Our upgrade pick, the Samsung QN90A, employs a similarly effective wide-angle-viewing technology but costs more.) This TV also has Sony’s superb color accuracy and video-processing capability, so it’s better than the competition at removing banding artifacts. However, that wider viewing angle comes at the expense of the TV’s black level, which isn’t as dark as that of Hisense’s U7G or Samsung’s QN90A. Also, you don’t get the full complement of HDMI 2.1 features to improve the gaming experience. The Sony X950H is available in a variety of screen sizes, from 49 to 85 inches.

Why you should trust us

I’ve been reviewing TVs and home theater equipment since 2008. I am an ISF Level II–certified calibrator, so I am aware of what makes for a good TV image and how to get those things out of a TV. I have all of the necessary test equipment and software to provide objective measurements to back up my subjective opinions.

In addition to performing my own hands-on TV testing, I also rely on reviews from trusted counterparts. Rtings.com does a very good job of providing a large number of objective measurements for TVs and direct comparisons between models across all price ranges. Vincent Teoh of HDTVTest does superb TV reviews on his YouTube channel, and we often talk to him about TVs we are currently reviewing. Reviewed has lots of reviews, as well, but not the same depth of objective measurements that Rtings.com provides. David Katzmaier of CNET has one of the best test labs in the industry and can do side-by-side comparisons of multiple TVs.

Who should get this

This guide is aimed at anyone who wants better TV performance than the average budget TV delivers but doesn’t feel the need to spend a premium to get the absolute best. In our tests, we’ve found that OLED TVs consistently deliver better-looking images than LCD TVs do, but that technology is prohibitively expensive for most people, especially at screen sizes larger than 65 inches. LCD/LED TVs can deliver a picture that looks almost as good for less money and in a wider variety of screen sizes. They can also get much brighter than OLED models, making them a better fit for a very bright viewing environment such as a living room with lots of windows.

Getting a higher-performance LCD/LED TV now prepares you for the future as more content shifts from HD to 4K. Support for technologies such as high dynamic range and wide color gamut ensures that your TV will be compatible with the best-looking 4K sources. A TV that offers an advanced local-dimming backlight improves all the content you watch but is especially beneficial for 4K HDR sources. In contrast, cheaper LCD models might offer a 4K resolution, but they usually lack features like local dimming, so the image appears flatter, and true HDR just isn’t possible. And cheaper TVs generally deliver a less accurate image out of the box, produce more blurring during fast motion because of lower refresh rates, and generate less light output to help overcome the effects of windows and reflections.

If you plan to upgrade to one of the new gaming systems, either the Microsoft Xbox Series X or the Sony PlayStation 5, a newer TV can offer an improved gaming experience if it has the right features. These consoles support HDMI 2.1, which allows for a 4K resolution and a 120 Hz frame rate along with automatic low-latency mode and variable refresh rate. Using them with a TV that also supports HDMI 2.1 can produce a smoother, more dynamic image along with faster response times for a superior gaming experience.

How we picked

To be considered for this guide, an LCD/LED TV has to include the following elements (check out TV features, defined to learn more about the technical terms we use here):

  • Local dimming: This feature, which allows individual sections of the screen to be lit independently, is essential to ensure that an LCD TV has a high contrast ratio that allows for the best performance with SD, HD, and 4K/HDR video.
  • Support for as many HDR formats as possible: All HDR-capable TVs support the standard HDR10 format. For this guide, we like to see support for more advanced formats such as Dolby Vision and HDR10+, which can optimize the HDR image on a scene-by-scene basis. Many lower-end TVs can read the HDR flags on the content and understand them, but they lack the advanced display technology necessary to show HDR on the screen—much like an amateur violinist reading a complicated piece of sheet music that’s beyond their ability to play.
  • A native 120 Hz refresh rate: TVs with a 120 Hz refresh rate can display both film content (which is 24 Hz) and TV content (which is 60 Hz) without introducing judder, or jerky, stuttering motion. A TV without judder has smoother, more natural-looking motion, especially on panning shots. Plus, a 120 Hz refresh rate often allows for less motion blur when you’re watching sports or playing video games. Some TVs with 60 Hz panels have the ability to show 24 Hz content at 48 Hz; this technique avoids the issues with judder, but some people might see flicker that they wouldn’t see at 120 Hz. In our tests, during scenes with panning shots, we can still easily see the difference between 48 Hz and 120 Hz displays.
  • Support for a wider color gamut: This feature is required to show the expanded colors available in Ultra HD content.
  • Inputs that support HDMI 2.1: These inputs are necessary to receive full-bandwidth 4K HDR signals from a source device. The newer HDMI 2.1 specification adds features such as eARC and automatic low-latency mode, and those features have become common enough in 2021 that a higher-end TV should have them.
  • Integrated smart-TV services: Many people think they need a TV that forgoes smart-TV/internet features because they plan to use a media streamer of their choice. Unfortunately, at this point almost any TV available without those features is lacking in other important ways. If you don’t want to use a set’s built-in smart-TV features, you don’t have to, but actively trying to avoid a smart TV will leave you with a dumb TV that has poor image quality.

Although we don’t target a specific price range, we do keep an eye toward picture quality versus value. Sometimes barely perceptible picture improvements can cost significant amounts of money, an investment that may not be worth making for anyone but the hardcore videophile.

We focus on the popular 55-inch and 65-inch screens in our testing because those sizes can fit into most living rooms and offer a large, cinematic experience without overwhelming the room. But many of our picks come in other screen sizes, as well.

How we tested

Picture quality consists of many different components, including both objective elements that we can measure using test equipment and subjective elements that we can evaluate by doing side-by-side comparisons.

For the objective tests, we use Portrait Displays’s Calman software and the Murideo Seven pattern generator, along with the X-Rite i1Pro2 and SpectraCal C6 HDR meters. This lets us acquire before- and after-calibration measurements for each TV to see how accurate it is out of the box and how close we can bring it in line with HDTV and UHD/HDR standards.

For subjective comparisons, we consider many performance traits. A set with darker blacks produces a better contrast ratio, which helps to create an image that seems to offer more pop than on other displays. Accurate colors that look natural are preferable to oversaturated colors that don’t look realistic at all. Wider viewing angles make it easier for groups of people to watch a TV while still enjoying a good picture. Motion clarity makes fast action look clearer, but we prefer to avoid motion interpolation, which creates extra frames and produces overly smooth motion that many people don’t like. HDR presents a whole new issue, as TVs can display highlights completely differently—and all are correct, since TV manufacturers can make the choice between preserving highlight details or preserving overall picture brightness.

We do almost all of our comparisons with the settings reset to factory defaults because very few people will spend the $350 to $500 to get a TV professionally calibrated. The only adjustments we make to the TVs are in the basic user-menu picture settings, using test patterns from the Spears & Munsil HD Benchmark 2nd Edition Blu-ray Disc or Spears & Munsil UHD HDR Benchmark 4K Blu-ray Disc. This basic setup is what we hope most of our readers will apply on their TVs, and we describe it in more detail in this blog post. For models that offer a free calibration app, we use that app since most buyers will likely be able to get access to an iPhone or a compatible Android phone for five minutes to run the calibration routine.

We use a wide variety of content, including TV shows, movies, and test patterns, to compare the displays and test their abilities. An HDMI-distribution amp sends the same signal from an Ultra HD Blu-ray player or an Nvidia Shield TV to each display.

During comparison viewing, we use the SpectraCal C6 meter to get the overall brightness of the TVs to the same level so that no TV is brighter than the others (crucial for direct comparison). When evaluating HDR content, we use the maximum light output of the TV in HDR mode because higher peak output is a desirable feature here.

Additionally, we evaluate the TVs with the room’s lights on and off, and we look at them all straight on and at angles (to see how well they work for larger seating arrangements).

We aren’t too concerned about each TV’s sound quality because people interested in audio quality can easily update that with a soundbar or other equipment. Thin TVs usually have poor sound because the limited depth of the case leaves no room for decent speakers.

The best overall 4K LCD/LED TV you can buy now is the Hisense U7G, thanks to its combination of great image quality, a good user experience, and features that make it ready for the future—all for an affordable price. The TV uses advanced technologies such as quantum dots and local dimming to produce an image with rich colors, superb contrast ratios, and good high dynamic range performance. Its 120 Hz LCD panel produces cleaner, smoother motion for TV shows, movies, and video games, and its full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 inputs allow you to pair it with the newest game consoles, which run at a 4K 120 Hz refresh rate. The U7G’s inclusion of the Filmmaker picture mode makes it easy for you to get the best performance out of the TV without having to tweak the picture settings, and the built-in Android TV interface lets you easily access almost every streaming service, with no need to add an extra streaming media device.

The U7G comes in 55-, 65-, and 75-inch screen sizes (we tested the 65-inch 65U7G, but all three models should offer similar performance), and they all use local-dimming LED backlight technology to produce darker blacks and improved shadow details while still allowing for brighter highlights in other areas of the screen. This tech results in higher contrast ratios that give the image more pop, which provides a more immersive experience whether you’re watching a movie or playing a video game. Hisense’s local-dimming algorithm does a good job of preserving details in shadows, though we did sometimes see mild blooming (or glowing) around bright objects.

With standard dynamic range (SDR) video, both the Theater and Filmmaker picture modes were fairly accurate out of the box, but we preferred Filmmaker Mode because it also disabled unnecessary video-processing functions that can actually hinder the TV’s performance. The picture looked bright and colorful but not fake. Even the most demanding dark scenes in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 and Gravity rendered with the full shadow details, and we didn’t see any crushing of fine black details.

But the Hisense U7G truly shines with high dynamic range (HDR) video. Quantum-dot technology allows the TV to cover almost the entire color gamut used in current HDR content, and the full-array backlighting system can produce nearly 1,000 nits of peak brightness. Most other TVs in this price range can reach only 500 to 600 nits in peak brightness, so they lack the same impact with HDR video. When we watched our favorite HDR clips from Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Mad Max: Fury Road, and Pan, the U7G produced bright, bold, colorful images and did a good job of maintaining the fine details in the brightest highlights. The Hisense also supports the Dolby Vision HDR format, which can offer improvements in image quality over standard HDR10 material, as well as the HLG format for future HDR TV broadcasts.

Support for full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 and features such as automatic low-latency mode and variable refresh rate makes the U7G ready for the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 gaming consoles. It can display a full 4K 120 Hz HDR image from either console, so you’ll see all the details they can deliver. The TV also supports eARC to deliver improved audio quality to compatible soundbars and receivers over the HDMI ARC port. Four HDMI inputs should be enough for most people, and two of them support 4K 120 Hz signals.

The Android TV smart-TV interface continues to improve over time, as many of the features from the Google TV platform (our favorite streaming media platform) make their way there. It provides easy access to virtually any streaming service, and support for Chromecast lets you stream content that doesn’t have an integrated app.

Although the U7G has two clawfoot-style feet instead of a center stand, you can place the feet in a center position or out toward the edges. This adjustability lets the U7G work on various pieces of furniture, not just a surface that is wider than the TV. The wider setup is likely to be more stable, but we tested the TV with the center setup and had no issues.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The video processing on this Hisense TV isn’t up to the standards of Samsung or Sony. With lower-resolution content such as DVDs and standard-definition cable, you’re more likely to notice upscaling artifacts or jagged edges than you are on TVs from those other companies. With HD and 4K sources, that isn’t an issue, but if you’re still watching a large selection of DVDs, you should set up your Blu-ray player to convert them to 1080p or 4K instead of letting the U7G do the processing.

In some instances we could see the local dimming slightly darken or brighten an image after a second, as it was slow to catch up to the action on the screen. This didn’t happen often, and the effect was barely noticeable in most cases.

The cable routing on the U7G is minimal, and the legs are so thin that you can’t hide cables inside them as you can with some other TVs. You’ll still be able to make your cables less noticeable, but some other TVs offer better designs for this purpose.

The Samsung QN90A is one of the best-looking LCD TVs we’ve tested. Its use of mini-LED backlighting with quantum-dot color technology allows it to produce superb contrast ratios, very bright highlights, and rich, vibrant colors. The mini-LED system produced highlights close to 1,700 nits on our 55-inch test sample, so HDR highlights and bright outdoor scenes popped a lot more than on other LCDs, including the Hisense U7G. Samsung’s local-dimming technology cuts down on the blooming artifacts (or glowing around bright objects) that you see with lesser-quality local dimming. With an HDMI 2.1 input that supports higher bit rates and advanced gaming features, the QN90A is also a superb TV for video games. In addition, Samsung has built in its wide-angle viewing technology, so this TV looks better than many LCDs when viewed from the far ends of the couch, and an anti-reflective screen layer does a very good job of cutting down on reflections from ambient-light sources. The QN90A comes in a wide range of sizes, from 43 inches all the way up to 98 inches, so it works for any room situation.

This is the first year that Samsung has used mini-LEDs instead of a standard LED backlighting system in some of its higher-end TVs, and the technology allows for smaller areas of the screen to get brighter without causing as much blooming. As a result, when you’re watching a dark scene in a movie, bright elements such as the moon or a flashlight’s beam appear much brighter without causing other areas around them to glow. Samsung has done a good job of improving its local dimming in this TV to eliminate many of the issues we saw in its past LCDs, where the light level would flicker in certain situations. Because the local dimming is fairly aggressive in how it prevents blooming, a torture-test scene such as a starry sky might produce stars that are dimmer than on an OLED or some other LCD TVs, but the background is likely to remain very black.

The use of quantum dots (the “Q” in Samsung’s QLED naming) allows the QN90A to offer rich, vibrant images that take full advantage of HDR, an effect that is especially noticeable in brighter, outdoor images. Some other TVs run out of color saturation in very bright scenes, so highlights can look whiter instead of having a rich color, but the QN90A maintains that color saturation well. Its colors are accurate, too, so although this TV can handle those rich hues, they don’t make everything look like a neon sign in Las Vegas.

Like the Hisense U7G, the Samsung QN90A includes Filmmaker Mode, which automatically configures the TV’s picture settings to look the way the content creators intended. On the QN90A, we found that Filmmaker Mode worked perfectly with HDR content but made SDR content look too dark for most rooms, and adjusting the backlight control didn’t fix that—so for SDR you may want to use the TV’s Movie picture mode instead. (See Recommended settings below for more information.)

The QN90A supports full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 on only one of its inputs. This lets you play games on an Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5 at 4K 120 Hz, but if you have more than one 4K 120 Hz device, you need to add a receiver or a compatible HDMI switch. The TV also has three other HDMI inputs, including one with eARC support for sending uncompressed audio from the TV and connected devices back to a soundbar or receiver. On top of all that, Samsung has built in a host of gaming features to let you control shadow and highlight details, to enable the HGiG HDR format for gaming, and to make sure the input lag is as low as possible. In our testing, input lag was right around 10 ms, which is very fast and should provide a superb gaming experience.

The QN90A has a minimalist design, with a thin bezel and a center-mounted stand that positions the screen high enough for you to place a soundbar in front of the TV. The stand is designed to allow cable routing in the back, but my cables refused to stay in place (different cables might work better). The included remote has a solar panel on the back for recharging, as well as a USB-C connection to recharge it that way.

The QN90A also has an ATSC 3.0 tuner to support the newest over-the-air broadcast standards, which allow you to watch local channels often in higher resolution, such as 1080p, with less compression and with improved audio compared with prior OTA channels. ATSC 3.0 support from broadcasters is still rolling out, but it’s nice that this TV is ready for the new standard. The Tizen smart-TV interface is easy enough to use, though it lacks the deep selection of apps that some other smart-TV platforms have.

Our main complaint about the Samsung QN90A is that it doesn’t support the Dolby Vision HDR standard. When we compared this TV directly with models offering Dolby Vision support, we could see slight benefits in color saturation from the Dolby Vision TVs when playing Dolby Vision content, but the Samsung model’s performance came close. For other HDR content, including games, we found that the QN90A looked better.

A more affordable option for larger spaces: Sony X950H

If you have a larger space where you’re likely to watch a TV at wide angles (as opposed to straight on), the Sony X950H is a great option that is available in more screen sizes than the Hisense U7G and is more affordable than the Samsung QN90A. All LCD/LED TVs take a hit in picture quality when viewed at wide angles, but the X950H maintains its color saturation and contrast ratio far better than many TVs when viewed from the sides—so larger groups see a better-looking image than they do on other LCD models. Since it’s from Sony, the X950H features some of the best video processing out there, along with excellent brightness (over 1,000 nits), accurate colors, superb local-dimming capabilities, and support for Dolby Vision HDR. But it doesn’t have any HDMI 2.1 features aside from eARC, and the wide-angle technology keeps the black level from being as dark as on our Hisense and Samsung picks. It’s also not as bright as the Samsung QN90A, and the screen does not cut down on ambient-light reflections.

The X950H comes in 49-, 55-, 65-, 75-, and 85-inch sizes, and all of them except the 49-inch version use the wide-angle technology. Watching the X950H off-angle, I could see that this technology works very well—it produces an image that looks great even when you view the TV from way off to the side, and though the black level does degrade a bit, it’s still much better than the black levels on in-plane switching (IPS) LCD panels, which are also designed to produce wider viewing angles. If you want to put your TV in a location where you’ll often watch from spots other than the center of the couch, the X950H is likely to offer a better image than other LCD TVs.

Sony TVs have some of the best video processing available. The X950H’s video processor excels at upscaling lower-resolution video and cleaning up noise in compressed video, such as banding in streamed content. You also get accurate colors straight from the box, in the Cinema or Custom picture mode (though the TV lacks Filmmaker Mode), as well as some of the best local dimming, but this TV can’t get as dark as the Hisense and Samsung models since it has fewer zones of local dimming.

Like the Hisense U7G, the Sony X950H uses the Android TV interface. It is fast and responsive, with a quick-access menu that lets you easily adjust common TV settings. Android TV has become a much better streaming option than it was just a few years ago, and the X950H includes most of the major streaming services.

The X950H’s physical design is nice, with good build quality, some cable routing, and an updated remote control that feels good in the hand. This year Sony has added audio calibration to the remote, so you can get improved audio quality for your main seating position using an automated setup routine.

For people who sit directly in front of the TV when they’re watching it, the Hisense U7G offers a superior value and, in most cases, a better-quality image with deeper blacks and a wider color gamut. It also has HDMI 2.1 features, such as automatic low-latency mode, that the X950H lacks, but it doesn’t look as good as this Sony model when you’re watching off-angle. The Samsung QN90A offers the best of both worlds but costs much more.

Other good LCD/LED TVs

If you want the most accurate image: The Sony X95J has the most accurate image of any TV we’ve tested in both SDR and HDR modes, but be prepared to pay a higher price for that accuracy. Unlike most TVs, it reproduces HDR brightness perfectly, so everything is at the correct level. It also has the best image processing available of the TVs we tested, so it can reduce artifacts in streaming video and does a better job upscaling lower-resolution content to 4K. The local-dimming backlight is superb: Even though it has fewer dimming zones than the Samsung QN90A, it doesn’t hide black details or create excess blooming (or glow) around bright objects. But it can’t get as bright as the Samsung QN90A with HDR video, only producing 1,000 nits compared to over 1,500, and the Samsung line costs less. The X95J uses the same wide-angle-viewing technology as the X950H but replaces Android TV with the excellent Google TV streaming interface. Plus it has a pair of HDMI 2.1 inputs that accept 4K 120 Hz signals from the newest gaming systems. But it’s only available in 65-, 75-, and 85-inch sizes, and the 65-inch version lacks the anti-reflective screen coating you get on the larger sizes.

If you prefer a Roku TV and aren’t a hardcore gamer: The TCL 6-Series (model R635) is a good alternative to the Hisense U7G. This TV used to be our main pick, but the U7G offers better support for HDMI 2.1 game consoles—and this series has now been replaced with a new 6-Series for 2022. But if you aren’t a gamer and don’t need the 4K 120 Hz signal input that the U7G provides, the 6-Series is still a good TV—especially if you prefer the Roku streaming platform over Android TV. The 6-Series has very nice local dimming, with a mini-LED backlight that’s similar to the backlight on the Samsung QN90A, though it can’t get quite as bright and has fewer dimming zones. It uses quantum dots to produce a very wide color gamut, and HDR content looks fantastic. The built-in Roku platform is simple to navigate and currently offers every streaming service you’re likely to need, and it supports AirPlay for streaming content from Apple devices. The TV is available in 55-, 65-, and 75-inch screen sizes.

If you prefer Google TV: TCL also offers a version of the 6-Series (model R646) that uses Google TV instead of Roku, and it adds support for 4K 120 Hz signals over two of its HDMI inputs. It too comes in 55-, 65-, and 75-inch sizes.

TV features, defined

Following are some of the most common features we talk about, and why they’re important to look for on a TV.

LCD: LCD stands for liquid crystal display, and it’s the most common kind of television besides OLED (defined below). LCD TVs shine an LED backlight through a panel of liquid crystal, a malleable substance that reacts to electricity, opening or closing when jolted. In LCD TVs, the liquid crystal opens to allow the backlight through or closes to block it. The specific details of the opening/closing are dependent upon the arrangement of the pixels: The most common LCD arrangements are Vertical Alignment (VA) and In-Plane Switching (IPS), with the former tending to produce higher contrast and the latter tending to produce wider viewing angles. All so-called “LED” TVs are really LCD TVs, as are all current QLED and ULED TVs.

OLED: An organic light-emitting diode, or OLED, TV creates light inside each individual pixel without using a backlight and can dim each pixel individually all the way down to black, which LCD TVs can’t do. This tech gives an OLED TV an infinite contrast ratio and other benefits to help create an overall better-looking image, although at considerable additional cost. You can read more about OLED technology in this article.

Full-array local dimming backlight: This term refers to a TV technology in which the backlight is behind the LCD panel and has individual zones that can turn on and off depending on the content. Such TVs are usually larger and more expensive to build and design, and more zones cost more. However, TVs with full-array local dimming typically provide the best LCD picture quality by improving contrast ratios and shadow detail.

Mini-LEDs: Every LCD TV made today currently uses LEDs to produce the light that shines through the LCD panel. Most TVs use LED lights that pass through a diffuser to light up the entire LCD screen. Mini-LEDs, which some TVs use, are much smaller than traditional LEDs, so TV makers can install more of them and thus create more zones of local dimming, which means less blooming or halos around bright objects. Mini-LEDs are completely different from micro-LEDs, an available (though very expensive) technology that employs individual red, green, and blue LEDs to produce an image without needing an LCD panel at all.

Nits: Also called candelas per square meter (cd/m²), this unit of luminance measures how much light a TV can produce. Previously, TVs could output 200 to 300 nits, and SDR content was graded and mastered with 100 nits as the standard. With HDR, content is mastered with 1,000, 4,000, or 10,000 nits as the standard; so, the more nits an HDR TV can display, the more accurately it can display the highlights in HDR material without having to reduce the brightness of the highlights or clip them.

High dynamic range (HDR): High dynamic range lets a TV display much brighter highlights while retaining deep blacks, although only with special HDR content. Whereas standard dynamic range (SDR) content has a peak brightness of around 100 nits, high-end HDR sets can have highlights that exceed 1,500 nits. This feature drastically improves contrast ratios and provides a more dynamic image in which bright objects (the sun, fire, a photon torpedo) really jump off the screen. HDR10 is the standard format that all HDR-capable TVs support. HDR10 content contains metadata (or information about how the image should be presented) only for the movie as a whole, while the more advanced HDR10+ and Dolby Vision formats have metadata for each individual scene—so the TV can better optimize the image as it changes.

Wide color gamut: Ultra HD content has a wider color gamut than standard HDTV content; right now, most UHD content is mastered with the same DCI/P3 color gamut used in theatrical cinema (the ultimate goal is the even larger Rec. 2020 color gamut). This expanded color gamut allows a TV to display richer reds, blues, and greens than ever before. Some TVs use quantum-dot technology to produce this wider color gamut.

Quantum dots: Quantum dots are a color-enhancing technology primarily found in LCD TVs (though some 2022 OLED TVs now have them as well). Chiefly employed as a filter that’s painted onto a substrate, quantum dots are microscopic nano-crystals that, when struck with blue light, produce very vivid red or green light (depending upon the size of the crystal). Quantum dots are the primary technology that allows LCD TVs to produce the wide color gamut required to display HDR content properly, as they greatly increase the color saturation of red and green.

HDMI 2.1: HDMI 2.1, the most recent version of HDMI, adds support for 8K displays, automatic low-latency mode for improved gaming, eARC for better audio when you’re using Audio Return Channel, variable refresh rate for syncing the TV’s refresh rate to a gaming console to avoid stuttering, and dynamic metadata support. For more about HDMI 2.1, read our blog post.

HDCP 2.3: This is the most recent version of the copy-protection standard used over HDMI, though for now it’s most important that a TV supports HDCP 2.2. Without HDCP 2.2 support, a TV or other HDMI device (soundbar, receiver) cannot transmit or display Ultra HD images. All of our picks support HDCP 2.2.

Refresh rate: All digital displays (including TVs) have what’s called a refresh rate, measured in hertz (Hz), shorthand for cycles per second. A TV’s refresh rate refers to how quickly it displays new incoming video information on a nanosecond-to-nanosecond basis. While there are many possible refresh rates, most TVs come with either a 60 Hz refresh rate (meaning 60 screen refreshes per second) or a 120 Hz refresh rate (120 screen refreshes per second). Ideally, a TV will have the highest refresh rate possible, but there are diminishing returns for higher refresh rates during many types of content. A 120 Hz TV has advantages when watching 24p content or mitigating judder (definitions below), and tends to produce less input lag when playing video games, but it won’t provide advantages for most forms of cable TV or streaming content. In 2022, some manufacturers introduced 144 Hz TVs meant to appeal specifically to gamers, but the majority of TVs still have 60 or 120 Hz refresh rates.

24p: With few exceptions, movies in a theater display at 24 frames per second, abbreviated as 24p, which gives movies that “cinematic” look. All TVs now support 24p content, but some maintain that look better than others.

Judder: This term refers to a slightly jerky motion that can occur when 24p film content appears on a TV with a 60 Hz refresh rate. In such situations, to make 24 frames match up to the 60 Hz display, half of the frames appear two times and the other half appear three times. This display technique causes judder, which is most noticeable on panning shots. Some 120 Hz displays avoid this effect by repeating each film frame five times, while some 60 Hz panels run at 48 Hz to show each frame twice.

Motion smoothing: Motion smoothing, sometimes called MEMC (Motion Estimation/Motion Compensation), refers to a TV’s ability to intelligently create new frames to create smoother-looking or less juddery motion. Most modern TVs can artificially increase their refresh rates to smooth out fast or difficult sequences, but the efficacy of this motion smoothing is often dependent upon the TV’s native refresh rate. Motion smoothing is also the cause of the “soap opera effect,” where cinematic/24p content looks more like a daytime soap opera due to the insertion of unnecessary frames. The best TVs come with multiple motion smoothing presets, and some even allow the user to fine-tune the degree of judder reduction and frame interpolation employed. When used correctly, motion smoothing can make content like sports and nature documentaries look more realistic, but we prefer it be turned off for content like premium TV, movies, and video games.

To help you get the best performance out of our picks, we’ve added some of the optimal image settings here for you. These settings will produce as accurate an image as possible without a professional calibration or test-pattern disc. We don’t specify values for controls such as brightness, contrast, color, and tint because those values can vary on a set-to-set basis, even on models that are identical and manufactured at the same time; to adjust those you need a disc of test patterns. You might also want a slightly different look, even if it’s less accurate, but the following settings provide a good starting point.

  • Hisense U7G SDR: Use Filmmaker Mode. Adjust the backlight to your preference, and disable the automatic light sensor. Everything else comes set up correctly.
  • Hisense U7G HDR: Use Filmmaker Mode. Adjust the backlight to your preference, and disable the automatic light sensor. Everything else comes set up correctly.
  • Samsung QN90A SDR: Filmmaker Mode will set everything up correctly but might be too dim for some rooms. If you use the Movie picture mode, leave Contrast, Brightness, Tint, and Sharpness alone. Disable Contrast Enhancer and set Local Dimming to High. We left Gamma at default, but some people may prefer 2.2 for rooms with more ambient light (to avoid shadows being washed out).
  • Samsung QN90A HDR: We used Filmmaker Mode, which had accurate colors, tracked the HDR standard correctly, and disabled processing that should be disabled for ideal image quality.
  • Sony X950H SDR: Use Custom picture mode. Black Adjust Off, Advanced Contrast Enhancer Off, Reality Creation Off, Random Noise Reduction Off, Digital Noise Reduction Off, Smooth Gradation Low, and Auto Local Dimming Medium. Motionflow Custom, with Smoothness and Clearness at 2, offers improved motion clarity without the “soap opera effect,” but some people may not like the resulting small drop in brightness.
  • Sony X950H HDR: Use Custom picture mode for HDR10 or Dolby Vision Dark for Dolby Vision; leave the main settings alone. Black Adjust Off, Advanced Contrast Enhancer Off, Reality Creation Off, Random Noise Reduction Off, Digital Noise Reduction Off, and Smooth Gradation Low.

Another important thing to consider if you’re not wall-mounting the TV and you have kids in the house is to anchor the TV. Doing so will minimize the chances of the set falling over if someone yanks on it (or if it falls over in an earthquake, if you’re in an area so prone). An anchor system is cheap (usually around $20 or so) and easy to install. This item may seem frivolous, but no matter how stable a television stand can be, a TV can still topple easily if a child pulls on it.

What to look forward to

Sony's X95K Series is the company’s premium 4K TV for 2022. It uses mini-LED backlighting, and comes in screen sizes of 65, 75, and 85 inches. We're currently testing the step-down X90K Series (55, 65, 75, and 85 inches) which uses traditional full-array backlight with local dimming.

Samsung’s flagship 4K TV for 2022 the QN95B, which uses quantum dots and mini-LED backlighting and comes in 55-, 65-, and 75-inch sizes. We're most interested in the QN90B (the follow-up to our current upgrade pick). It also has quantum dots and mini-LEDs, but comes in more screen sizes (from 43 to 98 inches) for a little less money.

LG's premium 2022 LCD line is called “QNED” to represent the use of quantum dots and LG’s NanoCell technology for improved color performance, and the use of mini-LED backlighting for improved contrast. This year’s lineup features the 8K QNED99 and 4K QNED90, QNED85, and QNED80 (the only one that does not use mini-LED backlighting), all with varying degrees of processing prowess and local-dimming control and all utilizing LG’s a7 Gen5 processor. The QNED80 Series is currently available in 50-, 55-, 65-, 75-, and 86-inch sizes, with the series boasting 4K resolution, quantum dot and NanoCell color/contrast enhancement, 120 Hz refresh rates, and LG’s webOS 22 smart platform. The next step up is the QNED85 Series, which adds mini-LED backlighting to the formula and is available in 55-, 65-, 75-, and 86-inch options. Both the 4K QNED90 Series and 8K QNED99 Series are slated for 65-, 75-, and 86-inch sizes.

TCL confirmed its 2022 lineup on September 1, introducing a new 6-Series (as well as a new 5-Series Roku model, our current pick for best 4K TV on a budget). The new 6-Series (R655) will be available in 55-, 65-, and 75-inch sizes and continue to offer the same picture-enhancing features as the previous series: quantum dots (for improved color saturation), a mini-LED backlight with local dimming (for better contrast), and 120 Hz refresh rates. The 2022 6-Series also offers full HDR format support (HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, and Dolby Vision) and improved gaming features, including two HDMI 2.1 inputs that support 4K up to 144 Hz. It will continue to support the popular Roku streaming platform, and TCL has claimed that the largest size will boast up to 360 local dimming zones. The 55-inch model (55R655) starts at $700; the 65-inch model (65R655) starts at $1,000; and the 75-inch model (75R55) starts at $1,500.

Hisense announced its 2022 ULED lineup back in June. The U7H Series (the 2022 version of our current top pick) is offered in 55-, 65-, 75-, and 85-inch sizes. This series features quantum dot color enhancement and boasts around 1,000 nits peak brightness with up to 90 local dimming zones. It delivers two HDMI 2.1 inputs and 120 Hz refresh rates, and will also utilize the Google TV smart platform. The U8H Series is Hisense’s flagship for 2022, and will be available in 55-, 65-, and 75-inch sizes eventually. This is Hisense’s only 2022 series to utilize a mini-LED backlight, and as such is capable of over 500 local dimming zones (depending upon screen size) and up to 1,500 nits of peak brightness. The U8H also utilizes quantum dots to achieve HDR color and operates via the Google TV platform, but adds Wi-Fi 6 compatibility, far-field microphones, and VRR up to 120 Hz (with native 120 Hz panels) alongside FreeSync Premium support.

Vizio confirmed its 2022/2023 TV lineup in July. You’ll find more info about the new V-Series and M-Series Quantum line in our Best 4K TV on a budget guide, but the new M-Series Quantum X is one to watch as far as premium LCD TVs are concerned. Positioned as a “Vizio P-Series with more aggressive pricing,” the M-Series Quantum X (MQX for short) delivers 4K resolution, quantum dot color, 120 Hz refresh rates, and full-array local dimming. The 2022 MQX will be available in 50-, 65-, and 75-inch sizes, with differing brightness and local-dimming zone counts depending upon size. We’re currently testing the 65-inch MQX TV.

The competition

Our requirements for the best LCD/LED TV, including full-array local dimming and a true 120 Hz refresh rate, mean that most TVs out there don’t qualify for testing and contention in this guide. Also, TV makers have started reducing the number of 4K models they have, or reducing the features in those TVs, as they focus on 8K for their most high-end displays. We don’t think 8K is worth the investment yet, just as 4K wasn’t at the start, so we dismissed a number of premium TVs—but we still expect that prices on 8K TVs will come down over the next few years, and that 8K sets will replace 4K models as our best LCD/LED TV picks.

The big-name TV manufacturers usually introduce completely new TV lines every year and gradually phase out the previous models. We are just beginning our testing of 2022 LCD TVs. Here are the 2021 TVs we tested or considered that did not earn a spot on our list:

The Hisense U8G improves upon the previous H9G by adding more zones of local dimming, full HDMI 2.1 support for new video game consoles, and highlights that pushed past 1,500 nits in our measurements. But in a situation similar to last year, in this model the Hisense hardware is let down by software that isn’t as refined as the competition’s. In our tests of SDR and HDR content, the gamma curve and EOTF, respectively, were too bright no matter what picture mode we selected, and we were unable to correct the problem. As a result, images looked more washed out and lacked pop compared with what we saw from the competition. With SDR video, shadow areas appeared closer to gray than black unless we significantly lowered the backlight, and then the image was too dim for many rooms. HDR images were brighter than they should have been, which also caused colors to be less saturated than on competing TVs, so the extra brightness was wasted. Dolby Vision content looked good, since Dolby Vision forces the image to be more accurate, but that doesn’t help with non-Dolby content. The video processing also fell behind, with noticeable jaggies on interlaced content like HDTV broadcasts or DVDs, which none of the other tested TVs had issues with.

Samsung’s QN85A has many of the same features as the QN90A but uses a different type of LCD panel with wider viewing angles but lower contrast ratios. It also uses a mini-LED backlighting system, but it can’t get as bright as the QN90A and has fewer dimming zones (though it costs less). Since the QN90A already does a good job of offering wider viewing angles than a conventional LCD, we chose to review and recommend it instead.

The more affordable Samsung Q80A also meets our requirements for this guide but, like the QN85A, uses a different type of LCD panel with especially poor black levels. Without the mini-LED backlighting system that the Neo QLED models use, the Q80A TV offers very poor contrast, making it almost impossible to recommend.

The TCL 6-Series (model R648) is a 2021 update to the 6-Series that adds 8K resolution and full HDMI 2.1 features, including 4K at 120 Hz, variable refresh rate, and automatic low-latency mode. Its full-array local dimming worked well in our tests, and its dynamic tone mapping better preserves HDR highlights. The HDMI 2.1 gaming features worked perfectly, too, with the TV automatically detecting our Xbox Series X and enabling variable refresh rate and game mode while displaying everything at 4K 120 Hz. But 8K is a feature that we don’t think you need right now due to the price premium, and it can actually have negative effects. This TCL model has to scale all 4K content to 8K to display it, and in our tests it scaled some content incorrectly—so a yellow and red neon sign became only red, for example. And film grain on Blu-ray discs was amplified; instead of being a fine grain, it was more apparent and noisier. For the same price, you can get either an OLED TV or our upgrade pick, the Samsung QN90A, both of which offer superior 4K performance today. If you need 8K, the TCL 6-Series R648 is a good option, but sticking with 4K gives you a better TV for the price.

We tested Vizio’s 2021 P-Series Quantum (P65Q9-J01) and found that it offers image quality almost indistinguishable from the Hisense U7G’s results, with nearly 1,000 nits of brightness. It also has a pair of HDMI 2.1 inputs that support 4K 120 Hz with HDR. But Vizio’s SmartCast streaming platform isn’t as nice to use as Android TV, and the app selection is far more limited. In addition, Vizio is still working out bugs in the 2020 models in relation to certain game consoles and other devices, which makes us wary of recommending them right now.

All of the TVs listed below were introduced and tested in 2020 or earlier:

The 2020 Hisense H9G is an improvement over the 2019 H8G model largely because this set has a much faster processor that makes the Android TV experience far better than before. The H9G also has very good local dimming, and with HDR content in our tests, colors looked vibrant and bold. However, we also noticed some color issues—for instance, a bright and cloudy sky had a yellow tint that it shouldn’t have, and skin tones looked too rosy. When we tried to correct these problems using the calibration controls, the tools introduced other artifacts that made the picture worse, so we were unable to fix those issues. And the TV lacks support for HDMI 2.1 features like automatic low-latency mode and variable refresh rate.

LG’s Nano90 was the least expensive LCD TV in the company’s 2020 NanoCell lineup to use a full-array LED backlight with local dimming. We did not review this TV, but Rtings.com reports that the IPS panel gives it a wide viewing angle but worse black levels and contrast ratios, and that it doesn’t get bright enough to present HDR impressively. If you need a wider viewing angle, the Sony X950H is a better choice.

Samsung’s cheapest 2020 4K TV with local dimming was the Q80T. In our tests, we found that it couldn’t get as bright as our main picks, topping out at around 750 nits instead of 1,000. Unfortunately, its local dimming wasn’t as good as that of the competition, acting too aggressively to prevent blooming and in return hiding small details in Gravity and other films. The HDR mode wasn’t accurate, making everything brighter than it should have been with no way to easily eliminate the effect. This TV works great for video games thanks to an HDMI 2.1 input with support for variable refresh rate and automatic low-latency mode, but movies and TV look better on our picks here.

The Sony X900H was that company’s cheapest full-array local dimming TV in 2020, but it tops out at around 750 nits of peak brightness and lacks some of the features you get on the higher-end X950H, as it doesn’t offer the wide-viewing-angle screen or the same image-processing functions to clean up noisy TV and streaming signals. It supports 4K at 120 Hz (whereas the X950H doesn’t) but does so with lesser image quality than on competing TVs. Sony’s 2021 X90J model is replacing this TV.

The TCL 8-Series was the first TV with mini-LEDs that we tested, and it offers great contrast ratios, bright HDR highlights, and an integrated Roku streaming system. It was our prior upgrade pick, but unfortunately it doesn’t support HDMI 2.1 features such as 4K at 120 Hz for the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, and it’s not available in as many screen sizes as the Samsung QN90A. It offers a great-looking image but is due for a refresh at this point.
