Which Harry Potter book has a misprint?

It's time to call your mom to dig through the basement boxes! According to The Independent, 500 hardback copies of the first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (known as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in the U.S.), contain a rare error—and those unique books can now fetch as much as $26,000 in auction. The error is a typo on page 53 of the book. In the list of school supplies Harry needs for Hogwarts, the item "1 wand" is listed twice by mistake. It was corrected in all later editions of the inaugural Harry Potter tale.

It's not that big of mistake, really, but the error is making these books super valuable. One Harry Potter book containing the error is set to be auctioned off in London on November 9, with its worth estimated between £15,000-20,000, which equates to about $19,723-26,298.

Yeah, that money could buy you a whole lotta butterbeer! British auction house Bonhams is selling the 1997 first-edition hardback book, which is described as being in "exceptionally fine condition." Besides the error on page 53, the Bonhams copy of the book is also worth more because it is a "first impression" of the first-edition hardback, meaning it's part of the first ever print run of the book. How Bonhams can tell: A first impression copy has the number sequence "10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1" on the back of the title page. The auction house notes that second impression copies also have some value, but it's the first impression and first-edition copy that's the most valuable.

So, why would a muggle pay so much for a book with "1 wand" listed twice? Bonhams Head of Books and Manuscripts Matthew Haley offers his take in the auction listing.

"As the first book in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone has a special place in the affections of the millions of readers across the world and the proof reading error about the wand in the first edition has, of course, become a treasured piece of Harry Potter arcana," Haley explains.

Still don't get it? Me neither, but it's definitely worth digging through your old books in case you're sitting on $26,000. Just make sure the book is the 1997 U.K. edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (the book came out in the U.K. first before its 1998 release in the U.S.), that it has the error on page 53, *and* that it has the number sequence that ensures it's a first impression copy. First editions of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone may be worth thousands of dollars thanks to a typo that exists in 500 hardback copies of the first novel in J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world series.

As reported by the Independent, the error lies within a passage on page 53 in which “1 wand” is repeated twice in a list of supplies first-year wizards are expected to bring with them to Hogwarts. One book that includes the misprint is even expected to bring in more than $33,000 when it is sold at London’s Bonhams Fine Books and Manuscripts in November.

“As the first book in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone has a special place in the affections of the millions of readers across the world and the proof reading error about the wand in the first edition has, of course, become a treasured piece of Harry Potter arcana,” Matthew Haley, the Head of Books and Manuscripts at Bonhams, told the Independent.
