Who is the anonymous person in rebel cheer squad?

Whilst some viewers may have been hoping for a second series of Get Even, the spirit of the first series is still going strong – this time via a new generation. (Fans of Cheer will be thrilled, too!) Now titled Rebel Cheer Squad, the teen thriller follows Clara, Grace, and Rumi as they decide to resurrect Bannerman School’s secret society Don’t Get Mad (DGM) in order to unmask an anonymous force spreading fear and panic among classmates. Like Get Even, Rebel Cheer Squad is set in the confines of Bannerman Independent School. But is this fancy elite establishment a real place? And where is Rebel Cheer Squad filmed?

Bannerman School may be the fictional hub for Get Even and Rebel Cheer Squad, but the actual location is a very real place. Bannerman AKA Bolton School in Lancashire is one of the largest private schools in the country that has celebrities like Sir Ian McKellen as alumni, per The Cinemaholic.

Not only does the show benefit from such a classy and grand location, but the money made by Bolton School through filming goes directly towards a bursary scheme to “open the gates to bright students regardless of their background,” according to The Bolton News.

Described by the school itself as “the ideal setting for location filming and photography shoots”, its mix of “tradition, history, and modernity” has drawn many productions to the independent school since it opened its doors for filming. It’s even been described as a real-life Hogwarts by some visitors, as Cosmopolitan notes, and by the looks of it they’re not wrong.

Bolton School has been the backdrop to many productions including the Netflix series The Stranger, starring Richard Armitage, as well as an upcoming untitled Channel 4/Netflix comedy. But it’s not the only place where Get Even – and potentially Rebel Cheer Squad – was filmed. The first series also utilised Bolton’s Le Mans Crescent, which shows likes It’s A Sinand Peaky Blindershave also used.

Get Even, which debuted in 2020, was a refreshing British teen series that showed a group of girls banding together to anonymously get back at the bullies at their prestigious school. Two years later, that group has moved on, and another one needs to take their place. So who better than a group of plucky cheerleaders?

Opening Shot: A shot of a cheerleader unconscious on the ground. Three other cheerleaders look on, with one saying “This is all my fault.”

The Gist: It’s been a couple of years since the original DGM group, that flushed out and tormented bullies of all stripes at Bannerman Independent School, have graduated, and the bullying has come back with a vengeance.

One sign is shown during a cheer practice, where a girl named May (Jessie Mae Alonzo) decides to quit, mainly because she’s leaving school. Clara Harris (Lashay Anderson), daughter of the cheer coach (Don Gilet), decides to drop her phone in May’s backpack with the voice recording on to see if she can get any insight. Embarrassed, she turns to her cheer buddies Grace Ellington (Amelia Brooks) and Rumi Joshi (Ashling O’Shea) to get the phone back. After their scheme to pluck the phone out of May’s bag works, they listen to the recordings. They’re too jumbled, so Rumi offers to clean them up.

The cleaned up recording reveals that May was getting terrifying, anonymous notes in her locker. Grace appeals to the principal, Ms. Carson (Kirsty Hoiles), but she says it’s too late. Grace changes her school president campaign speech to reflect her dedication to stop bullying in the school; most people applaud but cheer bully Viola (Kat Rooney) does not. There’s also a confrontation between Viola and Clara over the coach’s choice of Clara’s sister Leila (Renee Bailey) for the top of a formation.

The trio goes up to the roof of the school and wishes DGM were still around, especially after they get an anonymous note saying something will happen at the cheer presentation that night. When Leila, at the top of a formation, passes out and falls to the ground, the trio decide to form a new DGM and flush out the bully.

What Shows Will It Remind You Of? Given that this is subtitled “A Get Even Series”, saying that Rebel Cheer Squad resembles its parent show isn’t a big stretch.

Our Take: Both Get Even and Rebel Cheer Squad are based on Gretchen McNeil’s book series, so the creation of a new DGM wasn’t created out of whole cloth from a fever dream of BBC executives (both series debuted on the UK network’s iPlayer before coming to Netflix). But after the first episode, Rebel Cheer Squad doesn’t feel all that different than the original series. There are small differences, but it’s the same theme: A group of girls are going to anonymously go after Bannerman’s bullies, whether they be students or faculty.

What are the small differences? These girls are already friends, and they’re all on the cheer squad, whereas the original brought together a disparate group that were not necessarily friends. And the DGM is now three girls instead of four. Will their targets be different? Sure. It’ll be fun to see how this group manages to get even with the bullies at their school compared to the first group. But, to be honest, the show feels like it’s more of a continuation of Get Even than something different. If that’s your vibe, great. But most viewers likely got their fill during the original series.

Sex and Skin: None.

Parting Shot: The girls find a missing water bottle, and they see a surveillance camera looking at them. Then a gloved hand puts the stolen bottle in a storage cubicle deep within a tower.

Sleeper Star: Don Gilet plays Coach Harris, and father to Clara and Leila, and he actually comes off as a decent guy and not an evil faculty member.

Most Pilot-y Line: Clara asks Leila if she’s going to “suck face” with her boyfriend, and swears she’ll get a cold sore. “Oh, you get cold sores from face sucking?” Leila asks. “Yes! Seriously, Leila, read a book!” Clara responds. We’d like to see that book on face sucking maladies.

Our Call: STREAM IT. We’re recommending Rebel Cheer Squad: A Get Even Series because it’s perfectly pleasant with a good young cast. But it doesn’t feel fundamentally different than the original Get Even series, making us wonder if it was at all necessary.
