Who is the best college wrestler right now

College wrestling is still four months-and-change from getting under way, but it’s never too early for preseason rankings. InterMat released its preseason individual and team rankings ahead of the 2022-23 season. As far as the team rankings are concerned, there are two sets: dual meet and tournament. But the same familiar faces are near the top, while some new teams made some serious leaps after the 2021-22 season.

The dual meet rankings are how the teams would fare against one another in a match with all 10 wrestlers toeing the line. The tournament rankings are based on individual scoring on the national tournament to determine team trophies and standings.

The usual suspects like Penn State, Iowa and Oklahoma State, among others, will look to continue dominance across the sport but there are plenty of squads looking to shake it up.

Let’s dive into the preseason top 25 for college wrestling in 2022-23, per InterMat.

1. Penn State

Tournament ranking: No. 1

No secret here. Penn State is far and away the best team in college wrestling. The Nittany Lions bring back four individual national champions to the lineup and have another potential champion in Greg Kerkvliet at heavyweight. But Roman Bravo-Young, Carter Starocci, Aaron Brooks and Max Dean can all win titles again. It’s going to be near impossible to beat this team in a dual meet, and they’re the heavy favorites to win the team title again in Tulsa.

2. Iowa

Tournament ranking: No. 2

The Hawkeyes have a lot of new faces in the lineup but the development is key. Based on the preseason rankings, a younger Iowa lineup looks pretty dangerous. Not to mention, three-time national champion Spencer Lee is back for his final season after electing to undergo knee surgery last year. He’s the heavy favorite at 125 pounds, and he’ll be the anchor for the Hawkeyes, who have plenty of All-American candidates in 2022-23. Tom and Terry Brands have a solid team this season.

3. Oklahoma State

Tournament ranking: Tied No. 6

The Cowboys have all 10 wrestlers ranked in the preseason, per InterMat. John Smith doesn’t want to go without a team trophy or an individual national champion this coming season. The team gets three-time finalist Daton Fix back at 133 pounds and 2021 national champion A.J. Ferrari at 197 pounds. They’ll score points at the national tournament, and as a dual meet team, Oklahoma State is going to be tough to beat with hammers up and down the lineup.

4. Missouri

Tournament ranking: Tied for No. 6

Keegan O’Toole, a 2022 national champion, is back at 165 pounds as just a sophomore, and don’t forget guys like Allan Hart and Brock Mauller in the middle of the lineup. Mizzou has some hammers in the middle, and the Elam’s up top can be some of the best upperweights in the country. Rocky Elam mans 197 and Zach Elam goes at heavyweight. Missouri is basically the class of the Big 12, along with Oklahoma State, making it a two-team race in that conference.

5. Ohio State

Tournament ranking: No. 4

The Buckeyes have some high-quality wrestlers back, such as Sammy Sasso, Gavin Hoffman, Kaleb Romero and Ethan Smith. Sasso might have the best opportunity for a national title, but he’d have to get through Yianni Diakomihalis of Cornell at 149 pounds. Otherwise, Ohio State should have plenty of All-Americans in the lineup again, and it could be on the cusp of a team trophy as well due to the No. 4 ranking, tournament wise.

6. Cornell

Tournament ranking: No. 9

The Big Red have a lot of young talent, in addition to having Diakomihalis -- a three-time national champion -- back in the lineup. Vito Arujau mans the 125 pound weight class and is in the running for a title, but he’d have to get through the monster that is Spencer Lee (Iowa). Elsewhere, Chris Foca, Jonathan Loew, Jacob Cardenas and Lewis Fernandes have 174 through heavyweight for Cornell, giving the team some of the best upperweights in the nation.

7. Michigan

Tournament ranking: No. 5

Michigan really peaked last year with national champion Nick Suriano and All-Americans Will Lewan and Myles Amine, to name a few. But there’s a lot of turnover in the lineup. However, the team brings back Lewan, Cameron Amine, heavyweight Mason Parris -- one of the best in his weight class -- and Duke transfer Matt Finesilver at 174. It might be hard to grab an individual national title, but the Wolverines should be in the running for another team trophy in Tulsa.

8. Arizona State

Tournament ranking: No. 3

The Sun Devils have a pretty solid lineup all around, but some individual hammers, such as heavyweight Cohlton Schultz, will have an ability to score a lot of points at the national tournament, giving the team a higher ranking there. Schultz lost to Gable Steveson (Minnesota) in last year’s final, but has a great shot to win a title this season. The team also brings back Brandon Courtney (125), Michael McGee (133) and Cael Valencia (174), among others to make this a top 10 team in 2022-23.

9. Northwestern

Tournament ranking: No. 12

What Matt Storniolo is doing at Northwestern is nothing short of amazing. This team was outstanding in 2021-22 and is already a preseason top-10 squad. This could be one of, if not the best team in school history. Michael DeAugustino and Chris Cannon anchor 125 and 133, while Yahya Thomas returns at 149. Heavyweight Lucas Davison is a brick wall and is one of the most intriguing 285-pounders in the country. Northwestern might be on the outside looking in for a trophy as a team, but the Wildcats should have plenty of representation in Tulsa.

10. Wisconsin

Tournament ranking: No. 11

Eric Barnett (125), Taylor LaMont (133) and Austin Gomez (149) highlight the lightweights for the Badgers. Gomez is a national-finalist threat at that weight, and judging by his first year with the Badgers in 2021-22 after transferring in, he’s a star. Dean Hamiti (165) is a rising star after his breakout freshman year in 2021-22, and heavyweight Trent Hillger is as solid as they come in terms of veterans of college wrestling. Wisconsin will be one tough cookie this coming season.

11. Minnesota

Tournament ranking: No. 8

12. NC State

Tournament ranking: No. 17

13. Iowa State

Tournament ranking: No. 14

14. Northern Iowa

Tournament ranking: No. 18

The Gophers’ biggest question at this point is whether Gable Steveson will actually return. The two-time national champion and Olympic gold medalist hung up his wrestling shoes at the end of the 2022 tournament in March, but reports surfaced about a really scaled back schedule, to work with his WWE commitments, that could entice him to come back. NC State is a regular hammer in the ACC, while Iowa State and Northern Iowa unfortunately have to play second fiddle to the Hawkeyes in-state this season, but have studs in their lineups regardless. They’ll be fixtures at the national tournament.

15. Nebraska

Tournament ranking: No. 15

16. UPenn

Tournament ranking: No. 19

17. Virginia Tech

Tournament ranking: Tied for No. 15

18. Pittsburgh

Tournament ranking: Tied for No. 15

19. North Carolina

Tournament ranking: No. 20

Nebraska always brings out hammers somewhere. Right in the middle of the lineup are Ridge Lovett (149), Peyton Robb (157) and Mikey Labriola (174), giving the Huskers one of the best middle lineups in the country. UPenn could be sneaky good this season, and the fact that the Quakers are ahead of Ivy League force Princeton says something. Virginia Tech is highlighted by the return of 2019 national champion Mekhi Lewis (174), while Pittsburgh and North Carolina round out solid programs in the ACC this coming season.

The Sooners landed Purdue transfer Gerrit Nijenhuis (165) and also have Keegan Moore manning the fort at 184 pounds. Lehigh has Josh Humphreys at 157 to go along with transfer additions Tate Samuelson (184) and Michael Beard (197). Clay Carlson (141) leads the pack for the South Dakota State Jackrabbits. Don’t forget about Tanner Sloan (197) and AJ Nevills (285). Illinois is quiet in the lineup, but with some hammers such as Lucas Byrd, a hopefully healthy Mike Carr, Danny and Zach Braunagel and heavyweight Luke Luffman. The bigger news was the return of two-time national champion Isaiah Martinez, who’s now an assistant coach. Pat Glory (125) and Quincy Monday (157 last year, projected 165 this year) return for Princeton. Both were national finalists in 2021. Jared Franek (157) highlights North Dakota State’s lineup next season.

30. Stanford

InterMat ranks down to 30 in terms of its dual meet rankings. Ahead of the new season, some significant teams just missed the top 25 but could easily make moves into the top 25 or even higher this coming season. Heck, there are even two Big Ten teams outside of the top 25 that made InterMat’s preseason cut. It’s not the deepest conference in wrestling for nothing. Keep an eye on these teams as the season progresses in the winter.
