In My Father’s Violin (Netflix), a cute kid left all alone after the death of her street musician father finds a way to melt the heart of her arrogant uncle, a world-class violinist who thought he’d never have time for a child. My Father’s Violin star Engin Altan Duzyatan also features in all five seasons of Netflix’s sweeping Turkish period epic Resurrection: Ertugrul.

The Gist: Ali Riza (Selim Erdogan) is a busker, playing violin with his close band of musicians for tourists, passerby, restaurant diners, or anyone else with a coin in their pocket. Red-haired Ozlem (Gulizar Nisa Uray), just eight years old, is his daughter and tagalong, dancing when the band plays and basically acting as the mascot of her father’s little band. “Applaud the musicians!” she says. “PUt your tips in the hat!” And they do, until the cops chase the band away. Her father laughs off the pressure. “They are scared of realizing they’re part of the same music,” Ali Riza tells Ozlem. “Everyone is a melody. You just need to know how to listen.”

That lesson becomes even more important when Ali Riza confronts the fact that he’s a dead man. Coughing up blood, he seeks out his estranged brother Mehmet (Engin Altan Duzyatan), who has become a world-famous violinist. With his wife long gone and no one else to care for Ozlem, the dying Ali Riza knows Mehmet is his last chance, but the meeting goes sour immediately. “After 32 years, are you talking about your daughter like nothing happened? Don’t come up to me years later and talk about family.” And soon after, a tearful Ozlem plays a mournful violin in the dirt of her father’s fresh grave.

Mehmet is obstinate. He won’t take responsibility for Ozlem. And besides, he deflects to his wife Suna (Belcim Bilgin), he has a big concert coming up. She’s disgusted with his arrogance. “Some things in this world are more important than you and your music.” With a little push from Suna, Mehmet becomes Ozlem’s guardian, and moves into their home. Her arrogant uncle softens a little around the edges, and there’s always the glue of music and the violin to bind them, since Ozlem never goes anywhere without hers and the sounds that flow from Mehmet’s represent the good that lies somewhere deep in his soul.

What Movies Will It Remind You Of? My Father’s Violin director Andac Haznedaroglu brings his deft touch with the interplay between characters to two other films on Netflix, the romance Hot Sweet Sour and quirky historical dramedy Have You Ever Seen Fireflies?

Performance Worth Watching: As Ozlem, Gulizar Nisa Uray is every bit the precocious wise-ass her father raised on the streets of Istanbul. She’s bold enough to pester strangers for pocket change, and confident enough to basically force her way into her uncle’s heart. When Mehmet tells her she couldn’t possibly play a violin that’s as long as her arm, she simply tosses her hair and puffs up her chest. “Are you callin’ me a liar?”

Memorable Dialogue: Once he learns that Suna arranged his guardianship of Ozlem with Social Services, Mehmet is a little furious but mostly bitter. “You didn’t do it because you want her to be happy,” he tells his wife. “You wanted to be happy yourself. You are so empty inside, and you don’t know how to fill it.”

Sex and Skin: None.

Our Take: There’s real chemistry between Engin Altan Duzyatan as the world-class violinist whose arrogance gets knocked down a peg and Gulizar Nisa Uray as his niece who’s wise beyond her years, and that really sells the central conceit of My Father’s Violin, which boils down to the bonds of family and the particular beautiful music that lilts inside each of us. Family, of course, can mean more than blood, and as Mehmet’s heart softens and he begins taking to having Ozlem around as a sidekick – the same way she was for his brother and her father – Violin cuts to a great scene where uncle and niece rejoin the friendly bunch of guys who formed Ali Riza’s band. Of course, they’re short a violinist now. So Mehmet takes his brother’s place, the orchestra and concert violinist soling with the buskers, and even picks up and runs when the cops break the whole thing up. And he realizes, through all of these experiences with Ozlem, that his bitterness toward Ali Riza was his own problem all along. “Family is the most beautiful composition that is made up of different notes,” Mehmet tells Suna. And My Father’s Violin is at its best whenever it combines its notes of sentiment with the music spun from resin and bow.

Our Call: STREAM IT. With its heart in the right place and love and respect for the power of music, My Father’s Violin can teach a lesson or two about what matters in family and life.
