Who raised the Seahawks Flag today

As a famous Seattle resident who roots for the Seahawks, Dave Matthews was on the shortlist for local exhibitions of football-related civic pride.

As such, it was inevitable that the singer-songwriter would receive the green light to raise the 12th Man flag atop the Space Needle in downtown Seattle.

The Associated Press (h/t The News Tribune) reports that Matthews went about this honorary task Thursday, raising the 25-by-36 foot flag on high from atop the Needle.

A #12Flag flies high above Seattle one final time this season thanks to our @davematthewsbnd's Dave Matthews. #SB49 http://t.co/vOrP1FJfDV

The flag is brand new, according to the Associated Press, and will replace the old 12th Man flag that was damaged by strong winds. This newer, spiffier article will remain flying through the Super Bowl on Sunday.

As for Matthews, I don’t know if Seattle residents are going to be blasting “Ants Marching” at their pregame parties. I, for one, prefer that Beast Mode remix.

But hey—live your life, Seattle. If extended, fiddle-centric jam band is what blows your hair back, get on the stump and play it hot.

One of the most time-honored traditions in Seahawks history is the raising of the 12th Man Flag in the South Endzone before home games. It is usually by a former player, a local celebrity, or a Seattle sports legend. In Week 1 against the Broncos, former Seahawks linebacker K.J. Wright had the honors.
