Why am I not able to fast travel in Skyrim?

Fast travel is currently unavailable from this location

I had only ever encountered this bug when playing Fallout, but it looks as though it's also invaded Skyrim. After the battle for Whiterun, the enemy retreated or died, and I was told to meet with the Jarl. I did. Then, when I tried to fast travel to another location, I discovered I was unable, and the words "fast travel is currently unavailable from this location" appeared. I was not overencumbered, in combat, jumping, falling, in a building, dragging a corpse, or anything that, in normal gameplay, would prevent me from fast traveling. I loaded a previous save, and discovered that as soon as I won the battle for Whiterun, fast travel became unavailable. Any idea why this is happening and what I can do to start using fast travel again?

If you are in a city that still looks like it's in war then it becomes unavailable, I'm pretty sure. Try leaving the city. If not, then run to where you need to go and try to Fast travel next time, you need to go somewhere. Or just don't use fast travel, the roads of Skyrim are a fun experience in many cases.

I took Crusader's advice and rode Shadowmere a ways south. After Whiterun was out of sight, fast travel became available again. I had no further problems with using fast travel, and Whiterun was restored to its antebellum self, albeit with some Imperial-related dialogue.  All hail the Emperor, who I killed.

If you're inside a building, then you can't fast travel. After certain battle quests, the function will not be available. Looks like you found a good solution though.

For anyone who is still wondering, when I had this bug, I typed player.moveto 000198ba into the console and it teleported me to tullius. After that I was able to fast travel just fine

I’m having this same problem rn and I have no idea what quest is causing it. I’m kinda just forced to use the caravan, teleportation commands, or god forbid my horse. Wherever I go it won’t allow me to fast travel saying the same “unavailable from this location” thing. Someone said it’s from a quest and you can’t while a city is in war or whatever but I’ve gots no clue as to which one.

- There isn’t any nearby enemies . Not over encumbered. Not jumping. Not anything. Just frickin stuck

help :(

If you are near the Battle for Whiterun, try speaking to Ulfric/Tullius/Bulgruuf and make sure the quest is fully progressed. Additionally I suppose you can try going to Whiterun and get arrested which will hopefully reset a few things.

I just started up a lightly modded game and I'm having the same problem. Can't fast travel anywhere no matter where I am. I've tried rebooting the game and stuff, no luck. I'm playing Skyrim Special Edition.

The bug seems to be coming from survival mode. I toggled it off and it fixed it for me. Went back into survival mode, bug came back, toggled off again and it fixed again.

How come I cant fast travel in Skyrim?

First, you'll need to make sure you're outside. You won't be able to fast travel inside a cave, building, or other structure. Next, make sure you aren't in combat and that there aren't any enemies nearby. You won't be able to fast travel unless you're safe.

When can I fast travel Skyrim?

Once you've discovered a location and have confirmed its location on the map (you must physically go there), you can start using the Fast Travel feature to quickly be transported there. Time will still elapse as if you'd spent the time traveling there, but arrival is as instantaneous as it gets in real time.

Can you fast travel while over encumbered in Skyrim?

It is still possible to fast travel when over-encumbered in Skyrim. Doing so requires potions, mounts, or creative use of necromantic thralls. Looting items only to become over-encumbered is a nuisance for any The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim player who wants to sell or store their stuff.
