Why did Asher and Olivia break up

All American season 3 adds another summer mystery in episode two, but did Asher Adams cheat on Olivia Baker? The romance between Asher and Olivia developed throughout the first two seasons of All American, but it wasn't until season 2 that the pair officially got together. As close as they became, they received some separation over the summer, since Asher decided to spent a few months with his mom. This left Olivia alone in Beverly Hills, and season 3 has already teased that something might have happened between her and Spencer as a result.

However, All American season 3 brought a new wrinkle to Olivia's summer and the status of her relationship with Asher in episode 2. The new episode focused on the start of senior year for South Crenshaw and Beverly High, but one of the subplots came with the introduction of Vanessa Montes, the daughter of Beverly's new football coach. She's first shown being introduced to Olivia, but she isn't nearly as welcoming as expected. It is later revealed Asher already met Vanessa during the summer, and it turns out Olivia knows. Olivia tells Layla that she went to Mexico to surprise Asher over the summer instead of going on the Las Vegas trip, but she was the one who got surprised when she saw Asher and Vanessa together at the beach.

This revelation reframes portions of All American season 3, episode 2. The show uses a series of flashbacks to show Asher and Vanessa having fun by the ocean, but exactly what happens between them isn't clear. Olivia clearly suspects that Asher cheated on her with Vanessa. She asks him if he got the chance to meet the new coach's daughter, but Asher shrugs it off. His non-answer only makes Olivia more suspicious as it makes it clear he doesn't want his girlfriend to know he met Vanessa during the summer. When Asher and Vanessa have some moments alone in the episode, there is some flirting, but All American stops well short of confirming if anything romantic actually happened between them.

While Olivia might think that Asher cheated on her, All American is so far playing this as an ongoing storyline. A true answer will come at a later point it appears, and there is conflicting evidence on whether Asher did or would cheat on Olivia. Vanessa says that she won't tell Olivia what happened between her and Asher during the summer, which heavily implies something did happen. Asher telling her that he's happy to see her again only further suggests a possible romance between them.

That said, Asher was quite willing and ready to talk to Olivia about what happened over the summer when he got back. She cooled his interest in that topic and later seemed frustrated by not getting a chance to talk about their lives for the last few months. Asher may be desperate to confess he did cheat on Olivia with Vanessa, but that would be somewhat surprising. However, Asher could be trying to be more honest and forthcoming after his steroid scandal last season. All American season 3 still has more to tell with this story, and it won't be too shocking if Olivia seeing Asher and Vanessa together could be tied to the truth behind what happened between her and Spencer.
