Why did Bear in the Big Blue House end?

We all know that the internet can be a pretty horrible place, but every now and again something comes along and reminds you that, yeah, people do have emotions.

Sometimes it's an act of goodwill or the heartfelt words of a celebrity to a fan but a touch of nostalgia can also do the trick.

Recently the Twitter user The Milan Tooner shared the final scene of the popular Disney children's TV show Bear in the Big Blue House online.

The show which ran for five seasons from 1997 to 2006 was produced by the Jim Henson Television, and broadcast on the Playhouse Disney preschool channel.

During it's time on air it was an incredibly popular show with children and adults alike and went on to win three Daytime Emmy awards and a Director's Guild award.

The scene, which actually comes from the final episode of the fourth season (the show made a brief comeback in 2006 but only for eight episodes) sees Bear talking to the moon, aptly named Luna.

He tells her about his day and how nice everyone has been to him, but just before she has to leave he asks her if she'd like to sing 'The Goodbye Song' one last time, which was sung at the end of every episode and she duly obliges.

so the finale of Bear in the Big Blue House was recently rediscovered and here's (most of) the very last scene of… https://t.co/vjBCOAM03F

After they finish the song Bear says:

By the way, I hope I've been one of the nicest parts of your life because you've been one of the nicest parts of mine.

This is all a bit too much.

At the time of writing, this tweet has been shared more than 93,000 times, liked more than 270,000 and viewed more than 3.5 million times.

For some people, just this scene alone has stirred something inside of them and they are struggling to hold back the tears.

I'M EMOTIONAL, YOU WERE ONE OF THE NICEST PARTS OF MY LIFE BEAR https://t.co/bur3pDvhok

The Milan Tooner then added another tweet about the scene from an article where the Bear's voice actor Noel MacNeal explains that the scene was used at the memorial service for Lynne Thigpen, who voiced Luna.

Now, we could provide a critical analysis of why people are sharing this scene as it relates to some deep-seated longing to return to our childhoods, but - let's be honest - some things are just nice and that's OK.

This is based on opinion. Please don't list it on a work's trope example list.

  • The Goodbye Song is this combined with Awesome Music.
    • Bear's ending speech. When he ends with a "see you soon", remember that the show has actually been off the air for years.
    • After Lynne Thigpen passed away in 2003, Noel MacNeal gave a speech at the celebration of her life. Here's an excerpt:

When Lynne read the part of Luna with me, that was it. She was perfect, all the warmth and comfort and nurturing you'd expect from the moon. [...] She never saw this as just another job. She loved playing Luna and knew how so many children and adults loved Luna. Once on the set of The District, a crew guy found out Lynne was Luna and asked if she'd mind talking to his kid. And of course she didn't. He handed her the phone and I can only imagine the kid's expression knowing that Daddy was on location with the moon.

  • "A Beary Bear Christmas" has the song where Tutter sings about what it would be like if he was homeless like the dog he had just seen on the street. Also, according to Word of God, the writer of the song originally intended for the song to be mainly performed by Bear and not Tutter (of course, the main reason why this wasn't the case was because Bear was supposed to be the reassuring adult figure on the show). In the song, the closest Bear comes to personal sadness is the line, "I wish we could bring their [homeless people] troubles to an end."
    • Partway through the song, Bear assures Tutter “The Big Blue House isn’t going anywhere”. If you’re watching this in 2020 (and beyond), the waterworks start at this point.
    • Jack the Dog’s introduction being homeless until he moves in with Dr Hogg. This two-part episode is especially poignant given that the character is performed by Dave Goelz. Yes, the Dave freaking Goelz!
  • "First Day of Mouse School" has Bear reminiscing during the episode about how much Tutter is growing up. It's the first and only episode we've ever seen Bear cry (although that particular moment is slightly played for laughs).
  • Tutter's letter song to Grandma Flutter in "What's in the Mail Today?" counts as both this and heartwarming.
  • Ojo feeling sad in "Lost Thing" when she has trouble finding her Snow Bear.
  • Treelo feeling sad in "Friends for Life" when it seems that Ojo is too busy to play with him.
  • Ojo surveying the the damage of the library (having been hit by a tree due to a big storm) in the first part of the Season 4 premiere "Welcome to Woodland Valley".
    • The fact that this and the second part were made partially as a response to the September 11th attacks, and can easily be seen as a tribute to all of the lives that were lost that day.
  • From the Series Finale "This Is Your Life, Bear!"
Why did Bear in the Big Blue House end?
    :

Will you sing the Goodbye Song with us... one more time?

    • If you listen closely, you can hear Noel MacNeal choke up a little reading the line.
    • "By the way... I hope I've been one of the nicest parts of your life, because you are one of the nicest parts of mine. I'll see you back at the Big Blue House. Bye!"
    • Also, this quote by Luna, perhaps a great representation of Jim Henson and his life philosophy:

One life touches many others, Bear. We should make sure that each life we touch, we touch in as positive a way as we can.

    • This was also the last of the classic Playhouse Disney shows to end before the rebrand with Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. So it wasn’t just the end of a show, it was also the End of an Era.
