Why did Vincent shoot Jack on Virgin River?

Season 4 is here and secrets are spilling out all over this Northern California town.

Developed by Sue Tenney and based on Robyn Carr’s Virgin River novels, the Netflix series began premiering in 2019 and we’ve all become well acquainted with its wealth of characters over the years.

However, with plenty of space and time passed between seasons, it can sometimes be a little difficult to remember everybody.

Now that season 4 is finally ready to stream on the platform, it helps to recap the importance of a certain character. So, let’s get straight into it and address the situation with Vince in Virgin River.

Who is Vince in Virgin River?

Played by Steve Baci, Vince is Wes’ twin brother and fans have long suspected that he was the man responsible for shooting Jack at the end of season 2.

Officials brought Dan Brady – who served alongside Jack in the Marines – into custody in the season 3 finale after the gun they were searching for was found in his car.

However, a season 4 episode brings the truth to light in a scene with Preacher unearthing CCTV footage of Vince going into a hotel. This brings back a flood of memories and allows Jack to remember that Vince was the one who pulled the trigger, not Dan Brady.

By the end of season 3, Vince was a prime suspect for the abduction of Christopher, Wes’ son. With the truth about Jack’s attacker revealed, why exactly did he do it?

Why did Vince shoot Jack?

The finale finally lets audiences in on the secret of what happened that mysterious night.

A flashback to the night in question shows Vince arriving at a bar to talk to Preacher about his brother. Yet, he finds Jack instead.

Jack is immediately cautious and decides it is wise to have a knife in hand. Alas, Vince withdraws a gun and a fight ensues. Vince’s leg is cut in the scuffle and he decides to end it, shooting Jack and fleeing the bar to protect his neck.

It turns out that Brady was only at the very same bar because he’d planned to let Jack know he was parting ways with Calvin. The weapon was simply planted in his car as a sneaky attempt on Vince’s part to clear his name.

Indeed, that’s not the end of the road for Vince. Preacher later attacks him after it’s out in the open that he kidnapped Christopher. Preacher and Paige manage to save him but Vince’s fate is left unknown. We’ll just have to wait until season 5. Speaking of which…

Warning: This article contains spoilers about Virgin River season 4.

For more than a season, "who shot Jack?" has become the new "who shot J.R.?"

Even Martin Henderson, who plays Jack, says it was what he was most eager to find out before starting season 4. And at last, we have an answer.

Despite the fact that Brady (Benjamin Hollingsworth) was arrested at the end of season 3 for the shooting, he was not the culprit. In fact, it wasn't even anyone connected to Calvin (David Cubitt) and the drug operation. It was Vince (Steve Bacic), twin brother of the late Wes (also Bacic), Paige's (Lexa Doig) abusive husband and father of Christopher (Chase Petriw).

When Vince came to Jack's bar looking for Preacher, Jack immediately recognized something was wrong, grabbing a butcher knife from behind the counter. An altercation ensued, resulting in his shooting.

But with that question finally answered, what does it mean for Virgin River? In Brady's case, Hollingsworth hopes it means he is finally able to integrate more into the community.

"I really hope that Brady moves on now that he's exonerated from shooting Jack," he says, before joking, "We all know Brady's a good shot, so if he was really trying to shoot Jack he wouldn't have shot him in the leg. Anyway, I'm really excited have Brady be out of that cloud and hopefully rejoin the community of Virgin River. This might be an opportunity for him to move away from that fringe and that antagonist cloud that he lives under and repair relationships. He is dating Jack's sister and inevitably that's going to come to a head at some point. I would love to see that relationship have more meaning and explore maybe an apology or some resolution to the conflict and then go beyond that. I hope Brady starts to become a little bit more of a town friendly local and less of an on the fringe bad guy."

And now that Jack is healed from his shooting and on the way to becoming a father, we hope he's out of harm's way and ready to have that conversation with Brady.
