Re the audio format, the narrator has changed. The previous narrator, Lisette Lecat, was superb and had the ideal voice for The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series. I’ve only heard a sample on Audible but the new narrator’s voice is much more strident. I hope this change is temporary because I will truly miss Lecat’s gentle, musical voice. I am uncertain whether I want to continue with the series. Comments?
Nikki I am sure that Adjoa Andoh is a wonderful narrator for the other works she's narrated. The voice she's used for some of the characters are lovely. But, for me I found that the voices she uses for several of the major characters is too grating. And, this outweighed the good voices.
Michele I totally agree. I think this is the first book in the series I have listened to the audio-book format or at least the first one in a long time. I am a big audio-book fan and love them but I must agree with the comments about this one and I will not listen to anymore with this narrator. The voices that are given to many of the characters are just so grating and irritating. I made it through but will now go back to hard copies.
William McTavish There have been two versions of the audiobooks for this series for the last few books.
Lisette LeCat is great. The other narrator overacts painfully. Why on EARTH would they drop the original narrator after 20 books! I cannot listen to this version. Awful.
Carol I just started this book on audio as well and am struggling with the new narrator. So much of the charm came through the voice of Lisette Lecat which you perfectly described as gentle and musical. I am only on the 2nd disk. I'll likely continue since this is my commuting treat. Did you finish listening or just switch to print? I hope the publishers bring back Lisette Lecat for future stories. After 20 books, the characters (portrayed by Lisette) felt like old friends, and I miss them!
Marcia Part of my enjoyment of this series has been the narrator, Lisette Lecat. I agree that this new narrator, while very good in some respects, was far too strident in characterizing Charlie and others.
Steph i heartedly agree! i was soooo disappointed not to hear the excellent lisette lecat as i've never "read" any of these books but have listened to all of them & she is all these characters to me. i almost didn't finish this one because of this but eventually did. the new narrator is not as good, several characters sounded the same (grating & strident) & it sounded like she was doing a bad christopher walken impression, that's who i kept picturing! i hope lisette returns, i'll send my thoughts to recorded books, maybe if enough of us do, they will return her to where she belongs.
Playsinthedirt I was VERY disappointed with this! I thought the plot flimsy. The new narrator totally spoiled it for me. This late in the
series is a bad time to change voices and this narrator gave the characters voices that did not match their personalities and was grating. I will not be listening to another by her and question whether the author actually wrote this or just the idea and let someone else fill it in. I have been an avid follower/reader for all of his different series but especially #1 Ladies Detective Agency books.
Colleen I agree with all the comments here. I totally get the idea of using a Black voice, but don't switch narrators after 20 books! Really diminishing the whole experience and I am only on Disk 2.
Paulette Johnson I received Land of Long Lost Friends narrated by Adjoa Andoh although I now see cds narrated by Lisette Lecat are available. I will purchase those. I forced myself to listen to the whole book. It was awful. She speaks very quickly, strident was a great word! Both Mme Makutsi and Charlie sound similar, like witches! JLB Matekoni sounds like an idiot. I'm sorry but I will no longer purchase audiobooks in this series.
Jamie I couldn't agree more. I love Lisette Lecat and have come to rely on her "voice" for the characters. I had to stop listening to this version as I don't care for the narrators voice.
Khosch I initially purchased this audiobook, as I have all the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series. I didn't realize the
narrator had changed until the book started. The voices used for Mma Ramotswe and Mma Makutsi are dreadful. Especially Mma Makutsi - she sounds like a demented witch. The accents are very strong and exaggerated, and the voices are harsh.
Mo I do prefer Lisette Lecat and was disappointed when I heard a new voice, but by the end of the first disk, I had pretty well adjusted and enjoyed the story. These books are so full of gentle humor, they make me laugh out loud. I would say overall, Lisette Lecat is better.

used to Andoh by the end of the book, but it was not nearly as enjoyable as Lecat. Not sure I will finish the series, alas. And I thought Grace's baby was Etumelong CLOVIS Radiputi, but in this book it's Etumelang ANDERSON Radiputi. Am I imagining things?
Dena Is it possible that Someone in Charge decided that Black African characters should be portrayed by a Black narrator rather than a White, even if born in South Africa, narrator? I looked at several of the reviews on Audible and every one of them complained about the new narrator, even if they liked her narration of other books. I'm waiting for this (audio) version and now I fear I will also be sad not to hear the familiar voice reading to me.
Tobey I LOVE Lisette Lecat!! At first, I was sad that she is not narrating this book. Because I have listened to the entire No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series and expectation of how each character sounds. However I listened to the sample and was impressed. Yes, the narration is deeper and less comic but Adjoa Andoh narrated Amercanah and it was excellent.
Specs Bunny Well, my answer won't be popular here, but for this series I really prefer Adjoa Andoh. Her narration is a real bonus to an already lovely series.
Antonia Espinola Lisette Lecat is not reading the next book in the series, "THe Joy and Light Bus Company", the narrator is Bianca Amato.
Jane Glen This is the first one I've listened to, and I have to say I found the voices very strident, and especially did not like the portrayal of Charlie. But now that I am aware of another narrator, I will look for one of those.
