Why does my leg hair grow so thick?

Is it normal? My arms and the upper part of my legs have fine hair. The lower part though, has coarse and thick hair. I found that waxing keeps the hair there pretty much non existent for much longer, while shaving/depilatory cream only lets me have 2-3 days leg-hair free before they grow back.

Anyone else?

I’m going to go ahead and say yes, it’s normal. Pubic hair is different for everyone. Some people have lots of it, some have little, and its patterns can be all over the place. Shaving is always an option, as is waxing, but really, whatever you’re most comfortable with is the way to go. Some people just let it grow and some like to remove it. Find out what works for you and go for it!

MOM ANSWER

Pubic hair doesn't really follow any rule books. Some girls don't have much, others have a lot and — I assure you — many of us deal with the unruly pubic hair that likes to spread to the legs. The growth isn't related to your shaving. More likely, it's just that you're getting older. Even though it seems like hair comes in thicker when we shave, the actual number of hairs and thickness stays the same. Whether or not you shave the hair on your legs is up to you. Just don't worry about it spreading further down or getting thicker!

EXPERT ANSWER

It is totally normal to have pubic hair extend to the upper part of your thighs. Even after your period begins, your body keeps developing: your breasts get fuller and your pubic hair continues to spread for a couple of years. You might have a trail at the groin area of your upper thigh. Toward the back between your legs is another common place for your pubic hair to extend. If you are concerned when wearing gym shorts or bathing suits, there are a couple of easy and inexpensive ways to get rid of the unwanted hair.

Shaving is probably the most common, and since you already shave, that might be a good option. I do recommend sitting down to do this – even try it in some warm, shallow bath water. Remember to shave in the direction that your hair grows to prevent razor burn and ingrown hairs. Hair removal lotions are also available over the counter. These remove hair and last a little longer than shaving. If you like the idea of something a little more permanent, many spas and salons offer waxing as an option. Do what feels comfortable to you. Talk to your mom or another trusted adult and get her opinion. Make sure to follow all label directions if you are trying an at-home hair removal process.

For many ladies, the old adage, “5 o’clock shadow” is actually quite relatable when it comes to shaving the legs. Does it seem like as soon as you step out of the bath, your leg hair just instantly grows back? Or as soon as your legs feel the slightest hint of a cool breeze, all your shaving work undoes itself? If so, you are not alone. Thousands, if not millions, of girls of al ages suffer from this same mundane and obnoxious dilemma.

Hair Growth Cycles Average Every 6 to 8 Weeks

All body hair grows and rests in cycles. This means that all the hair you see on your body right now is not the only hair you have. Basically, once a hair has finished its growth cycle, the follicle releases the hair and enters into a dormant state, or rest cycle, for 6 to 8 weeks on average. During its rest, the follicle will rejuvenate while other hairs are in their growing cycle. Now, with this hair growth rate in mind, that doesn’t mean that you won’t feel a stubble for nearly 2 months. After 6 or 8 weeks, the hair will reach a maximum length, and then rests or releases for a new hair.

Factors That Add to the Rate of Your Leg Hair Growth

As mentioned, for many it seems like even the closest shave won’t completely get rid of leg stubble. Or, as soon as you step out of the shower, you get hair-stimulating goosebumps all over, undoing all the shaving you did a minute prior. But there are things that might be contributing to these effects; things you can abate or stop in order to maintain your smooth skin.

The top factors that might influence how sensitive your legs are to hair regrowth include your diet, the temperature settings in your bathroom, the quality of your skin, your brand of razor, the freshness or newness of your blade, and more. Factors impacting your hair growth that you cannot control or would be difficult to control include genetics, medications, medical conditions, and your hair type.

How to Prolong Freshly Shaved Legs

Before you even begin, it helps to shave with warm water and lathery soap or cream, and be sure you legs are fully wet. Some tips to prolong your smoothly shaved legs include applying a thick layer of lotion directly after drying your skin from shaving, eating a healthy diet, taking vitamin supplements, wearing thick, cozy socks, wearing tights, or opting for permanent hair removal like electrolysis! Electrolysis is the most effective and established method of permanent hair removal for all hair types and skin tones. Why does my leg hair grow so fast and thick?

It's all about genetics. This is why your leg hair grows so fast (or appears to be growing fast). If your genetic makeup indicates that your leg hair will grow in dark, that's what will happen. And if that's the case for you, your dark leg hair may appear to be growing faster than someone with lighter leg hair.

Why is my leg hair suddenly thicker?

Your hormones are out of balance. A sudden increase in hair growth or loss in women is often caused by an imbalance of male hormones, which are naturally present in both men and women in differing amounts. If you get an increase in testosterone, for example, excess hair can be the result.

Does leg hair get thicker with age?

Since our estrogen levels drop as we reach middle to later age, body hair growth corresponds by becoming sparser and thinner, too. In fact, most people will see a significant slow down in the production of leg and arm hair.

Why do some hairs grow really thick?

Hair follicles come in different shapes and sizes, affecting hair texture and width. Some people have wider follicles-and therefore, thicker hair strands-than other people. Genetics influence hair thickness, but other factors like hormones and age are important factors, too.
