Why is once upon a deadpool rated pg-13

Here’s one way to tell if a movie billed as “family-friendly” actually isn’t: We can’t describe many of its jokes in our publication.

“Once Upon a Deadpool” (in theaters nationwide Wednesday) is the PG-13 re-edit of the critically acclaimed, R-rated “Deadpool 2.” This updated film – which incorporates previously deleted scenes, a new “Princess Bride” storytelling framework and additional post-credit scenes (more on that later) – is really for fanboys over the age of 13, not children. At one point, Deadpool even says right to the camera: "Trust me, we all saw the first movie."

It's also for the Fred Savage faithful.

In "Once Upon a Deadpool," Ryan Reynolds’ title character ties down Savage (playing himself), now a 42-year-old actor and sitcom director. Savage is forced to revisit his famous 1987 "Princess Bride" role as a sweet bedridden boy listening to a story. This conceit works well as a plot device because it allows filmmakers to cut problematic sequences – or, as Deadpool says, to tell the story "through childlike innocence."

What to know

critics consensus

Once Upon a Deadpool retains enough of the franchise's anarchic spirit to entertain, but doesn't add enough to Deadpool 2 to justify its own existence. Read critic reviews

Audience Reviews for Once Upon a Deadpool

    • Jul 17, 2019

I have now officially seen three different versions of Deadpool 2. The theatrical, the "Super Duper" cut, and now this one. As far as I'm concerned, each re-release has been worse than the last. I get the use of the framing device, and it was even pretty funny doing the whole Fred Savage/Princess Bride thing, but Deadpool 2 being cut together this way just felt erratic.

It's still Deadpool, it's still funny, it's still good enough, but it's not different enough to be worth it. As a novelty, it's notable enough, and the additional footage with Fred Savage is funny. I do like how Savage even comments on some of the criticisms of the movie, like the fridging of Vanessa or Cable's lack of complexity compared to the comics. However I'm not really sure who this movie's supposed to be for. It comments on the original take on Deadpool 2 in some funny ways, but it doesn't have the bite of Deadpool 2 which makes it a charming novelty but ultimately pointless. It could be for families I guess, but then they're going to miss the references to the original version, and then it takes away some of the elements of the original that it doesn't need to. There are some great scenes that get shortened or cut out entirely that didn't need to. Sometimes there's a dramatic moment that's undercut by an insert from Fred Savage, which is funny if you've seen the original, but kind of ruins the moment. This is really a weird idea overall. I mean, it's still Deadpool, there's stuff in it that still works because the original worked, but ultimately this take on it is kind of a failed experiment.

Why is Once Upon a Deadpool rated PG

Once Upon a Deadpool is rated PG-13 by the MPAA for intense sequences of violence and action, crude sexual content, language, thematic elements and brief drug material. Violence: Gun and bladed weapon violence throughout.

Can a 12 year old watch once upon a time?

This isn't your kids' fairy tale collection, however, nor is it a suitable bedtime story for the little ones. It's dark, intense, occasionally sexy, and at times too violent for younger kids. The constant plot twists and the characters' unpredictable motivations, can be worrisome, too.

Is Once Upon a Deadpool censored?

Despite all the humor, it remains a massively censored version. With Deadpool 2, the team around Ryan Reynolds had enjoyed the freedom of the R-rating and used it for its own purposes.

What is the age restriction for Once Upon a Deadpool?

      Clearly rated as PG-13...
